MemberOvomorphJul-29-2012 10:46 PM3D doesn't work for everybody. Personally, I would rather see a high quality 2D print any day!
Hollywood have jumped on the 3D bandwagon even though it's a far from perfect technology.
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent

MemberOvomorphJul-29-2012 10:57 PMIf it was done well, yes. Star Wars was suprisingly bad. I was shocked at how pop up book it looked. Hope the original trilogy gets a better treatment.
I may work for the company, but im really an OK guy.

MemberOvomorphJul-30-2012 1:54 AMthe 3D in Prometheus REALLY DIDN'T WORK for me - the slow shots were great - the fast-moving or action shots just FELL TO PIECES.
Literally. I had to look over the top of my glasses on more than one occassion.
2013 sci-fi horror novels 'Custodian' and 'Tandem' available from Amazon, B&N, iTunes etc...

MemberOvomorphJul-30-2012 2:03 AMmeh. I agree with zzplural. 3D is a garbage marketing gimmick that molests/undermines the integrity of the medium. I pray 3D dies on the vine. Save the money on developing the 3D technology and put it towards a 4k home viewing experience.

MemberOvomorphJul-30-2012 2:38 AMI enjoyed Prom better the second time around in 2D. It'll look superb
on Blu-Ray on my good ole' no nonsense 2D TV.

MemberOvomorphJul-30-2012 7:31 AMBlade Runner should be reconsidered for the 3D treatment re-release in tandem with the impending release of any given sequel in the near-future. Would be a great marketing campaign plus a good reason/excuse to see it: 'The Final Cut' one last time in the cinema. Blade Runner would lend itself well, I feel, to the medium.

MemberOvomorphJul-30-2012 8:26 AMYes, they should do Alien in 3D so we can listen to the Alien fanboys whinge even more. No wait... :p

MemberOvomorphJul-30-2012 9:04 AMWow, suprised to hear some thought the 3D in Prometheus sucked. In IMAX it was flawless. Crystal clear with no blurring. I'm not a 3D nut, but it was really good. My town has a new IMAX, i wonder if it could have been an issue with certain theaters.
I may work for the company, but im really an OK guy.

MemberOvomorphJul-30-2012 10:02 AMYer I think allot of 3D is actually at half rez - because of the 2 fields one for each eye - so I do actually prefer 2D due to is crispness but I guess 3D will get better...And yes IMAX is rolling out new screens at teh mo I heard one has just been put in London...

MemberOvomorphJul-30-2012 12:09 PMMy husband thinks 3D is the only way to see a movie. I think it isn't worth it if the 3D effects were added after the fact rather than the movie actually being shot in 3D. I still can't tell the difference between Real 3D and IMAX, tbh.

MemberOvomorphJul-30-2012 5:52 PMI saw 'Prometheus' at the start of June in the IMAX, London. It is the first film I have ever seen in 3D and the only time so far that I have been in an IMAX cinema. I have to say, I hated the 3D effect. It gave me something of a headache but added - for me - nothing of value to the visual experience. On the contrary, it rather cheapened it to my eyes. The 3D had the bizarre and ironic effect of making everything seem flatter because it appeared to divide the image into distinct planes: the foreground, the middle-ground, the background. But the very fact of that separation between the planes just made many individual details appear flat in a way that they simply would not have done in a 2D print. An ironic outcome of the 3D 'magic', I shall grant you, but there it is.
Perhaps it is just my crazy eyes; perhaps it is simply a matter of taste; perhaps the screen I saw it on was somehow substandard. I know that the London IMAX has had a new screen put in since then (as mentioned by Crabfart, above). But I am personally more than happy with 2D and have no desire to see any more movies in 3D.

MemberOvomorphJul-30-2012 11:22 PMI enjoyed Prometheus in 3D because it wasn't really overused and put you right there with the characters.I really appreciated the Lawrence of Arabia 3D.That was done really well.Funny..a 3D movie with a 3D movie in it :)
I'd appreciate Alien in "good" 3D like Prometheus was just to get into it more...even though, yes,I find 3D can be distracting from the storyline :)

MemberOvomorphJul-31-2012 4:13 AM@djrees56: Yes, I'll admit the 'Lawrence of Arabia' bit made me smile too.
But as regards converting 'Alien' to 3D, I personally can't see the point. I am no connoisseur of the technology, as 'Prometheus' is the only film I have seen in this form, but it seems to my eyes a pitiful gimmick. If anyone wants to experience their drama in real 3D, then I would suggest that they go to the theatre instead!
However, tampering with old films - whether it is adding colour to Laurel & Hardy or the compulsive revisions of 'Star Wars' that George Lucas undertakes every few years - merely serves to remind us how good the original was.

MemberOvomorphJul-31-2012 8:43 AM@djrees56: Me too, Prometheus made a good use of 3D. It wasn't distracting.
Have you heard of phoenix asteroids?

MemberOvomorphJul-31-2012 2:43 PMI loved Prometheus in both IMAX and standard 3D. Tron was spectacular in 3D and the Avengers was really good. That said leave the classics alone. No desire to see a retro 3D movie other than Finding Nemo. Alien, Star Wars all the rest are perfect the way they are IMO.
