MemberOvomorphJune 20, 2012One of my favorite scenes in the film, is the struggle between the last engineer and the trilobite at the med pod entrance. What do you guys think of the trilobite's design, intention, execution by the artists etc?

I feel anything that looks like a giant squid is a bit of a cop-out in the creativity department. That being said I thought the special effects were very realistic and fun to watch.

Even having tentacles, I think it had a fresh design. That scene is also one of my favorites.
Have you heard of phoenix asteroids?
They glow in every color of the rainbow...they travel endlessly through space...

oh yes.
Bob fighting the Squid is pretty nasty.
My fave part of the movie is the beginning of it. And the one when BoB hitts Weyland with David 8's head. WIKED!!!!!

If you look at nature, it is always defining itself for optimum. The squid and all its equitpment seemed a perfect match for an Engineer...Anything less could have been overcome by the Engineer...From the arms race point of view...which is the prey and predator keep growing to stay out of each others reach, the squid is literally ON TOP OF HIS GAME...lol...By the same token, if you bring fire arms or weopans into it, the squid too big a target to miss...so in time, it would reduce itself to being faster and more lethal...ENTER ALIEN....

wow, thanks so much for all the replies so far guys. I personally thought the trilobite was quite interesting in its concept. It belongs in the alien universe in respect that it grows enormous very rapidly and resembles a facehugger. However, it was hard for me to understand why a parasite would have teeth if it impregnates its host via a proboscis tube and not through the mouth. Like a tick or a leech. Also, I don't know if you guys remember but did some of the tentacles after it grew larger turn into legs? Right before the engineer is overpowered you can clearly see that its supporting itself by very sturdy like tentacles that resemble legs to me. Thanks a lot for the replies and keep them coming ;)!!!!!

you are welcome, friend.
The Trilobite is a raw form of the Facehugger... with teeth.

It worked for me too. It was obviously even more powerful than the Engineer who'd just been throwing people around like dog toys. The tentacles were clearly capable of becoming semi-rigid like a limb, or constricting like a snake. The Engineer could only hold it off long enough for the second set of tentacles to pop out......if that hadn't worked, it still had a set of teeth to latch onto his head. Lots of redundacy in the design, just like the xeno.

Excellent ending and very well executed, if not not terribly original.
For Geology majors, kind of a dumb name

I thought the Trilobite looked great on screen. Would have liked to see it loose in the ship however!

I love the look of it, it was quite frightening the first time seeing it; but I have to go with jim100, I hate the name.
Since I'm a huge nerd, when I hear "trilobite" I do not think "eldritch abomination/space squid monster", I think a small, extinct (and cute, IMO :3) arthropod.
June 20, 2012
also the second set of tendrils that came out of the center to wrap around the engineer's head reminded me too much of "the thing"
June 20, 2012
Well, this is considered to be a primordial 'Facehugger', so the name makes a little sense. As Trilobites on Earth are ancient extinct creatures which had to evolve. This gigantic Facehugger needs to evolve to be more efficient. So, I'm sure we'll see some other forms of it before we get to the Facehugger from ALIEN.

Looked to much like a starfish and the squid design is to soft to really be scary.
H.R. Giger once stated, that he thought hands were scary, and the original facehugger almost looked like a strong bony hand with slender and elongated fingers - designed to fit and impregnate a human being. Repulsive and functional by design.
The size of the trilobite (they should definitely have chosen another name, that doesn´t belong to an extinct arthropod) makes it look a bit clumsy, as if it could easily fall over its own tentacles. In some of the concept art the trilobite looks more facehugger-like, I would have liked that in the movie as well.

One of the best scenes. The designers had to find creature designs that looked somewhat white underwater fauna-like..its a cool, new look and the facehugging feature is enormous compared to Alien. Kane would have been impressed.
I wonder what happend to him after he impregnated the engineer.

If I had that pulled out of my uterus, i'd be pretty shit scared!
The problem is... it was all given away in the trailers, so the moment had kind of passed from one of surprise to one of expectancy. A huge fail there for the film
