Little Incentive
MemberOvomorphJun-21-2012 9:49 AMOne thing that always puzzled me is the demise of these characters in 'Alien'.
Brett - he takes a direct-shot to the noggin but is then taken off and cocooned. If he's dead, why bother cocooning him? In that famous deleted-scene, it looks like he's half-turning into an alien-egg?
Also, I've seen some outtakes where the alien's hands are either side of his head and blood is pouring....is it crushing his head or what?
Dallas - does anyone want to speculate what happens to him in the air-shaft? I also thought at the very least he'd be able to get a shot-off using the flame-thrower.
It's right in front of him, not behind him.
Parker - why did the alien seem to take so long to kill him?
In the movie it looks like he's just covered in blood and alien-slime(?), screaming at the alien until he's skulled.
Im sure there's experts on here who can clear these up?

MemberOvomorphJun-21-2012 10:00 AMRemember--these scenes were shot pre ALiens--hence pre queen laying eggs..my understanding is that the orginal concept was that people were made into eggs....obviously that was changed through cutting these scens and the plot of aliens

MemberOvomorphJun-21-2012 10:10 AMThe extended deleted scene of Brett's demise does seem to imply the Alien crushing his skull...reminded me of the way Roy kills Eldon in Bladerunner !

MemberOvomorphJun-21-2012 10:15 AMWe can only offer opinion, not 'expert' ;)
Brett was screaming as it dragged him up the air duct. I always assumed he was still alive.
As Marcx points out, the original concept was that they were taken alive (or dead) and turned into more eggs after being cocooned.
I kinda liked that concept better than the idea of a queen because it makes a single alien more of a threat.
The scene was apparently cut due to pacing issues, its quite long and would have broken up the tension of the last part of the film where Ripley heads for the lifeboat.

Exactly, and this is why I stand by my contention that Aliens (and its Loader-fighting queen) totally BROKE the original Alien concept, the purity; the horror of 'hosting'.

MemberOvomorphJun-21-2012 10:31 AMI thought Parker's death was quick it was the Alien's eerie, macabre ''waltz'' that set the pacing before his death ?

Micro changes in air density
MemberOvomorphJun-21-2012 10:37 AMI dont agree. All the original scripts dating well before Alien have eggs as the main source. My take on the creature in Alien is that because it was alone it was adapting to it's situation and reproducing in a different way. There are insects and some amphibian what can change sex and adapt like this. If the creature is part of the hive it wouldn't do this.

People can survive with quite substantial portions of their brains missing...but mostly, 'they don't.
You do have to wonder, if the Alien cared about them living, then why such delight in all the continued tongue-ing head-shots?
Maybe they don't need to be alive to get egged-up? Don't know.
Dallas:
Probably fainted. Looked the type.
Parker:
The Alien was probably just enjoying making him suffer because of his poor attitude.

MemberOvomorphJun-21-2012 1:14 PMYou dont see any ALIENS actually munching on humans like we eat a turkey leg, just using them to lay eggs...That is a consisting theme..Another good theme is it kills you dead when it has too...Someone who had access to the inner circle of thoughts once shared that the ALIEN rods on its back used to be extended and was used much like a spineret on a spider abdomen...Not only did this show in Brett being landed on and then pulled upward, but in ALIEN when spinning cocoons too. Whether it will kill you or cocoon you...that decsion is made in the moment..Worth noting: Spiders keep their food very much alive until they are ready to eat it..

MemberOvomorphJun-21-2012 2:14 PMI'm not sure what the original writers had in mind, but based on the movie, I always figured they were being saved for snacks. But after watching that deleted scene, Brett sure does look like he was tucked away in an egg. As scary as that scene was, I'm glad it was taken out for continuity purposes. It's interesting watching the deleted scenes and alternate takes - they make for a much different movie than the final cut, but I don't think for the better.

MemberOvomorphJun-21-2012 4:42 PMWell looking at the deleted coccoon scene, I'd wager that Brett is simply the organic material that will be melted/dissolved/whatever into proteins for the baby facehugger to feed on while developing in the egg.
Dallas could either be the intended facehuggee or another protein sac in development. I think, but I am not sure, Dallas left the flamethrower in the vent above where he encounters the alien. He does drop something and takes off in fright. If it was the flamethrower, he'd be defenseless. Why did the xeno keep him alive? I think because it is more likely that Brett was facehugger food and Dallas was chestburster incubator. Hence, no need for a living Brett.
Parker and Lambert's deaths are interesting because, just in my opinion, it clearly establishes the xeno as a hostile/malevolent force. The xeno had made its egg and gotten a living host for the next generation. Parker and Lambert were not a threat, clearly they were not interested in any nest the xeno made and the xeno would have certainly sensed their fear, confirming them as lack of threat. Unless the xeno is much like a dog or bear or any number of animals that seem to be almost enticed to attack when smelling fear. But the xeno does seem to take pleasure, genuine pleasure in their deaths, so I vote for it being far more than a nasty dog.

AdminPraetorianJun-21-2012 4:52 PMThe alien shoots it's inner jaw into Bretts head. From what I understand the Alien can use any resource and convert it to whatever it needs, be it food, eggs or building material (hive structure).

MemberOvomorphJun-24-2012 3:17 AMThe shooting of the inner tounge is designed to wound-neutralise it's prey by attacking the cognative region of its brain head area. While the prey writhes and struggles it is partly subdued in the process. In the meantime the alien lifecycle is ever adaptive and can embrace a singular centered pursuit or benifit the Queen/Hive paradime as its primary goal. I didn't think may were wanting to speak of this, I feel as though it has been forgotten or something. People have to understand, the alien queen syndrome was already in existence as one method of extraction as any life form-organism has to have a population to originate from and a reasonable healthy populated one at that. Than Adaptive Eugenics kicks in in particular with the alien as it can operate in isolation from the colony. It becomes sytematic and sets about rebuilding its numbers so as to have allies, helpers that will work to build a new colony in preservatuion of the Hive mentality. At times it creates a queen when the odds are against its survival being certain. So they are not disparate life cycle liniages, they are all part and parcel of the one species.

MemberFacehuggerAug-03-2012 9:02 AMA lot of footage of all three death scenes was cut due to being either to graphic violence wise or went against Ridley Scott's wishes of not showing to much of the Alien.
Brett's Death:
Originally after Brett turns around and faces the alien the alien, in a curious slow motion, begins to reach out for Brett's head. At the same time the alien's tail begins to rise between Brett's legs. The Alien begins to squeeze Brett's head causing blood to appear. At the same time the alien's tail pierces Brett's back. The Alien then whips Brett off into the airduct screaming (with blood spurting everywhere) as Ripley and Parker arrived.
Brett then becomes a cocoon where he undergoes a sort of 'metamorphosis' (?) process turning him into an egg.
Dallas was the intended new host for this new facehugger.
Some of the original footage cut from Brett's death can be found in many places in various documentaries and production stills.
Parker & Lamberts Death:
Once again a lot of violence and Alien shots were cut from the scene. You've seen the Alien 'crabwalk' scene. That's only one take of it but you got the idea. We was supposed to hear the motion tracker on the cart at the entrance way going off but being drowned out by the noise of the coolant cylinders Lambert was throwing on the floor.
The Alien appears from an air vent and makes it's approach towards Lambert slowly rising in front of her.
A lot of stuff was cut from Parker's death. After the Aliens whacks Parker with it's tail Parker goes flying into a wall busting a valve. The Alien then slowly moves towards Parker picking him up by his head. Still stunned the Alien begins to squeeze Parker's head the same way it did with Brett followed by slamming him into the wall a few times. Parker manages to hit/punch the Alien a couple of times but with no effect. He's then /head bitten' and the Alien lets go of him. Parker slumps to the floor dead.
Lambert was originally supposed to run and hide inside a locker only to die of fright. This was changed at the last minute.
I've been meaning to compile a collection of stills and screens of all the missing parts of each scene for a deleted scenes section for my blog but haven't gotten round to it yet. I might post them here first though when i get chance.
