MemberFacehuggerAug-21-2012 7:21 AMThis seems to be a theme in Prometheus.
-Head Statue (Father)
-David's head (Son)
-Engineer head (Holy Spirit)
The head statue almost seems to represent God because it appears to be some sort of idol for worship. David is the Son that Weyland never had, and the Engineer who was decapitated is even shown running as a hologram as if some sort of holy spirit.

Is this representative of some Unholy Trinity of death and destruction?

MemberOvomorphAug-21-2012 7:40 AMyes... It's all about heads.
From the "anti-christ" theory to the "unholy trinity" theory; one gets to read about everything in this Forum.
It's amazing how wild imagination flows here. Wait until peeps start to ponder how the sequel is gonna be and we will be revisited by the ghosts of
P R O T E U S and F E T U S again.
Can't wait for that one to happen again. muahahahah.

MemberOvomorphAug-21-2012 8:33 AMWith so many (but not all) event portrayals being unfounded by additional story details, just about anything could be determined to be plausible in this film.
A clever observation none the less. I wonder where this idea could (or will) lead.

MemberOvomorphAug-21-2012 10:14 AMTheres a lot of heads occuring in mythology all over the world and in human history, the most obvious on being the statues on easter island.

MemberOvomorphAug-21-2012 10:17 AMHmmm, coincidence, probably. It's nothing like so blatant as the relentless reference to eyes that you get in Blade Runner.
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent

Statue, helmet/head, head. I didn't read too much into it. Still don't. :)

I don't know... decapitations are a pretty iconic image of death. And there's no way that Elisabeth being barren and suddenly having a baby is a coincidence, that along with all the references to Christmas and "our maker," so I wouldn't put it past them. Not to mention the LV-223 (Leviticus 22:3). That's no coincidence...

Then you're probably watching the wrong kind of movie! ;)

MemberOvomorphAug-21-2012 11:56 PMCool concept. I wonder if the symbolism was supposed to go this deep. Speaking of heads, it's odd the Engineers would wear a helmet that is so hard to see out of (seemingly) or so unlike the features of their own heads. It makes me think of the line that David said to Holloway to defend why he wore a helmet when he really didn't need to.
"I was designed like this because YOU people are more comfortable interacting with your own kind", David says. Are the Engineers suits designed to make another (more advanced, or master species) more comfortable??
Here are some things that may be related to the head symbolism:
Viral video: Peter Weyland (has a big head) Notice his name is PETER.
Big statue head.
Engineer head. (has head inside head!)
Dead Engineers head explodes.
Snake grows back head.
David gets his head ripped off.
Weyland, head of the company. Dies. By his son's head.
Xeno has a big head.
On the one hand Ridley is giving us subtle Christian symbolism and at the same time feeding the subconscious with this Freudian concept that it's really all about sex and spreading your seed.

Nice idea! Lines like that are probably not there by accident, so you very well could be on to something..

I'm sure even many of those who experienced it still struggle to accept that it can really have happened.

MemberOvomorphAug-22-2012 9:52 AMBut seriously, the elephant helmet is weird. Probably just a cop-out because it's too hard to make movies with giant talking elephants, but would love to be wrong on this one...

MemberOvomorphAug-26-2012 3:30 PM@tjvanhawk: I wonder, not knowing much about evolutionary biology, if there is a counter-balancing symbolism in the reptilian imagery along side the elephantine. The reptilian is commonly viewed as the more visceral and reactive, whereas the elephantine - at least in my mind, evokes the dominative, and conscientious nurture. The appearance of such in the Engineers' technology may be coincidental to the specific applications. The "accidental/volatile bio-weapon", and the "life-support mask", have their respective connotations in this light. Technology is evolutionary, after all.
Scott calls the Engineers "aggressive" here:
http://www.movies.com/movie-news/ridley-scott-prometheus-interview/8232
but the opening sacrifice scene is so contradictory to that, it makes me think he is simply speaking from the supposed perspective of the as-of-yet not-fully-informed observer, in order to encourage that thought without being dishonest, setting up a plot twist of some sort.
It makes me think of devolution, in that the opening scene compared to the Weyland/David/Engineer dialogue-and-attack scene could be pointing to the disintegration of the Engineer culture. All they wore were robes in the first scene, then highly integrative and complex bio-mech suits in the awakening scene.
Then again, if there's anything to the elephantine/reptilian dichotomy, the postulate voiced elsewhere in fan forums of warring factions would make sense in an evolutional/social divergence-parallel. That dichotomy wouldn't have to be a 1:1 ideal-to-subgroup distribution, either. The more aggressive types might embrace all such elemental "truths", while denying any inherent and adhesive value - nihilistically impetuous and intrepid, even reactionary and exacting, and I'll get into why in a moment. The more benevolent types may be more singular and deliberate in mind, not rejecting any of these rudiments, but taking a more permissive and expressive stance, seeing loss and pain as unavoidable and immaterial.
It just occurs to me that the whole reason for the appearance of the xeno (obviously well-established by the temple murals) might have come from a desire and effort to avoid the pain and loss to which the benevolent faction would obviously have been resigned. Fearful, yet optimistic objectors might have lost their way trying to follow an idea - that there is another way. So in a universe that is being filled with explosive and inevitably expansive life by a culture of shared origin with which they disagree, they have come up with a defense that threatens their own existence.
They may simply be/have been forced to face facts, and accept sacrifice, one way or another, as part of life. So the analogy could come together, and I definitely see the relevance - politically, economically, religiously, etc.
Either some element of the Engineer culture(s) still exists, or the team woke up and killed the last one, as their own machinations (even humans, indirectly) were their downfall. Then again, if there is still any surviving element, we may see it's final hours in this sequel...

MemberOvomorphAug-26-2012 3:39 PMNow I'm remembering the flute-code scene, as well. The expressions on the Engineers' faces in the hologram were very placid. It adds complexity to the warring factions idea. The fact that most humans - even at their most violent have, or have had, some consonant qualities.

MemberOvomorphAug-26-2012 4:17 PMSomething else that comes to mind:
I wrote here:
http://www.prometheus-movie.com/community/forums/topic/9612
about female genetic material and a possible effort to reconstitute a long-lost (result of techno-ambition?) procreation-viable gender.
I was browsing other discussions, and saw someone mention a desire to see female/"queen" engineers, which introduces the possibility of an even more fundamental patristic/matristic dichotomy in warring factions. This could either give way to a vital philosophical debate on assumptions about gender roles, and whether there really are inherent and exclusive (nurturing/ambitious) traits assignable to each, or end up being muddled by a myopic agenda.
Can people express things that they've put much thought into without offending those who do neither?

MemberOvomorphAug-26-2012 4:40 PM@Patient Leech: Sorry to totally derail this thread. Back to your original point.
When it comes to such basic symbolism, the observer pretty much has carte blanche. Keeping it consistent is the challenge.
The correlation between decapitation and the Christian doctrines you mention is somewhat striking. The fact that (contrary to popular opinion) the ideas in Christianity are largely contradictory to it's claimed origin - Judaism, is comparable to the separation of the apex of thought and intent from the body of practice. Add to that the fact that it is admitted, then convoluted with erroneous history and acrobatic theology veiled in superstition, and wrapped up in dismissive rhetoric, and you have a real horse-mounted, flaming pumpkin-hurling menace to reason.
Then there's the confusion of theory being commonly contrasted against practice, as per the adage - "It sounds good in theory...", which just demonstrates a lack of understanding of theory. There's a great deal of potential to point out the subtlety of myth and misinformation. I hope it's capitalized upon.

MemberOvomorphJan-16-2013 7:30 AM-Engineer head (Holy Spirit) I think more attention should be given to 'Sparky' the Engineer head in the lab getting electrically juiced up. Trick the nervous system it's alive was mentioned.
Maybe there is more to this brief instant of actual Engineer movement, maybe it was a moment of awareness the Head percieved after the many centuries since his accident.
The nervouss system was in his head. His awareness , if only for a few moments , was enough to see the human, goo danger.
And just before his moment to sacrifice himself sent a message to the only other living engineer(that we know of) our sleeping Last Engineer of his findings.
THere was something about the head wincing, squirming a bit but also recognizing something was intruding in their Pyramid life and immediate action is in order to protect the dome/tunnel/goo/ and Juggernaiuts

MemberOvomorphJan-16-2013 7:34 AMIt occurred to me that if the Decapitated head was not Dead when the door closed on him he could have acted like david did in a similar situation.
The running enginners must have been close by to see and hear the door closing severing the head from the running Engineer's body.
Could he not have called out to his running friends to at least pick him up and be carried to a safer place,
The separating of heads by the runing Engineer and David could somehow be connected in the storyline.
