MemberOvomorphSep-16-2012 12:38 PMLooks like Tom Rothman, CEO of Fox film divisions is being outed.
This is the guy who publicly stated "Not one frame of Prometheus will be cut." It is well known in insider circles, the version we all saw in theaters was the "PG-13" cut of the film which got rated at R in the USA anyways. Not only was most of the film cut, but we weren't even given the "R" version either.
This man is also the one responsible for recommending Lindelof to Scott. It is well known that Scott doesnt actually keep up with the actual current talent and uses an assistant who just keeps tabs on who is "hot" at the moment.
Its also been recently made known that the Producers are looking for writers for Prometheus 2 which do not include Spaights or Lindelof.
This can mean a few things.....
1. Lindelof screwed the pooch and Fox knows it.
2. There is no storyline even mapped out at all and they make it up as they go, which puts the whole "new saga" stance as false.
3. Prometheus was not made as part 1 of a new universe/canon and was just touted as such because they knew it was an empty movie.
4. There are no answers, atleast from Lindelof. He didnt write it to have answers and just masks this hollow shell with "intrigue, ambiguity, and deliberate vagueness"

MemberOvomorphSep-16-2012 1:18 PMVery true, we now know Lidelofs out of the game and he left the story sort of hanging. Yes i haven't heard fox clarify whether or not Prometheus is canon or not which seems a bit awkward.

MemberXenomorphSep-16-2012 1:39 PMDoes this mean Ridley was coerced into asking Lindelof to re write the Spaihts scripts ?
Or was it ridleys own idea ?

MemberFacehuggerSep-16-2012 2:50 PMIMO, and I don’t for one minute expect everyone to agree with me, but it is just my opinion and nothing more.
I think Alien and Prometheus are the same film. The only big difference is how each crew has discovered a Juggernaut and alien life. I think Prometheus is essentially a remake of Alien, but with a background that Scott may have wanted in the first place in order to set up a second film exploring the Space Jockeys. We know Scott has wanted to distance himself from the Alien franchise and create a whole new viewpoint.
I do believe that a second film, and I’ll be amazed if Paradise can achieve this, will work as a stand alone film that allows both Alien and Prometheus to act as minor introductions into a completely different alien universe.
Ultimately, I think Prometheus has been a bit of a test bed to see how things go. Ridley will have known about potential changes in Fox, as someone like him with his experience of the film industry will be extremely well informed in the areas where it matters, i.e. those controlling the purse strings.

MemberOvomorphSep-16-2012 3:09 PMBatchpool: I agree with you, it's essentially Alien with bits from the original script added. This is in no way a criticism. I see it as a fresh start for a new story. I've felt part of the problem for some people is that Prometheus kind of makes the Alien films the side story about one aspect of a bigger (Prometheus) picture. :D

MemberOvomorphSep-16-2012 7:30 PM@Batchpool + Major Noob: Without wanting to call Prometheus an ALIEN remake, I still think both of you have a point there. ALIEN was a successful horror flick in space, but it didn't have the depth either Scott wanted to have read into it later, or Dan O' Bannon and Giger wanted to have in it in the first place. At least not as much depth as compared to what Prometheus and its viral campaign have delivered so far.
I'm excited and curious to see what's on the horizon and hopefully we were not wrong on this one...

MemberOvomorphSep-17-2012 7:52 PMGalzu,
As far as "answers", Ridley and Lindelof said in some of the interviews that they know the answers already, they knew it when writing the script, but decided on not telling it yet.
I think they advertised the movie as a "part 1" in a new series just to try to prepare us that it is Not Like Alien. But the ones who didnt believe that, got kinda disappointed.
