Okay with all my crazy theories that I've had in my mind, I've come to one conclusion about the movie and how Ridley PURPOSELY changed the script. Yes I said he did it on purpose. Go ahead and look it up. There was a writer established in 2009. Quote: By July 2009, Scott was attached to direct the film, and screenwriter Jon Spaihts was hired to pen the script based on his pitched idea for a direct Alien prequel. However, by July 2010, Lindelof had been hired to redevelop Spaihts's screenplay into a more original work. :End Quote Source - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prometheus_(film) - Q: Why would Ridley have a sudden change of heart about the script, and chose Lindelof of all people - (the creator and writer of LOST, a very very mysterious show) ? A: Because he had a light bulb over his head! - We see in the movie, Shaw who we come to figure out is a true believer in God right? - In the dream sequence we see her take on her fathers beliefs. - We see flashes of the cross and references to Jesus on the cross throughout the whole movie ("Hands up". There are many topics on this site about it just search. - We where told the movie WAS going to be about how Jesus was an Engineer, but we crucified him and blah blah blah (the point is "God and Jesus". Anyway I could go on and on and on but I want to get to the real meat and potatoes. - So this goes out to everyone, the ones who loved it, the ones who hated it, the ones who speculate, the ones who JUST CAN'T GET THIS MOVIE OUT OF OUR HEAD!!!: Q: What happens when we are watching the movie? A: We see Shaw, and through repetition, over and over with flashes of the cross, her words, etc....we all come to the conclusion that she is full of faith in God, the Almighty. Q: But why is she at the Isle of Sky, digging for clues about aliens? Why does she strongly want to embark on this mission after discovering that maybe aliens created us? Why does she name these beings Engineers, instead of God? A: Because NO MATTER WHAT she believes, deep down inside of her, engraved in her soul, she STILL WANTS ANSWERS! Something draws her curiosity out of her, her ambition. Even though she witnesses the death of her lover, even though she dreams of her dead father? Even though everything bad that could happen, does happen, she keeps on going, never giving up. It's something we all feel at one point or another in all our lives. - There is no rhyme or reason to it but it's there. - It's our 6th sense. - It's what helps us get up in the morning after a shitty previous day. - It's what keeps us going, day after day. - Why do we keep coming up with conclusions that the movie is good, when there are such huge, obvious mistakes? Why do we all keep coming up with our own theories, just to change our minds and come up with another one? And we will keep doing this until we find our answers. Even if it means we have to deal with people that will put us down, and doubt our beliefs, and make us second guess even our own best judgments? ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Because it's just that thing that's inside of us, that we just can't explain but it drives us towards our goals, it gives us hope, especially at the darkest times, Think of Shaw, and how this unseen force lifted her up, pushing her towards survival, and when the chips where down, she gathered them right back up, all due to the unexplained push and pull inside of her. THAT is what this movie is showing us.

Well you know what movies bring out the deteriorating hope in ME that in the future there will be other sci-fi movies that parallel movies like ALIEN and The Thing? Movies like The Avengers. Battleship. Transformers. Spider-man. ALIEN 3. Alien Resurrection. The Green Lantern. Iron Man. Do you need me to keep going? Just stop for a second and realize, that true true masterpieces in Science Fiction do not come around as often as any other type of movie. And THERE IS A REASON that they made VHS, DVD, and now Blu-Ray. So that you can go and put in Alien, The Thing, 2001, Inception, and whatever other movies that Prometheus can't be better than. So just because TO YOU in your own little world, don't like the movie, and nothing that will ever come from this movie will ever make you like it. Does not mean that my theory can't be true in what Ridley Scott was TRYING to do. Key word = TRYING Just because I COULD be right that this was his focus while making the movie doesn't mean that you have to like that reason. Like I already said, you and it seems some other people with this same mindset, will NEVER come to grips with enjoying Prometheus fully so why even bother to complain about it? And if you guys could get past the few tiny parts where characters aren't fully developed in a damn movie about the biggest questions every human has ever asked, as if those questions aren't good enough for you to ponder on your own, you need a movie to explain it to you, well then there really must be no hope for the human race. Hell if I'm right than all Ridley Scott could say is he TRIED a different approach, instead of sticking to the already tried and true Alien storyline where people get faced f**&^& by the Xenomorphs, oh wait that's already been done how many? 6 times now? Gettin a little old wasn't it? Or he could have just green screened it and got the Xenomorphs, Predators, Avatars, the alien from Independence day, the Hulk, Spiderman, Thor, Bruce Wayne, Oprah Winfrey, and Mickey Mouse together to fight alongside Shea Lebuff, Brad Pitt, Robert Downey Jr, Zack Galifinakis, Will Ferrell, to save the world and in the end there's a big group hug, and a high five, just like eveeeeeeeery other movie now a days. Good day to you.

No you are wrong. Simply because in order for your premise to work one has to like the movie. I want meaning in this movie; I want it to make sense in a way that makes me think differently. I want it to make me blind to its imperfections, but it isn't capable. I don't want everything spelled out. If you want to leave it open like Jacob's Ladder, Naked Lunch, or Inception go right ahead, but make it believable - don't fill with nit wits! It could have been so much smarter and still begged the questions about existence, black goo, and God - it just didn't. Keep trying to post it and sell it though. You are starting to reach me with you waning post that are finally admitting that it "was poorly written." You are right about the fact he's bringing something out in me about science fiction and that is a deteriorating hope that in the future there will be other sci-fi movies that parellel movies like ALIEN and The Thing.

It seems to be a popular thing to have Lindelof step in and re-write scripts atm. I think it's a studio decision not the directors, because studio execs know he can draw a crowd and make them money. "He was also recently hired to re-write act three of the upcoming zombie film, "World War Z." Click-->Damon Lindelof Lines Up 'The Leftovers' At HBO

Yes in this real world that's true. He was brought in to the Prometheus project to make it super mysterious. Be it because he's the "it" guy right now or what have you. Either way my point isn't about the writers brought in, its about the idea that made Ridley Scott want to change the story. My point is, this movie is about that unexplained drive that lives in all of us. It was inside Shaw. The reviews and theories based on this movie, are they NOT about the unexplained? Are they not about the people TRYING to explain what was left unexplained? Ridley Scott is showing us through Shaw, and through our own determination to figure this movie out, that there is a certain "something" in us that keeps us going forward in life, in faith, in the good times and the bad. That thing inside of us that draws us to the world of science fiction. It made us all want to connect the dots, even when at times it seemed like this was just a "poorly written movie" or "it just doesn't fit any of the mythology good enough". The wonders, the imagination, the "what ifs" the "whys". All the beautiful artwork, and movies, and books, that have ALL come from the simple idea of science fiction. There is no real "meaning" in this movie. But the overall purpose of him making this movie, was to bring that something out in all of us science fiction fans. Right or wrong?

OK, I’ve seen a lot of skirting around this issue and have been tempted to give a thread dedicated to the subject. Why would Shaw be at the Isle of Skye ? The answer, is looking for The Holy Grail of course. There’s plenty of folk I know who made that connection the second they saw it. If we were to believe that Christ was of alien origin, then the evidence that would exist would be the bloodline or blood of Christ. Lets face it, there are plenty of theories, books and films about this. Don’t forget that both Ridley and Giger are well read in the historical and architectural backgrounds of this subject. Any seeming connections to Templars, Masons, and King Arthur might emerge through default, since all subjects can be shown to be connected with the Holy Grail. Any further discussion on this, remains to be seen. Some points that may arise. What if Peter Weyland had discovered the Holy Grail. (That would shed some light on Davids knowledge of things). Would findings on LV223 have significant comparative value against a specimen of the Holy Grail. Have fun. Oh Yeah. Should anyone come up with a convincing argument that Hobbits and Xenomorphs are related, then I'm going straight to the place where the nuts hunt the squirrels.

Okay... Its well known that John Spaihts version of the screenplay for Prometheus was a direct prequel to Alien. Realizing that was a one shot ticket, with limited scope for sequels Ridley Scott wanted a different approach - a movie set before Alien, in the same universe but creating and expanding upon its own mythology. He has said this many, many times. Therefore he employed Damon Lindelof to rework the original screenplay to add mystery, of which Damon is well known for, to the screenplay. And by looking at what we got with Prometheus it is possible to see how that original screenplay worked... - Prometheus landed on LV-426 - The urns would have originally been Alien eggs - Crashed Juggernaut was the derelict from Alien - Engineer climbed back into the derelicts chair before getting bursted ...Originally the screenplay would have featured eggs instead of urns, Milburn and Fifield would have been facehugged, possible Holloway too. Basically Damon barely changed anything, just worked with Ridley on a more mysterious aspect to the creatures we see in the film and changing the location.

Well shall be treated to the original script in the blu ray I am told so we can all see exactly how this panned out then. I also saw a interview were damon said basically he bullied ridley into telling him what to put in the script which was interesting. I am guessing this would just be the overall idea not the finer points. It is a strange mish mash of utter stupidity and wonderful ideas - I too wish it was not filled with nit wits doing things that just plain didnt make sense in a real world. If you build a real world stick to it dont suddenly slap b movie joke deaths into it and cardboard characters (thank god the only 2 good characters survived) etc. etc. . I do currently hate some of the stuff damon / ridley did with this but the way it is made it can still be saved with sequels virals websites dc etc. .

"....Realizing that was a one shot ticket, with limited scope for sequels..." After reading the various posts,,the above line seems to make the best path for understanding the 'whys'.. Does your story need to be told in a 2 hour hot shot,approach>...or a 3 (or more part) story? Would a better approach be to present a 6 hour movie that includes all of the questions and answers,,,in one sitting? I mention this because my son reminded me of the time we attended a theater showing of the original 3 Star Wars movies back to back to back.. Yes it was a long experience,,but as the movies went form one story to the next to sort of tied up many if not most of the storrylines.. ..and some 25 years later that triple feature movie event still had meaning to him..and me..

This is a different kind of film for Ridley Scott and I suspect it has alot to do with the combination (greater than the sum of the parts) of Scott and Lindelof. The difference is that while this film has some similar themes actually as Kingdom of Heaven with regard to the problems with religion, it has very little literal meaning. That is, all the scenes are created to make a symbolic statement that transcends the physical, literal substance of the action portrayed. For those who are not used to or adept at interpreting symbols within art this presents a distinct challenge beyond the scope of their experience. I don't say this to be exclusivist, only to point out that Scott is much less interested in portraying literal information in this film and much more interested, after having made scores of such films with the underlying meaning of life. He's gone all philosophical on us and this is what is driving so many people crazy. Example: the scence where Janek crashes Prometheus into the alien vessel is much less about two spaceships colliding and much more about sacrifice, the ggodness of one man as opposed to Weyland's self-interest and corporate greed; about a comparison perhaps between the original sacrifice at the beginning of the film that creates life and Eden, and about the fall that may lead to the destruction of that life. If you're looking at the spaceships to see if they have the scientifically correct propulsion system, or if David's head is in the right place in the wreck then you're missing the WHOLE point. I could take every single scene in the film and break it down that way as many of you have already done throughout this site over the last weeks. We simply have a collision of two audiences. Those desparately seeking cool science fiction action movies, and a director that isnt the least bit interested in making one - visually interesting and symbolic yes - literally truthful, scientically accurate, perfectly logical? Not so much.

Yes I can understand that there is the obvious,,and the more subtle.symbolic storyline. This is what goes on in real life where you meet someone who says all the right things,,,,but yoiu sense there is a hidden agenda,, Trust your instinct.. The thing is why do people go to movies at all? We sort of know good and evil themes,,what we do and what we should do... For me the message,,,,and the medium makes a difference..and for a Scifi story I want that spectacular effect..otherwise i could just read book,,or even watch it on a small screen.. One other itme I wanted to mention..Producers ansd especially Directors seem to be obcessed with detaqils,,how you place your hand..stand..costume design,,ect..so the details to matter. I mean wouldn't you want bring a complete ..accurate dispay to the screen to tell your story? Otherwise just have the actors,,little scenery(Shakespeare) and a powerful story to tell..

Wow. You guys are really blowing this out of proportion big time. How come every theory that's put in to a thread on here just gets pushed aside, and people start talking about their own beliefs. Shouldn't every post have replies that REFER to the topic at hand? Yes everybody has their own opinion , I'm not saying that if you don't agree then don't even bother replying, all I'm asking is to give a thought that is related to the general topic of the post. You shouldn't just start going on about something opposite, because people will read it, and then comment on that, and the original thought just gets washed away. I stated a theory, and instead of people kindly giving their opinion on MY theory, they start rambling on about their own ides and then throwing all kinds of other wrenches in to the machine. If you have a totally different view about somebodies theory, than please start your own post about it, I mean we need to try and be organized here.

And now my follow up. It also seems to me that most people on here aren't fully reading the topic, kinda just seems like you're all skimming through, and then as soon as you see something you disagree with, BAM you're done reading and now it's time to reply! No, please take the time to read everything that people put down on here for their theories or topics. Stop judging the books by their covers in a sense. Take your time, let peoples theories sink in to your head, there is no harm in just going along with someones theory even if it's just for a couple minutes, and then if you totally don't agree, then let your voice be heard in a way that gives insight on the original theory or thought at hand. Starting off by replying how you know this or you know that, or you know Ridley tried to do this, or Lindelof was brought on to do this. All that is just speculation, or something you read on the internet, and unless its from an interview with said director or writer or so forth, then how the hell can you know what they where thinking at the time the movie was being made. Everyone needs to stop being so closed minded when it comes to someones theories, and their reply all of a sudden, turns in to what they think they know is the truth. Kindly disagree, offer your opinion as to WHY you disagree, give maybe a little thought of your own, and then if it dawns on you that maybe you should start a topic on your beliefs, then go for it. I'm just tired of seeing a topic about one thing, and then when you read down the list of responses, something else completely different has emerged from it, and that's what pushes people away from returning to the site, or trying to offer their thoughts. This is a community so let's treat it like one.

I posted this on another thread its kinda similar. "That gets me to another thing I think the film is about. I think Prometheus is like Contact and many other films. In that it is asking can Science and Religion co-exist? Do findings by Science disprove God? How does finding an alien effect/affect (I still always get effect and affect mixed up) the belief in a God? Especially like in the film if you found an alien species that appears to have created you but is trying to kill you. How much hardship can you go through (your loved one dying and your whole world crashing around you) but still keep your faith."

@ ZMAN3494 Finally someone who understands what I'm proposing here! It's a film after all right? So lets put our film making thinking caps on and understand, that when a film maker wants to get a point across, what do we notice? Repetition! Religion is flashed before our eyes, and people start talking about Christianity.....no the reason the cross and people "sacrificing" themselves are shown to us over, and over, and over, and over again, is because they are the most recognizable things connected with religion AS A WHOLE. It's so obvious that every time we see Shaw's necklace or somebody sacrificing themselves, or the image of someone on the cross......a big red sign should flash in our head that says " R E L I G I O N" ....not "Catholic beliefs, or Jewish beliefs, or what have you....but religion as a whole, mixed with science.....both are being tested, and our belief in the meaning of the movie is being tested.... So again @ ZMAN3494 I thank you.

I just completed reading none of the above post - simply because someone stated that every time a new thread is started blab blab about their own beliefs. Ummm yes; you are correct - our own beliefs. Just like every thread you start is some new idea or possibility of yours or someone else's. It is very difficult to not interject our own and stop reading in the middle of yours, because the idea isn't really that new or innovative. Me. I lack creativity so I read enough of someone else's to get my blood boiling a bit and go from there. To truly understand this you'd have to go back and read all of your post - start to finish! Every one! Ah, no cutting corners! Try not smile too much!
