Prometheus: Final words?

MemberOvomorphJuly 07, 20121055 Views17 RepliesI really loved this film. It was near perfect as far as I'm concerned though I did have a major issue with the two pilots not blinking twice when told to ram the Engineer's ship. Anyway, this is our Prometheus analyses. Hope you find it interesting since many points have been discussed here. I would love to hear your thoughts on my theories. Thanks.

@kitty69 - you should hook up with deftones and spawn a post together - one about esoterie answers!

Brilliant, puts my out of this world theories to rest and they way you explain it in kind of a storyboard representation, is like a film maker explaining it. There are only one or two microscopic parts i didn't agree with, but I don't feel like getting in to that right now. I just wanted to comment before this post got buried, just like all the other smart, thought provoking, real-world explanations have during time here.

Great synopsis, but light on answers.
Random responses (in no particular order):
** I don't believe Vickers was a robot; she drank vodka, showed tons of emotion and couldn't get into her space suit/head bubble fast enough when escaping Prometheus (since David didn't need either, she wouldn't have wasted the time in such an emergency). Lastly, Weyland noets David doesn't have a soul -- if she was a robot David would know that and stand up, crying "HEY! SHE doesn't have one, either!"
** Hard to tell exactly what sets off the awoken Engineer; was it Shaw being struck or what David said to him -- or did he not like the shampoo David uses, 'cause he really goes ape-shit after touching David's hair.
** The "evolution" of the goo -- worms -- penispede -- zombie -- Cuddles and finally the Deacon really seems meaningless, since the Xeno alredy exists (vis a vis the mural).
OK, almost bed time in the Eastern time zone. More tomorrow...

@red wolf - I agree with you that it is light on answers. In fact it is another "mere assertion" by someone liked the film that likes to go on about its supposed genius!

@ Red - Agreed.
I liked the movie when I walked out of the theatre. Given the amount of time I've had to consider it, however, I'm annoyed at the total lack of any answers, and the total rehash of scenes from the original film and its sequels.

I'm not saying its genius. I simply saying that the answers are there to be interpreted by the individual, That's all.

Excellent write-up, Kitty. You and I are definitely on the same page.
But no matter how many times you say it, there are always going to be numbskulls who want every little detail spelled out for them in a movie. They don't like thinking about alternative possibilites, the meaning of (alien) life or stuff like that. The chance of them "getting" a movie as unusual as Prometheus is very slim.
To such poor souls: I can't lie about your chances, but you have my sympathy.
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent

Just a couple of thoughts on your excellent blog:
‘Big things have small beginnings’– If the Engineers sought out their creators, did they find the “Goo” rather than the Xenomorph per se?
‘Vickers is a Replicant’ – That would make her a truly tragic character, but probably not beyond the power or arrogance of the man who (se company) defeated cancer.

Re your issue with the two pilots not blinking at sacrificing their lives
A possible reason for the two crewmen’s behavior is to complete an allegory of the Crucification with Janek, the name meaning “God is gracious”, arms outstretched, sacrificing himself to save mankind, with the two crew (“crew” as in gang members and thus as per the companions of Christ when crucified?) alongside him. All the main characters directly reflect the origin of their names (David: beloved; Meredith Vickers: great lord substitute etc).
Perhaps the characters were named in this way to give the movie an extra hidden meaning or scriptwriter's joke that might be 'Lost' on people?

@zzplural Thank you for your thoughts. You can't ask people to work for there answers. If they want a popcorn movie they should just watch George Lucas.
@xenodochy Just another theory but its possible that they went to go find their creators and were killed by many of them. They decided to take the "black goo" organism as a way of being able to control their gods but that eventually bit them in the ass too. Just a thought.
as for Vickers being a replicant, I believe that its a real possibility, whether you call her a replicant or bio engineered human. Thank you for your thoughtful questions.
Also your theory on the character names is absolutely brilliant. Love it.

I’m not alone in putting forward the name: attribute theory, which if correct may be relevant to the plot or is probably just a teasing kick by Damian – sorry, Mr Damon Lindelof.
The other subliminal aspect, if it exists and I’ve been shot down faster than Janek and Crew downing alien spacecraft on this, is of the very “Bomber”/”Juggernaut” itself. If you look at the ends of each ‘arm’ in the photo on your blog, do you see the left ‘hand’ holding an urn of the ancient Greek variety? And the right ‘hand’ resembling two outstretched fingers with a plate between them? Is this a reference to the sequel to the Prometheus (forethought) story, the tale of Epimetheus (after thought) and Pandora with her Box or more accurately, her Urn, both the gifts of Zeus? It seems very redolent of Mr Lindelof’s writing and may or may well not indicate subsequent sinister shenanigans. The urn, if it is an urn, is in the left hand of the Juggernaut and ‘left hand’ of course is ‘sinister’ in Latin. Yes, Prometheus is a Greek myth, not Roman, but the Romans did absorb the Greek pantheon.
Or I may just need a long lie down in a still, cool room.

Re: “Urn” and “Hand”
The 'urn' and 'hand', if that's what they are, can be seen more clearly, being shot from above the craft and just above ground in the 3rd and 11th photos respectively in the Steve Messing, Art Director, montage at the link from the post "Steve Messing interview - inc/ concept Art with interesting annotations" by MVMNT this website.

You're right about the connection/similarity between the large phallic control system and the Predator shoulder cannon. There are more shots which I think bear this out at another post by MVMNT, "More Prometheus concept and production art - SJ Chair design, interactive panoramas and video render".
More mind games but veeeery interesting!

".. did have a major issue with the two pilots not blinking twice when told to ram the Engineer's ship.."
In watching/reading Veterans from WWII.they did mentionhow they had expected to die...and were surprised that they were alive after an battle.
In fact one Vet mentionhow his friend looked peaceful ..dead on the battlefield,,and that was fine with him.
As far as the scene in the movie,,maybe at some point all 3 pilots..realized that they were not going to get out alive..and swayed by Shaw's words...decided.,,to go out as heros..
Be choicelessly aware as you move through life
