Original Fossilized Space Jockey

Prometheus was great, and I enjoyed every minute, right down to the last scene of the movie, BUT, I have a question. In the original "Alien" film, Dallas, Kane and Lambert discover the "space-jockey" fossilized in the space craft's bridge chair - apparently, having been done in by a chest-exploding alien. HOWEVER, in the film "Prometheus", the space-jockey that attempts to pilot his ship to earth to carry out his deadly deed is struck out of the sky by the valiant crew of Prometheus. After the vessel crash-lands, the space-jockey attempts to make his way back to Dr. Shaw, in an effort to kill her. He not only doesn't succeed in killing her, but he is done-in by the giant first-generation alien face-hugger behind the door of Prometheus' escape shuttle. QUESTION, how can this be the fossilized space-jockey that Dallas, Kane and Lambert discovered in the crashed space craft in the original "Alien" movie if the jockey had ventured out of that vessel to go searching for Dr. Shaw?

Did they developed the Xenomorph, or just experiment further with an organism that they learned about? Whatever the answer, they seem to worship Xenomorphs. Odd that they worship such a frightening, deadly creature. And what evidence were we given about high intelligence? They seem like angry, brutish space thugs, who apparently had no plan at all to deal with an outbreak that some would agrue was inevitable. It seemed to me that the Engineers were almost machine-like in their personalities, if you can even say they had personalities. Like they were just carrying out a program on LV223, and that's all.

Prometheus is an introduction to the species we saw sat in the chair in Alien, who they are, where they're from, what they story is, and how their story relates to us. Ridley has said for years that he wanted to explore the ins and outs of this mysterious race. We have had the introduction of the Engineers (formerly nicknamed Space Jockeys) and been given the following information: - They seeded life on fledgling worlds in the distant past. - This process led to our creation. - They are an ancient race of Humans. - They developed the Xenomorph. - They nurtured us in the past, but then sought to eradicate us. - They are frighteningly advanced and experts in genetic and bio-mechanical engineering. Half of that is what we have been waiting for, the other half is adding to grandiose and epic nature of who they are. Any subsequent sequels will elaborate on these points in both frightening and awe-inspiring ways.

Glad you said it first Punx, I've said it at least a dozen times this past fortnight. The derelict in Alien IS NOT the juggernaut in Prometheus.

So "Prometheus" is canon, and not necessarily a prologue? I don't buy it. I have no problems with that, and sure Ridley can make entire planetary histories with the amount of detail he crams into our brains. But wouldn't it be something to really really explore the differences and looping relationships between Engineer, Human, Android and Alien , Why would one choose an interstellar war story over something far more subtle ?

Found a really cool Space Jockey model kit....it's a bit pricey, but I may pull the trigger on this one tonight! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Halcyon-ALIEN-Aliens-SPACE-JOCKEY-Engineer-vinyl-MODEL-KIT-PROMETHEUS-/300731878958?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4605044e2e

When I first saw ALIEN in '79 I assumed that the Space Jockey was just another poor sap that crossed paths with the Xenomorph. I'm having trouble understanding how Ridley Scott thought this was the story we fans have been waiting for.

It was a side story. I thought it was great. Personally, seeing an XYZ of the derelict would have been a disappointment. Besides, the derelict is ancient.
I may work for the company, but im really an OK guy.

I'd just like to say I enjoyed the movie very much BUT... here goes my rant: First, I'd like to say I respect the work of Mr. Scott, but though I think this movie is hooked on a clever idea, I cannot accept that the original space jockey was human-like. My point here is: how times change: back at the 70's we were all wondered by all possibilities in this vast universe that surrounds us - the original movie is about the unhuman, the dark possibilities of space - no wonder H.R. Giger contributed to the film. Now, 33 years later, it seems we can only think of the universe as a giant mirror for our ego, to enhance our already exaggerated sense of self-importance. The scene where they find the giant head says it all IMHO. How much did we turn narcissistic in all this time! I agree with LV420, this was not the story we've been waiting for.

I must admit I expected the slightly elephant alien like in the graphic novels and the old space jockey did look cooler to me than the new ones for some reason also expected a history of the xenos home world were they took it from - who knows maybe there will be more to the xenos - maybe they are in charge / the black goo maker is a god like thing that controls all etc. etc....a million possibilities and we'll just have to wait...

It is a shame that the alien Space Jockey or Bio Engineers are not the elephant-looking alien beings as I was hoping they were going to turn out to be. I do like what Prometheus film has to offer but I do wish that somehow the Space Jockey did, for some reason to be invented as yet, in fact turn out to be some giant elephant headed creature of some type that has its reasons for wanting to end up marooned upon LV 426.

Die-Wolf's point was awesome. I also agree with a lot of you that the design of the SJ was greatly disapointing.

I agree with Die_Wolf's sentiments, and I think this review of the film captures that same spirit: http://www.prometheus-movie.com/community/forums/topic/8079 The film reeks of "anthropomorphism", the tendency to express ideas, experiences, things, etc. from a very humanistic perspective. The original ALIEN was the exact opposite and I was hoping the sequel would transport us further into that Gigerish domain where fascination, mystery and horror collide. The only thing I disagree with is that the Jockey is "minor"; I mean, come on- look at that thing! It still gives me the creeps. =)

@zombiezilla I built that kit when it was released and still have it. I was amazed at the detail, level of complexity and accuracy with this and every Halcyon kit. The original Alien artists were involved with the production of these kits. Too bad the company went belly up.
