MemberOvomorphJun-18-2012 1:58 PMI guess because over the years I have become so used to suspense & violence being used to make things "SCARY" in film, when really all they do most of the time is just act as a cheap substitute for it, I got to thinking a lot recently about what really were "SCARY" films or films that really "SCARED me recently...and it was very very hard to come with any...there were however some SCARY scenes...Like this one...which only lasted as long as about the time it takes to do a short PAN of the camera from left to right across a 6 by 10 foot wall...From the Film..."INSIDEOUS"

When I look back...that film...in the past DECADE... and ONLY a very few others stand out to me for me being able to credit them each, and ONLY these few films, with giving me an Actual Scare or Scary Vibe, even for a few seconds if you will. I am not that easy to scare in a MOVIE theater.
needless to say If I am honest Prometheus was NOT one of them, I knew too much gong in...
Here are those other few films form the past say 12 years aside from "INSIDEOUS" that gave me a true scare. There were Only two.

There is a scene in which the Husband Kisses the wife, it is now widly known as the "Kiss Of Death Scene" that to me was the scariest thing I ever saw filmed next to the true life "faces of death" series of movies.

and then there was this other one...a remake by ROB ZOMBIE...

BONUS I just remembered,
There was in fact one other film as I think back that just makes it...it was a Japanese {I think} film called "Audition" that scared my pants off...for real.

I have not seen one other film in the past 12-15 years that scared me at all.

MemberOvomorphJun-18-2012 3:24 PMAs for Myself,
the scariest part of a film is ..what one does not see.
Implied fear , or suspense and what not ...
lets the viewer , descend into their own fears ..
nothing is more scary or real , than what a person
" perceives " it to be ..and your own personal mental space

MemberOvomorphJun-18-2012 3:58 PMI agree completely, very VERY well said, the movies "Inception", "Marathon Man" {With Dustin Hoffman}, and "The Usual Suspects" {With Chaz Palmintari & Kevin Spacey} come to mind immediately!

MemberOvomorphJun-19-2012 12:29 AMThe end of "Looking For Mr. Goodbar"....that for me, was profoundly chilling, very upsetting. Shouldn't say was.....is.

MemberOvomorphJun-19-2012 5:02 AMI remember that scene, where the Murder happens, I loved Keaton in that but thought the film was over rated when it I first saw it many many years ago, time for me to give it another viewing. For me that film kind of justified living on your own and trying to struggle through life with the bear minimum.

MemberOvomorphJun-21-2012 5:36 PMInsideous was a great tribute to the Exorcist and Poltergeist.
But still interesting enough to watch on its own. Not great but definitely good.

"Insideous" have a lot of it thanks to The Exorcist [the version you've never seen; aka Directors Cut] and Exorcist: Legion
All those scenes where an entity shows up where least expected and out of the camera centre is basically The Exorcist reenacted [Pazuzu would be proud].
I liked Insideous's first half hour. After that it went downhill for the only reason of neglecting those same unexpected sights in order to bring up the story [as if the two coulnd't go together].
In other words, a lot of potential that wasn't explore to it's fullest.
INCUBUS [the 80's one, not the one with Shatner]:
A movie that haunted my childhood for it's dark imagery and menacing aproach [more of an "insidious" way of building horror than actual slash/kill/destroy sort of flick]
No heroes there. And after watching it again a couple of months ago I realized how good it really was story-wise [with a lot that could have been done as well].

indeed. Too bad it had a kind of a hickup at the mid point. The momentum of it's visuals and story-telling got frozen somewhat

MemberOvomorphJun-27-2012 11:41 AMscary film is not an easy thing for me to find...I mean truly scary like that scene was in Insideous, that 5 seconds had to be the freshest ting I have seen in film in along long long long time.
I have copies I am going to watch today of 2 films I have not seen yet...
Machine Gun Preacher
&
Get The Gringo
Not sure if either will in fact scare but I can tell you I stared watching Get The Gringo and saved it because the opening was so amazing looking I want to savour it...
But we need to find a Truly Scary Film or someone should be trying to make a new one that does it cause quite frankly I think Hollywood is dropping the ball on "Scary" & there hasn't been any one EVER...except for maybe Brian De Plama who by design has made a career of imitating and copying Hitchcocks work but there has never been another Alfred and this business of movies...scary movies in particular is what it needs most if you ask me...and he was so good at making the every day normal thingy or the seemingly unimportant and insignificant little tiny thing seem scary too...we need someone to breath new life into the SCARY film...haven't seen one good whole one in years and years!!!
HitchCock was in a class by himself and way way way way way ahead of his time!!!
Ever see North By Northwest or Vertigo...?...I am not saying these are particularly scary films the way Psycho or The Birds were but they are great examples of how unique a director, one of a kind actually, that he was!
and MAN, did he love to mess with Carey Grant, really enjoyed making that actors life difficult, in fact he did this to all his actors to make them better!!!
