I think you have something with the William Potter match reference. One of the earliest types of match was patented as a [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Match]Promethean match[/url]. As to why Scott chose this kind of mythology... well the main reason is because he wanted to extend the scope to something way beyond the ooh-I'm-so-scared-alien-fighting genre.
