Engineer Prototype - Model GAJ84
MemberOvomorphSep-27-2012 5:27 AMWith another deleted scene still being released recently, I think it is safe to say the Engineers definitely have some sort of hierarchy/order amongst their race. My point being, the engineer who drinks the black goo from the cup seems to be at the bottom of the ladder so to speak, then we have the elders, now we have this new pic of what I will call the "Upper Elder" Who appears to be much older than the other elders, a "King" perhaps?
It really got me thinking about the line Vickers says to Weyland,
"A king has his reign, and then he dies"
It could just be coincidence and my mind making to much out of it but it kinda fits.
Thoughts & comments peeps.

@Engineer Prototype - Model GAJ84; I would have thought the opposite, that a special chosen few would be sacrificed and it would be an honor. Look how the elder bows as well. No one would bow to something that wasn't special. I always imagined it to be a special life giving ceremony, so only the best genetic examples of the race would be chosen. Seed the planets with the best quality DNA possible.

MemberOvomorphSep-27-2012 8:17 AMIt's a bit premature to say that the 'sacrificial' Engineer "seems to be at the bottom of the ladder". It might be a great honour, for all we know.
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent

MemberOvomorphSep-27-2012 10:29 AMDie in pain, and be happy for that, for a billion years from now something might come from it...
Honor....
From a space faring species able to high biotech accomplishments that would be a frightening thing...
The punishment scenario is a bit less frightening, if still cruel.
And I am always happy to hear this redesigning idea...but we need to wait and see what will really come from that...

MemberDeaconSep-27-2012 12:06 PMThe statement about the release of that image is as follows..
"This opening sequence, with the presence of many Engineers, was cut from the film to further enhance the mystery of our creators. Throughout the film, the filmmakers wished to enable both the Prometheus crew and the audience to experience parallel levels of mystery"
This is with why i thought it was cut and also what someone on the production staff had said shortly after.
That was that the scene was cut because as Ridley will be going to visit and explore the Engineers Culture and Elders when Shaw travels to the Home World, they decided to remove the scene so as to keep some Mystery about the Engineers for the sequel.
Yes some elements may be re-designed but i would not get any hopes for major changes, and i would also bet that the Full Sacrificial Scene would be included in Prometheus 2 as another flash back... maybe in response to when Shaw asks why we was created.
Note that Ridley said that he based the scene on Ritual Sacrifices in Ancient Cultures like Mayan and Aztecs in which some chosen person would be treated as a Prince for a Year and then Sacrificed to the Gods. This would tie in with the Trailer when Vickers "a king as his rein" was added with the scene of the Engineer looking at his hand as the goo starts to break him down.
Thus maybe a hint that this Engineer is treated as a King for a while before he then has to perform his Sacrifice.
This close up of this new Elder is also younger than the other two Elder close ups that we have already seen.

Here is the 3 main Elders.
In this shot is the new image released the other day as in OP and also this guy.

MemberOvomorphSep-27-2012 6:18 PMHi BigDave -
[(Ridley based the scene on Ritual Sacrifices in Ancient Cultures like Mayan and Aztecs in which some chosen person would be treated as a Prince for a Year and then Sacrificed to the Gods.)]
Seems to fit with all the movie-markers that are supposed to prove we inherited all our ancient culture from the engineers. He certainly is not behaving as if this is punishment or as a prisoner.
Im begining to wonder if this race sought genetic engineering to improve and while they achieved great levels of strength, health and intelligence, it somehow made them sterile. (Their apperance keeps making me think of white cloned lab rats) Too much cloning would eventually damage the DNA, thus it would make sense for them to use this method to repopulate worlds.
