Similar to how a queen does. Now when the trilobite tries to impregnate the engineer (success) it grabbed shaw's leg but let go. Now before you say it was trying to get the engy, it obviously had a good grasp on him with or without that tentacle. So why let go. MAMA maybe. Im guessing the deacon is an advanced alien. It came out of a advanced alien or human giant white dudes. Also the human based aliens are already awesome imagine them coming out of an 20x stronger and intelligent being. But the reason for its look might be because of the trilobite. Maybe a facehugger and trilobite give different types of aliens. Who knows.

Well - i have even more headache about the fact, that
- holloway was infected by a little drop of goo and turned out to a zombie
- shaw was infected by holloways sperm and got pregnant with squid
=> aeh, i dont know how this will be in 2094, but shouldnt shaw now also be infected as she was connected to her baby and shared via umbilical cord blood circulation with that eyeless squid?
=> Ms. Vickers killed Holloway and did not let him in- but as they knew (david, dr. ford, some others, maybe all of them?) that "something" with her is wrong, they did not do any attempt to izolate her or through her out of the ship?
Oh pardon me, i did forget that there were no plotholes or not-believable scenes AT ALL.....
--------------
back to your topic - the trilobite had only one goal - to reproduce and then R.I.P.
And it did - thats all.

To be honest you could look at it this way.
Alien is all a product of circumstance to the events we will see in this series of prequels.
With every action is an equal and opposite reaction, Alien just picks up from the complete clusterfuck caused by this lot bumbling around with things they have no idea about

Umbilical cords connect to the placenta. A normally functioning placenta does not mix the mothers blood with the infants, but allows exchange of gases and nutrients.

I think that infection is a half way experiment trying to get their specimens stronger. A stronger human for a dificult times, and oc shawn must be infected the only thing in completely disagree is with the squid name... is a squid and period...mayeb wasnt a good trade name after all, who would eat one after watch the movie, but still is a squid ....morphologically cant be other thing.
The world will spin well past our last breath, but I will always care about you

Just remember boys that if I set a bunch of untrained people down in the Amazon forrest, they would figure things out as they go. Thats what you have here. There is no direct or common mission parameter...the one geleogist says he is in it for the money...SHAW wants answers to compliment her archeoglical work, the old man wants some extra years, vickerts want to take over the company and the captain just cares about flying, drinking and OH WELL....
No science experiments...no military recon..no data gatyhering...Just tell them I want some extra years and we can all go home...Some rich guys party

For me, the most interesting part of this speculations (and other) is some sort of a metaphor - as in all the "Alien" saga, always present in "canonical" tetralogy (yep, I really love 3&4): the "perfect" being, capable of changing the enviroment, adapting to every conditions? motivated only for the survival of its kind? not giving a "fork" to other species? human nature? I know, it sounds bold, but maybe (just IMHO) the "canonicals" are so profound, because of the fact that WE are the real Aliens... I know, some of you will find it exaggregated, but after all, we are like our beloved Xeno. in some "meta" point of view, of course. ;-)

There is no evidence that The Engineers we saw in the film are of superior intellect. People use tech all the time that they have no idea the science that is involved behind them.

@ Daniel_N
I Was also thinking that before but leaves me confused as to how they may have come back to earth 6 times after they "created" us.
This movie just has way too many plotholes that I don't get.
I mean we're talking about Ridley Scott here.
He directed Alien, Gladiator, American Gangster........
So something has GOT to be up with the weird scenes and overall Twilight Zone feel of this movie IMO.

i have a speculation for you... is the name holloway perhaps a reference to mark danielewski's popular early 00s postmodern novel "house of leaves"? a character named holloway is involved in the exploration of a house which has started growing vast dark passageways which seem to contain some kind of monster...

The movie does not stand up on it's own two feet. Thats the end of it and thats why there is so much speculation on this and other sites. Bad movie. Too many short cuts and incomprehensibles.
I agree with part of your analysis but the more you analysis it the more questions arise. If previous movies are to go by Shaw should turn into some sort of half breed Alien. I'm not sure even of the purpose of the Deacon Alien. The planet is now deserted. Will we have to wait until sequel 2 in maybe 2018 to find out it's purpose?

This may be a dumb question but is this movie at all related to E.T. .?
That thing that came outta mr. Clean kinda looks like a mean E.T.
It's the same director right?
