So..a subatomic particle that goes by the name Higgs boson walks into a Church.

Forever War

....and a priest says "what are you doing here?" To which Higgs replied "Well, you can't have mass without me." And I'm hearing this, and other reactions to CERN's announcements of their findings lately...and of course my mind drifts back to Ridley and his themes in Prometheus. And I say to myself, 'how odd, that at the moment this so called key to the Universe is discovered, we have Prometheus, with its faith versus science questions...did Ridley line his film up to reflect these newfound realities? One of the postulations I have seen is that this particle is seen by some as making religion redundant...Is Ridley out in front of this with his film and will the science of David prevail over Shaws faith in Prom 2? Or is the itchiness of waiting for the Blu Ray got me twitching too much? What do you think?...your thoughts welcome, even if they include the inevitable bacon mit waffles.

This won't go over well with everyone, but since it is an opinion and has no bearing on truth or fact I will express it. I believe that 'religion' is a necessary part of a sentient lifeforms "evolutionary process". Polytheism.....Monotheism......Atheism. This is a process that CANNOT be rushed on any planet where intelligent life exists. Do not misunderstand "intelligent life" for lifeforms that are more intelligent than others of that species for it was quite "intelligent" of said lifeforms to have raised the questions regarding their place in the universe. One day, in my opinion, we will look back on Monotheism just like the monotheists look back now on the days of Polytheism. Was anyone at fault? Nope! We just went with our intuition based on the information available to us at that time. All of what I just said was harmless opinion, not revelation, so please agree to disagree and state YOUR thoughts....

There is also a joke within physics circles that things happen in pairs, to include discoveries. The Higgs boson is already displaying some unpredicted outcomes, decaying into particles not predicted. Anyway, the pairs thing could be just the general momentum of discovering the Higgs causes someone like Scott to push the idea of a science vs. religion question. There is also the puppet argument. I have mentioned it before. Popular culture expresses religious themes in art through the use of simulacra, in a secular way.. This movie follows the trend and simulacra are used in a very interesting way. We are copies of the engineer. David is a copy of humans. Who is the engineer a copy of? Which is the final question in the movie, if they created us, who created them? Movies typically put the protagonist as the copy. Now the table is flipped, and we are the copy. That point is very interesting and a new take on the trend. Back to the Higgs, the head of CERN joked that we should be able to create anti-Higgs fields that eliminate momentum allowing a trip to Mars in a few minutes. Hope we figure out how to use the God particle in short order.

Few facts - guy who named that particle was non religious and in fact agnostic/atheist. So that particle was named because of his understanding of "particle with multiple interpretation" which fits the description of religious god. So that attempt was to get attention towards this unknown mystery in particle physics. Technically, theologically higgs bosson has nothing to do with religion. But just because it is named with some religious inputs, it will be talked to death until conspiracy theorist and religious preacher or even half-knowing agnostic/atheists take juice out of it. Higgs bosson doesn't mean god exist or doesn't exist. I hope someday we can artificially create expanding universe model in lab which could answer some questions. The problem with naming inventions after religious personalities or anything from religion is just to create hype. Like it or not, prometheus from what I have gone through wikia and other sources, does not answer even panspermia. It is very weak theory in movie. I mean it based on assumption that engineers cells are responsible for life on this planet which is funny considering many species that are branched away from pre humans and modern humans.
Uncertainty is the only certainty there is, and knowing how to live with insecurity is the only security.
