Ive always loved that scene from alien, the one with ashs android head on the floor. That fantastic and chilling speech, 'I can't lie about your chances....but you do have my sympathy' classic!!!!
"how do you feel?"-" great, next stupid question"

well, I disagree, the, "We made you because we could," moment was 'very poignant'. :)

"We made you because we could," Poignant from Halloway, not from Alien.

Now, let me get this straight... Ash was taken out by the crew of Nostromo. He wasn't any longer able to interfere with them, or preserve the alien for analysis etc. From his acknowledged disadvantage (being helpless at that point) he chides the remaining crew. OK David gets taken out the very same way, by the very being that he has studied and prepared to meet. The crew of the Prometheus (hidden agendas not withstanding) were deliberately seeking these beings- as in, they were not diverted, nor had an android planted secretly, nor had a "Davids eyes only" set of instructions in the otherwise non-interfacing computer. But instead of chiding Shaw, he warns her and later helps her- even though he states that her new found direction is illogical. Poignant & classic (differences?) indeed! Holloway's Answer: "because we could" was IMHO a drunken and condescending remark. It delivered none of the classic reasons to create an android. His fate, at the hands (finger) of David was very poignant.

"..His fate, at the hands (finger) of David was very poignant..." This was a deliberate act of David,,putting a crew member at risk. And if and wehen other crew members discover this deed they would really have a problem, Could the rest of the mission be accomplished without David? If known would the other crew members taken out David to protect themselves? Was this a design by Wayland to deliberately place Davisd on the ship so that David could not be destroyed by Crew memebers,,because the android was Integral to the fiunctioning of the ship and maintaing the humans/crew heath?

I just got home from working all night and found this discussion began using the word classic, then in response poignant was used. So, I guess that my entry here was a bit random... Ash's presence on the Nostromo was a secret, as were his instructions- "Science officer eyes only". The whole encounter was staged by the "Company" and the expendable crew were in the dark about everything. Ash was integral to the companies objective, but when he was outed- it was too late for the remaining crew to save themselves. The company's objective would be lost, but at the same time- so would the lives of the (then) remaining crew. David's presence on the Prometheus wasn't a secret, but it would seem that almost all of his motives were. The crew of Prometheus was directly engaged in finding what they were looking for, but the duplicitous Weyland & Co. had a secret and ulterior motive. So again; just like Ash and the Nostromo, the crew of Prometheus was in the dark. It is these two similar premises that I find to be both poignant and classic- to use the words of FreePlanet and pulserifle187.

Ash's head was on a table when he said those lines, not on the floor. ahahah, being picky here.

@David 1 Ash's head was on a table when he said those lines, not on the floor. Did you notice that the tables were turned in Prometheus? In Alien, the disembodied head of Ash is asked if he can hear. After a delay and bit of gurgling he replies "Yes. I can hear you." In Prometheus, the disembodied head of David asks Shaw if she can hear him. After a delay and a moment's reflection she replies (In close-up) "Yes. I can hear you."

The time lines at work here are as interesting as they are in the Terminator series of films... But one constant throughout is the fact that Weyland Industries (WI) is "at the helm" of all things Alien -- and all things Engineer as well. While it seems unlikely that WI inserted a clandestined Ash onto the Nostromo to retrieve what they thought would be Cuddles for the weapons division (remember, Ash "admires" its purity; its matching survival skills and hostility), it seems more likely that WI was well aware of what we know to be the xeno/alien -- which, since everyone from the Prometheus is either dead or unaware of even the Deacon (re-enter Vickers, perhaps?) -- means the xeno MUST be in one of the sequels to Pro'. Further, it seems clear that the xenos obtain the built-in combat suit or protective covering that Bob exhibited; perhaps from further couplings of the Deacon, since s/he showed no signs of same when it was born. This, too, adds to the likelihood of the xeno's role in succeeding films. So, I say "LET'S GET FILMING!"

"..perhaps from further couplings of the Deacon,.." To fill in the gaps from the Deacon to a Xeno could the couplings be with DNA from a yet unseen being?...a natural evolvement with Engineers or humans?

Well, there was quite a change in development from Cuddles to Deacon, but I'd say the Deacon has to couple with at least one more Engineer, until it acquires the "suit." THEN, it seems to me the last piece of the puzzle (if one is necessary, is to couple with a human, though Kane MAY be the first human to suffer such a fate. One thing's for sure, the xeno doesn't "morph" much -- if at all -- after facehugging SEVERAL humans in Aliens. AND I might add that the queen in both Aliens and AVP appear the same... In other words, the morphing appears to stop at or after Kane.

I saw a lot of Ash in David. Both same or similar generations and both manipulative bastards. But, it's all in the programming. They're simply tools (no pun intended) and extensions of the Company's sick philosophies. But yes! Ash's line was chilling!!! I'll never forget the first time I heard it.
