I've noticed that, in several sci-fi space movies/space operas, big explosions occur in the end.
Some examples:
Alien: Nostromo

A visually beautiful one in my opinion. It fits with the movie's visual, metaforical, biologic and creative style.
Aliens: Hadley's Hope
Couldn't find a picture.
This one is more common, usual.
Prometheus: Prometheus/Engineer ship crash

Very well executed and it's one of my favorite shots of the movie.
Star Wars: Death Star

Again, a common explosion, but it's very well executed, doesn't seem fake even today, and it's also beautiful.
Star Wars-Return of the Jedi: 2nd Death Star

Despite being a normal one, It is surely iconic since it marks 'the end' of the empire and the star wars saga.
Dark Star: Bomb 20
Couldn't find picture.
Due to the year (1974), the explosion is very simple, just a strong light, but bomb 20 is a interesting "character". I found it similar to Hal 9000.

The Thing: Outpost 31
Couldn't find picture.
This movie is not a space opera, but since it's one of the best sci-fi movies ever, I think it must be featured here.
This explosion guarantees the death of the last creature (The Blair monster), but the excellent ending is still suspenseful, since we don't know if one of the last survivors, McReady and Childs, is an assimilation...
Have you heard of phoenix asteroids?
They glow in every color of the rainbow...they travel endlessly through space...
