MemberOvomorphJun-23-2012 4:52 AMIs 'Prometheus' a prequel as it situates events before 'Alien'? Is it sequel (even though it is set before the events of 'Alien', it follows 'Alien Resurrection' literally speaking (i.1 1997 for AR/ 2012 for Prom)? Is it a franchise starter? i.e a new series of films that steers away from the Alien franchise. Is it a reboot? (what the hell is a reboot - everyone is using it to explain everything! Can we have some thoughts?).
I would love for as many people as possible to respond and offer their thoughts...fandom is the place to look for some truth - you are all the experts here! Does canon even matter? Should 'Prometheus' follow a trajectory that makes sense? Do you try and connect the dots between 'Prometheus' and the Alien films?

MemberOvomorphJun-23-2012 4:59 AMPrometheus isn't directly a alien prequel, because its end doesn't lead to Alien. But, it is set 30 years before Alien, so, it can be considered a prequel.
It may also be a franchise starter, and its sequels will probably connect those dots.

MemberTrilobiteJun-23-2012 5:17 AMPrometheus isn't a prequel nor is it a sequel.
Its set before Alien, in the same universe, and introduces us to the Engineers (formerly known as the Space Jockey's). That is all.

MemberOvomorphJun-23-2012 5:42 AMIf it is in the same universe, does the story connect to Alien via the birth of the xenomorph at the end of the film? Does this not make it a prequel? I am not trying to say you are right or wrong - I find it fascinating that these terms have such elasticity that it depends on your viewpoint. Is it a reboot? What is a reboot Snorkelbottom?

MemberOvomorphJun-23-2012 6:01 AMThe problem with this films xenomorph is that it's evolution made many design changes compared to the design in the alien. I mean this alien is a lot different. I guess the evolution design responds to the planetary condition.

MemberOvomorphJun-23-2012 6:04 AMTo me, prometheus is an indirect prequel
to alien. While alien focuses on the
xenomorph threat, prometheus focuses
on the engineers and their creation
and motifs. The xenomorph takes a
Sub role so far though the deacon
Is definetly a treat and hint, how the
Xenomorph evolves, though through the
mural it is clear that the classic xenomorph
Existed long before the events in prometheus.

MemberOvomorphJun-23-2012 6:36 AMThis film is running along side the Alien franchise so to speak or soon will be in the time frame reference. But like reaching for the distant line of the horizon out in front of you, it is always maintianed at a distinguishable distance so as its own franchise development moves on into up and coming films (presumably) in future years; the Alien franchise will be there just never quite getting up close and personal. But, as with each film that comes (again, presumably) the Prometheus franchise will likely move ever furhter away from being so closely or loosly connected in any way to the Alien franchise (I'm guessing at that too. Things can change and develope as time goes by). I'll bet Ridley Scott will want to occationally flirt with little nods towards the Alien franchise and to Promethues franchise too. Sort of self referencing his first film through the second one or third. Unless he may want to take a bold step and oinsome way inter-connect the possible third film to be quite closely connected to that of Alien while still branching out in its own right.

MemberOvomorphJun-23-2012 8:12 AMit's another take on the Alien universe, A sort of Remake of the Idea.
plus it's a prequel to the sequel coming. A "pre-sequel".
