I'd have to say it looks just like David. David knew how to open the door, and said oops when he did. When they all saw the head David's comment was "remarkably human" with a sarcastic tone, perhaps because it ironically is him.
I read a thread that speculated that the head and chamber are in worship of the creator of the stuff in the urns...somehow that is David.
Another speculation is that the engineers are time jumping through wormholes. that would mean there is no time, no million years, no 2000 years, no linear timeline. They could go anywhere they wanted whenever they wanted.
Therefore David and Whalen have interacted with the engineers in some other time and place. I thought the engineer when he looked at David and Whalen thought he recognized them a bit, and was a bit dumbfounded at what he was looking at.
The engineer in the beginning, if there was an actual timeline would have evolved and changed over the thousands, millions, billion years...hence no timeline.
Perhaps they are replanting their DNA to recreate themselves. Perhaps they destroyed themselves and are trying to recreate themselves in the timeline, hence the visits to old cultures, helping the old cultures along to become them.
Love to hear some thoughts on the metal head.....

Nothing more than a "remarkable" human resemblance.
There was no sarcasm in David's voice when he commented "remarkably human". He was simply stating a fact. If anything, there was an element of awe in his voice.
The story doesn't need time travel to make it work. My guess is that Ridley would regard that as being rather silly, like Back To The Future.

The engineers nose bone goes straight up to the forehead with no indentation and where the nose meets the brow bone actually protrudes. This is also the face found in renaissance drawings os greek gods.
I don't think David is in awe of humans.
I'm reading a lot about the engineers using earth as a breading ground for xenomorphs...as seen and experienced with the worms and the black goo, all they need is one drop in the ocean. They don't need a cargo hold of black goo bombs.
So time travel may be silly but lv426 is supposedly 2 milloin years old?
