As David8 said in the end, the question "why they want us dead?" is irrelevant.
"... and the sea will grant each man new hope, as sleep brings dreams of home." Christopher Columbus.

Hi Elaine, although it was clarified I think that had been chosen as a "sacrifice" to dissipate his DNA into the environment (the water in this case) that would then "kick start" the evolutionary process on Earth.

Hi Speedtouch, thanks for answering. Just watched the movie and haven't read much about it except that it was a prequel to Alien, Aliens (which I loved) .... so the beginning left me confused.
Hi geopap, not sure I see the point in visiting alien planet if they want humans dead and aren't going to spend time discussing?

Aliens are confusing. That's just the way they are. Heaven forbid if we actually met some real aliens, we'd probably die of culture shock, as well as being humbled by our lack of understanding.
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent

I believe the Engineer was an experiment on Earth (Isle of Skye). His robe reflects the usual attire of one involved in a mortal experiment. The craft left after they noticed the change in him. Probably telepathically. I don't think it was the same goo as found later because of the drastic destruction of the body and no creature was born from him.

The engineer sacrificed himself to create life. Don't worry about what planet it's on.
