AdminEngineerAug-28-2012 3:01 PMOkay, so after weeks of people requesting this feature be added to the forums, I have finally gone ahead and enabled the [b]SIGNATURES[/b] feature. For those unfamiliar, a "Signature" on a forum is like your avatar, it's an expression of yourself in text/graphic form which appears at the foot of each one of your posts.
They allow you to advertise a thread of yours or record your favorite quotes, or show off some artistic talent and post a graphical banner you made.
The reason why "Sigs" were not enabled before were because I found they detracted from the posts people made. But many of you wished we had them, so I've given in and enabled the feature under a few conditions. Please review the rules regarding Signatures below:
1. Maximum of 200 character limit for all Sigs.
2. Only 1 Image is permitted in your sig, no more than 1.
3. If you choose to post an image, it MUST be UNDER 450 x 100 pixels in size.
4. Images may NOT be an animated GIF image.
5. Any links you post must abide by the general forum rules.
6. Any content posted in your sig must abide by the rules and conduct of this network.
Some common uses of Sigs in a forum:
1. Link to your favorite thread in the forums, or a topic you created and want to advertise.
2. Post your favorite movie quote from your favorite movies.
3. Add a unique graphic banner/badge with info about your account here on the forums, to further "personalize" your profile.
What we allow in terms of advertising:
1. You MAY advertise your fan site/twitter/facebook page by posting a text link or ad banner in your signature so long as it abides by the forum rules and does not link to any sites we deem inappropriate.
Signatures accept BBcode, not html. So, the same as you post in a forum post is how you'll post your signature.
To edit your signature go to [i]Your Profile > Edit My Profile[/i].
Staff reserve the right to edit your signature if it violates any of our policies and rules.

I also agree with David1 about the 'smiley' or 'sad' characters in the toolbar.

I know everyone is really excited about this new feature and I don't want to come across as unappreciative or aggrieveing. I'm aware that it involves a lot of work and maintenance and is done with the best of intentions, which I really do appreciate.
But do we really need banners plus signatures in addition to animated profile pictures? First of all, I believe it will slow down the forum unnecessarily, will make lenghty threads even longer and harder to follow, where previously it was much more of a fluent reading. What I always liked about this site was its minimalistic approach, focussing on content rather than packaging, which also made it stand out from many other forums out there. Some of those are very hard to read with all the flickering and buzzing going on.
Maybe it's just me but I don't think the forum lacks of colourfulness and diversity since most people have been very inventive when choosing their animated profile pictures, of which many have created a personalised history and their own little funny stories, something I also always liked about this community.
However, I was told that there might be restrictions such as banners cannot be uploaded as animated gif's, which will hopefully make it a little bit less distractive.
Just a thought I wanted to put out there and open up for discussion.
