The end being the corporation getting their hands on the black goo. Think about it, do you really think 100andsomething, business baron Peter Weyland would go on a two year expedition to explore theories made about cave paintings? He probably was meaning to ask the Engineer how to harness the goo before it decapitated David and killed him. With a weapon like that in their possession, no one, not even the armed forces could take them down. They would be the sole designer, producer and manufacturer of everything. This attempt obviously fails, as is their second with the crew of the Nostromo.
I would think this much should be obvious by now.

MemberTrilobiteAug-29-2012 9:54 AMThe conspiracy is that W-Y knew that there was an Engineer craft on LV-426 carrying a cargo of deadly but genetically perfect bio-weapons - Xenomorph eggs, how they come they know this has yet to be confirmed but thanks to Prometheus we can deduce that they attained this knowledge because of their contact with the Engineer race.

It was pretty obvious no one knew what they would find there, but Weyland, Shaw and Holloway made their journey to find humanity's Creators.
Weyland was also fond of that idea to the point of investing lots of money on a state of the art Ship and go there himself to ask the Creators to fix him from dying.
Weyland states himself that he's kicking the bucket in about 2 days [hence him only being awoken when the last Engineer is discovered by David, to conserve his last moments of life in order to ask the Engineer to give him more life Blade Runner style].
So, to that point, Weyland Industries and Yutani had no knowledge at all of the black goo and what not.

Well, look at it this way: Weyland is dying. He hears about Shaw's findings regarding star systems and giants that created humanity. Finances the trip to go there in person to ask for more life.
If I had the money I guess I'd do the same... I think...

MemberOvomorphAug-29-2012 1:19 PMHello W7 ! As David 1 explain, nothing could ever proove that the Corps could know anything about Xeno or else. In Alien (regarding Prometheus), they only know that an expedition just disapeared near LV 223 Coord.
The simple question could be why a so simple background ? I would subjest that it is only because the actual movie makers do no like deep background... But for that comment, it is only my own opinion.
About the fact Peter Weyland, after 50 years of care and protection, decided to go on a so distant planet, with only fiew mercs to take care of him. I have a quick answer about that fact, just it is a short cut to introduce Paradise. It is stupid, not logic at all and so cheap !
(sorry about the faults)

This maybe just me, but I got the impression that Weyland already knew about the engineer before they arrived on LV223. Whether that's to do with the way the film was edited I'm not sure.
