MemberOvomorphJul-03-2012 11:45 PMGiven this is an R-rated movie, I'm hesitant on taking my daughter to see it as she wants to. Is the R-rating for violence and horror only- i can handle that- - or are there more inappropriate areas that I should be made aware of.

MemberOvomorphJul-03-2012 11:54 PMi can live with graphic and gross, she's 14. just wanted to make sure there wasn't overly foul language or any sex scenes.

AdminEngineerJul-03-2012 11:50 PMThere is one scene in particular which is a bit graphic.. a couple probably depending on how sensitive you are. It's your call - if it helps, some countries have Prometheus rated as PG 13+.

MemberOvomorphJul-03-2012 11:53 PMofficial information as to ratings:
PROMETHEUS is a science fiction horror film in which a group of people travel to a distant moon. It was classified '15' for strong violence, gore, threat and horror.
The film contains a number of scenes of strong violence that feature heavy blows and bloody detail. For example, in one scene a character's arm is broken, revealing blood and bone, and in another scene a character's head is smashed against the floor, resulting in a large spurt of blood. This emphasis on bloody detail exceeds the terms of the BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/'12' and is more appropriately classified at '15' where the Guidelines state 'Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury'. There are also some scenes featuring gory detail, both when dead bodies are seen and when people are injured. One scene features some gory surgical detail that exceeds the type of 'occasional gory moments' that may be permitted at '12A'.
The Guidelines at '12A'/'12' also state 'Moderate physical and psychological threat may be permitted, provided disturbing sequences are not frequent or sustained'. The second half of the film in particular features a sense of threat towards the central characters that is both frequent and sustained.
PROMETHEUS also includes one use of strong language and one implied use of strong language, when a remark is broken up by static. It also includes some undetailed verbal sex references and a brief scene in which a couple start to have sex, without any nudity or other detail.

MemberOvomorphJul-03-2012 11:56 PMI will say I have seen a hundred movies way worse than this, including PG-13 rated ones.
If you go to this movie LOOKING for inappropriate scenes or references, then yes you will find them. But if you go to this movie LOOKING to be amazed by visuals and the ideas of where we came from, but with of course the backbone of the original ALIEN movies, then you won't be left with the memory of it being a horrific movie.
That's the best explanation I can give without knowing you or your daughter personally so don't shoot the messenger!

AdminEngineerJul-03-2012 11:58 PM14 Year olds these days are exposed to so much already they're nearly completely numb to disturbing imagery.
But no, no graphic sex scenes. There is a bit of cursing, but all in all, not an abundance of it - which is nice for a change.

AdminPraetorianJul-04-2012 12:02 AM@panevino; As a woman, one scene really upset me and it deals with a specific female issue. I guess it boils down to you knowing what is best for your daughter.

MemberOvomorphJul-04-2012 12:04 AMI'm sorry but I find it sooo bizarre that killing and violence is ok to show kids but the natural act of sex is just too much. We live in a strange world.
If killing and violence is ok then at least non-xxx "love making" scenes should be ok.
I probably just opened a big fat can of worms but oh well.
I took my 10 year old nephew to see it and he loved it. He's seen it 2 times now. I think it's cool that he kinda gets it when it seems some or maybe even most grown adults don't. I had to explain a couple of things to him but before I knew it he was throwing his own theories at me.

MemberOvomorphJul-04-2012 12:12 AMIf she has a computer or a friend with a computer, shes probably already seen much much more than the most disturbing parts of this film.

MemberOvomorphJul-04-2012 12:35 AM@Forever War...Great point. There's some f**ked up stuff online, and with idiots posting "reaction videos" of themselves watching stuff I really don't want to mention, viewers curiosity sometimes get the better of them and horrible things are burned into their memory for life. I know because I was once an idiot and had this happen to me. It's one of the things I regret most in my life.
