Those that signed up at Weyland Industries have gotten an e-mail that directs you to phone them for employment opportunities at SDCC. If you call the number a strange message can be heard. Member "Bo Cherry" posted about this yesterday. It reminds me a lot of the the warning signal that the crew of the Nostromo hear in the movie Alien. A member named "Garcia el Gringo" graciously recorded the newest Weyland industries viral phone message for us. I am posting it here so it can get more attention than on the thread it was originally posted on. This definitely reminds me the Space Jockey warning in Alien. Damn it, I really would have liked to hear this in Prometheus :p

I'm guessing that it's just something that FOX threw together (i.e. gibberish), but I'm not sure of that at all. I don't recognize any of the words in it from "real Engineer." I wonder, could anyone reverse this (record it playing backwards) and post that here? Something about it sounds a tad "tampered with" to me. Hard to tell "how" tampered with... I'll do my best to decode it, but I can only do that if there's something actually there to decode. ;)

EDIT: I should really read the whole OP before I say anything...my bad man! Here's hoping we can decode the message soon!

Still can't figure out if the male voice is saying anything in English, or if some of the words are chopped up, but I for sure hear the female voice saying "what did he say?" Which is funny because that is EXACTLY what we're asking. I used to make hip hop beats and mess around with audio editing software, but trust me I'm no expert. I can't seem to figure out what filters to run the audio through in order to understand this better.

This really sounds like a backwards recording to me has anyone tried recording in reverse?

Yes I have reversed it. And I tried alot of other filters cleaning up the background noise, equalizer adjustments,, and pretty much everything else I can think of. Either some of the words are cut off, or it's just a different language.... But like I said I'm no by far no expert, so maybe somebody else can try their hand at manipulating the audio.. Good luck, fingers crossed.

Haha yea it's 1:30 am and I haven't had much sleep lately,, worked a lot of over time this week so letters are blending together lol. And on that note I'm gonna go to bed before I go insane! Hopefully I wake up and the audio clip is solved!! If not I'll try to add one of my "cleaned up" versions also...

Sounds good..... let your technology and your unconscious sleeping self work on it You MAY have answers in the light of day :) at least you wont have David watching you dream!

so, it's not Alien-related, it's not Engineer-language related. Looks like a cheap publicity stunt, like the Career video page (with its nasty narrative inserts). :(

I'm not sure we can say its not related to Alien or the Engineers yet... Shaw would tell you to have faith and David would ask you to wait while he deciphers the coding not that you could completely trust him with the full translation :)

So not only does Weyland Corp target investors(us) but in addition want you to activily create a better world..following Weyland vision. Casual/speculators need not apply. Sounds like a religious cult wanting more from believers.. Also I only see the Weyland name on this notice...THere was so9me talk of a merger with a competitor..

OK. I've slowed it down and reversed it myself. It's not reversed, that is, the language on the call has not been played backwards. Phonologically it's close to this: /owaar gorânt. ide varyu gât gææng gaarzdæng./ It could *almost* be Engineer, but the words /owaar/ and /gææng/ and /gaarzdææng/ seem problematic to me; primarily due to their endings. I might believe /owrr/ instead of /owaar/ but the /gææng/ and /gaarzdææng/ things are really problematic. Of course, the performer could be mispronouncing it... /Ide/ (possibly /ida/ mispronounced) could be a form of "this". And, /g(h)orânt/ could be a valid verb... /varyu(h)/ might also be a valid noun... I don't know... still trying to check. But, for now, don't get your hopes up. At a minimum I think it was something that FOX did as an extra promo thing. I don't believe it relates directly to the story in the film at all...

Interesting stuff, sukkal. I'm a bit disapointed to hear that it might not relate to the film's story, but you can't deny that something's going down here... 10-11-12 can't get here fast enough haha.

Clearly it's a rather big spend on marketing so, yes. *SOMETHING* will be happening on 10-11-12 (CE (North American calendar)). I just don't know if it is another theatrical release or not... ?? Pray for The Restoration...

Dude why couldn't it have been a date like 8-21-12 or something closer? 10-11-12 is TOO FAR AWAY! (I kid, of course) But seriously it better be something good...

I must say I enjoy the viral campaign that they have done with Prometheus.

MemberOvomorphJul-14-2012 6:16 PM
I agree with you Svanya. This entire campaign has awesome since the beginning. It's the best I've seen. (granted I've haven't seen many) Now that I really think about it, I'm glad that they're taking their precious time with this campaign....I mean, what are we gonna do when it's gone? Haha.

How anyone can act like they seriously know how to speak and translate the language used for about 3 milliseconds in the film and barely audible to begin with, is beyond me. Nice try.

deftones1986

MemberOvomorphJul-14-2012 8:36 PM
@Mizere. It's called people that dedicate their LIVES to doing that kind of stuff. Deciphering languages are actually fun and/or a part of some peoples career choice. Where do you think the government goes to for such cases where they need an audio clip from a part of an investigation turned inside and out? What do you think people who study ancient languages for a living do? Just like some people like (insert sport here) and others don't. So you might want to expand your mind and think for a second, just because people here can't figure this out, doesn't mean there aren't people out there who would find this audio childs play to figure out, knowing that it was DELIBERATELY run through certain processes to make it distorted. Yes, most people ON HERE can't figure it out right away because I'm guessing it's not part of any prometheus-movie forum members profession. So next time don't say "How anyone can act like they seriously know how to speak and translate the language" because you'd be surprised at what people enjoy doing and consider a hobby or career choice. I'm only saying this because you came off as a bit ignorant as to you're approach. This link explains that the Engineer language was indeed created. The Engineers’ language is based on Dr. Biltoo's own version of reconstructed Proto-Indo-European. So tell Dr. Biltoo that you don't understand how this NEW audio clip couldn't be figured out and he'd laugh in your face (hopefully)

@Mizere— Your use of the expressions "act like" and "nice try" do come across as quite rude. If it was not your intent to offend, please explain. For about two years I have been studying constructed languages extensively—specifically those that have been commissioned by film franchises to enhance their movies. When I heard that David (and one of the other Engineers) learned and spoke in an 'alien' language in the film, I surmised that Dr. Biltoo was its creator and I was correct. I have been in touch with him. He did not just create a bunch of gibberish. He did a very thoughtful version of a language that is theorized to have been spoken on Earth over 5,000 years ago. He is a professor of Sanskrit at the University of London and well-versed in the theories of Proto-Indo-European (PIE) that was mentioned by deftones1986 above. Perhaps one day there will be a more thorough sketch of the language available, but for now a version of Schleicher's Fable exists and it's quite an extensive text that reveals a lot about the verbal conjugations and nominal case system. I also know from Dr. Biltoo what sounds in "Engineer" are allowed in word final (coda) position according to strict phonological rules. There are also two distinctive ingressive labio-velars in the language (/qwh/ and /gwh/). If either of these had been properly spoken in the phone message, it would certainly signify Dr. Biltoo's involvement in the recording. Sadly, neither is.

@Mizere; Sukkal has contributed some wonderful information to the site about engineer language, and yes Chris does verify the legitimacy of such claims before allowing it to be posted. :) Perhaps you should read Sukkal's thread : Click-->What David actually said to the Engineer. Mystery Revealed.

Has anyone else heard anything from San Diego Comic Con? So far all I could see is a bunch of merchandise, action figures and some people dressed as recruiters drumming up interest in the movie. From the sites i've seen they were recruiting up until yesterday - so... was anything announced? also, on the projectprometheus site the third viral video is still locked. I really liked Prometheus but i'm starting to get a bit fed up of the mystery now lol! - if this all ends up to be a ploy to just get people to buy the DVD and Blu Ray (which i'll do anyway) i'll feel a little bit let down.

MemberOvomorphJul-15-2012 3:49 PM
Good point @sukkal - and on the plus side - Prometheus is still generating activity and interest rather than just fizzling out which is really promising :) - even if the DVD or Blu Ray doesn't have much extra, I think that chances are with all the interest and money that the movie has made so far there just might be a sequal - even if it is in a few years time. (Here's hoping for an extnded cut in the meantime though if not more). I have realised though that the date of the New York Comic Con also coinsides with the 10 11 12 date (NY Comic Con starts 11th October 2012) - so maybe it all references to that date? An extended (better) cut would be great if no sequal for now though lol.

Maybe there is a two part Comic Con event - San Diego to register and NY on 10 11 12 for more info?

@cybershandy — LOL! I'm sure that FOX doesn't think of it as a "ploy". It's just marketing activity to them. It seems that everything is pointing towards the middle of October of this year. I expect (I say that hopefully) there will be a different (= better) cut of the film that will ask MORE questions, which I expect to be a bit MORE interesting than the mysteries we have so far. I have no idea if it will be only on DVD or if there will be a theatrical release as well. It will be a "product" one way or the other. I am encouraged that the iconography they chose to go with at SDCC and on the related phone message was that of an Engineer—as opposed to the Deacon or rubber hammerpedes, etc. I choose to believe still a this point that that is a sign that we'll get a *product* in October that will please me MORE than the initial theatrical release. However, I'm also quite prepared for disappointment. I won't be removing my helmet prematurely...
