Prometheus's short screen writing Character presentation and function

Sadly, one of the less achieved character momentum in Prometheus is the Character presentation and function to some of the characters that have screen time. Some of them seem irrelevant, others too odd to be there at all. Putting the cannon fodder matter aside, here is one example of a movie I consider to be of a good screen writing Character presentation and overall function: Star Trek – the motion picture I first saw this movie at a very tender age and only later I realized there used to be a tv series on which this movie was based. Nevertheless, I saw it multiple times – countless, if you will – and even after watching the tv series, this particular movie is still one of my favorites, not only for the story in it, the FXs and music score but also because of the way the characters are presented. You really don’t need to watch the tv series to understand who the characters are and their functions. They present themselves through meaningful dialogues and even their attitudes and bodily positioning. All that is indeed relevant to the plot is shown through attitude and personal will. Nothing is left to chance. Not even the characters that are bound to have a rather gruesome demise. I’m no “treky” in the sense that I don’t adore the Star Trek Universe. Just that movie in particular for the above mentioned various reasons. In short, Prometheus lacks that sort of Character Presentation to some degree.

Hm. Well, I'll tell you what: I have been silently wondering for quite a while if something like this would come up. I am not a, "Trekkie", either - I can take it or leave it - but the question has crossed my mind on several occasions, now, whether several things about Prometheus would ever have passed Star Trek Quality Control, even on their very worst day... To be quite honest, this film has actually caused me to have something of a new respect for the depth and precision in the execution of the Star Trek Universe, the careful attention to Character, the cohesive and convincing handling of even what should be the most laughably Sci-fi of Sci-Fi concepts - and a lot more besides. Yes, the quality varies, but, essentially, to me: those people surely do know how to execute the spinning of a yarn.

Maybe the actors should have rehearsed together for a few months.

It wasn't an actor problem. It was a script, direction and editing problem.

"..They present themselves through meaningful dialogues and even their attitudes and bodily positioning.." In this vein..the best charactor develoment was the USS Enterprise, To me the whole movie was presented to feature, the starship. It was long movie and when the crew finally started on their journey,,well that was when the movie began...after the drydock sequence.. Prometheus featured the Engineers...and variouss aliens....then the Charactors. To the 'Alien' movie storyline was secondary..as you could follow the themes..as presented through the charactors without prior knowledge,, It was sort of being there with the crew(well Shaw at least) and tagging along..

We call ourselves Trekkers... Gene Roddenberry originally created Star Trek to be about people. The medium was outer space. In the end of any Star Trek series (Five that I know of, and don't remember how many feature films) people are the subject of the scripts. Even people employed in the numerous productions have their names as part of the story, such as the engineering "Jeffries Tubes" named after Matt Jeffries, the original series' set designer. Trekkers also know what an Okudagram is... If Ridley Scott had anywhere near the same "Quality Control" as the Star Trek franchise, it would have had a vastly more consistent plot. But because there isn't an Alien Bible (as there is for Star Trek) Lindelof was able to totally mess up Spaiht's script. I think Sir Ridley was unfortunately taken by the additional writer's noted themes that incorporate open-ended story telling. I don't think Sir Ridley started out with his very own grounded, conclusive and decisive story, but instead- only an idea. Spaiht's script (evidently?) was too conclusive, and too connected literally to Alien. For myself, I did care about the Space Jockey. I did care about how the crew of the Nostromo would deal with the xenomorph, and hoped that they would be more successful than the Space Jockey. And I certainly cared more about the crew of the Nostromo way more than those of Prometheus. The Nostromo crew were ordinary people in an unfortunate situation. The Prometheus crew were supposed to be professionals prepared to deal with what they were looking for- despite hidden agendas. And they screwed everything up worse than the ill-prepared Nostromo crew- although the survivor list was just as short when you count the cat. Alien was more like Star Trek in it's regard for people. Prometheus blew it in so many ways compared to either.

allinamberclad: Indeed. Those people at least had some respect towards the viewer than nowadays Hollywood, and didn't treat them as a dumb lot. AlienAge11: They sure could have had a lot more of a "voice" on the matter and ask all sorts of questions. Some actors can be rather "I want it my way", but there are a bunch of others who actually are true professionals and respected for their opinions, and that's the idea I have of Fassbender. nysalor: That's what I said. Indy John: It was about the USS Enterprise in a broader sense, but Cap. Kirk's presentation at the start of the movie - when we get to know that he is going to beg to have his ship back - and the demise of the vulcan he encounters there is a very good example on how to give a solid reason for those characters to be there at the first place. aircraftfixer: Forgive me for using a wrong expression, mate. "Trekkers" will be. And you are absolutely right in all acounts. More respect for the viewers would be nice.
