engineer heart beat

any other theories on what the signal was?

No no it was a ping that occurred hourly

"Is it dead this time?" "I dunno, poke it with this stick and see."

It was an hourly 'ping'? first I heard of that.
I also figured that it was heartbeat.,,,or certainly something from the sleeping Engineer.
Let me ask this..would the senser pick up a human heartbeat?..Just what is that identifys a lifeform?
Is the electrical energy of a 'Hratbeat' of something else?

I assumed that the heartbeat would be the entire sleep pod and Bob (biomechanl and all that, it was all plugged into him all over his body). I can't figure how the "Pup" (HOOOOWWWLL) read past the door!
I think Cypher's Hammerpede theory can stop me going mad (there are 2 afterall, but the hourly ping then upsets my brain)
I can only see a slowed heartbeat, shared withe the stasis pod, but that means the entire room is active and just "ticking over"! It activated quick enough for a piece of machinery that we assume had not been used for 2 thousand yrs or so!

I don't think it was because the pup did not yet have access to that area of the ship, so it has to have been either a Hammerpede or there was something else in there that we didn't see at all...............................

it picked up the signal every hour then it disappeared again. with someone in cryo sleep their heart slow right down (theoretically anyway) . just thought it may of picked up the " mirco changes in air density ' through the door.....

No it's a good theory but I don't think the pups worked that way, I'm not too sure anyone really knows what the significance of the hourly ping really was

Point of note: the pup was outside a door -- but that door led into another room that THEN led into the bridge of the ship where Bob lay resting. So though the writer(s) never address the actual capabilities (surprise, surprise) of the pups, I have to believe that they made it a TWO-ROOM difference to emphasize that it was likely NOT Bob's heart beat (and besides, I agree that the beat would be "slow-n-steady," so why only pick it up every hour?).

when the two scientist here in the area with the pile of dead engineers ,they were contacted by the captain of the ship . he said that he had picked up a signal " 1 click to the west of them" . then the scientist went back to the area with the canisters and the two hammerpedes. the signal was picked up before they came across the two hammerpedes.
i believe the pups were also designed to pick up life forms . the captain said that the pup had picked up a life form( the hourly ping) .with the motion detection devices in both alien and aliens i think its plausible the the pups have those applications.

The 'ping' came from the pup to Prometheus in response to detecting a life form. In a relatively quiet environment it's entirely possible that you could detect a heartbeat many metres away, especially so if the sound is conducted through solid material. Astronomers put certain instruments way way deep in the ground to minimise vibrations. Even then, they can be affected by road traffic miles and miles away.
