MemberFacehuggerOct-24-2012 10:26 AMA very enjoyable watch. They give a great defense for the film. I don't necessarily agree with everything, but they supply some nice ideas. I personally still subscribe to the Space Christ theory (I don't think Ridley completely denied it, in fact I think in that very same interview he supported the idea. I think he meant it was just a "little too on the nose" to come right out and explicitly state. But he definitely meant to imply it). Anyway, enjoy...

MemberOvomorphOct-24-2012 10:42 AMIt defends the movie on secondary issues, not so much on the artistic issues which I mainly have with the movie.
My issues aren't about trivial things like "was Vickers a robot?" and "how do the pups fly?" (which was asked here not too long ago) but rather with confusing and disengaging story, mixed tone, and an overall loss of tension.
Regardless, isn't it a sign of trouble when so many people have to come out and defend the movie over so many trivial things?

MemberOvomorphOct-24-2012 10:58 AMNo. It's a sign that there are a lot of dumb people in the audience who have gotten used to generally dumbed-down movies and TV programming.
The above video is awesome and should be staple viewing before people ask dumb questions.
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent

MemberOvomorphOct-24-2012 11:04 AMHOLD ON!!! If (in this video) we were created to make xenos, did Engineer say to Weyland like "Why should you live forever since you are xeno food??" or something like that...

MemberOvomorphOct-24-2012 11:31 AM"..with confusing and disengaging story, mixed tone, and an overall loss of tension..."
After my only theatrical viewing of the movie,,that is exactly what i felt, It was a numb expereince..not really sure what to feel or think..but knowing mthat it was not enjoyable..
This month 'forced' my wife to watch the movie with me,,without any advanced knowledge,,other than what was on the DVD box..
She finished the movie and thought it was pretty good..asked a few questions,,caught of the plot holes/questions that are expressed at this site.....but all in all a pretty good experience,, She would even whatch it again...
What helped her(and me) was using the audio track that sort of narrarated each scene..between any dialog(no CC on this track.) almost like an audio book)
Looking back all of the flaws were still there..
I guess I can look past some of the flaws mentioned at the site,,,because the story was strong enough to want to seek out the film's explanation for the questions raised.
I have not check out the explanation mentioned here,,,but will seek it out. I am glad for the opportunity to ask answer and seek out more info about the movie..learn about the flaws..the confusing story line..and percieved loss of tension.
Time to enjoy another day off..

We all know what happened in Prometheus, but now we only know enough to want more!

MemberOvomorphOct-24-2012 4:10 PMNo Ridley didn't deny the space Jesus stuff directly. However, I have a feeling its still the Roman Empire they were mad at and the Jesus stuff won't be brought up completely. Maybe alluded to with some standing up against an Empire themes.
Ridley originally said Jesus would have been sent as an emissary to "curtail" the Roman Empire.
This is what Ridley said. By his own admission the Engineers wanted to cut short or diminish the Roman's reign by sending an emissary down to deal with the war mongering rulers who wanted to rule forever... would not give up their positions as Emperor until they were killed or overthrown. Stealing power in the Roman way as well as the Greek way... overthrowing the current ruler through betrayal, assassination, knocking them off the throne.
If the space Jesus stuff is still a part of the 2000 years ago stuff then they were always worried or mad about the Roman Empire if they sent Jesus to "curtail" it. They were most likely a little upset before they even sent Jesus.
This could tell us the Engineers don't like Empires or rulers that treat their subjects and colonies a certain way.
They become even more pissed off/worried about humanity's empire building and chaotic leaders after the Romans killed Jesus.

MemberOvomorphOct-25-2012 1:21 AMThe video was excellent, even something special as something fans made. I noticed one big thing I think they're wrong about. Xenomorphs didn't burst out of the engineers' chests, in the ones clumped against a wall. On at least one of the bodies, there is a hole inside its head and helmet; and I don't remember seeing any holes in their chests. Xenomorphs wouldn't clump "hosts" for themselves in such a way, either. They cocoon their prey, and separate them much more neatly. The thing they were running from, I believe, was yet another dangerous chemical or biological agent you could call a WMD. It probably was something airborne, which those who were running had seen cause another's head to explode earlier. The film doesn't show another body anywhere, but the whole ship hadn't been explored thoroughly. The head they brought back to the Prometheus exploded after they made it think it was still alive, so it was that engineer's death by decapitation that stopped its head from exploding.

MemberOvomorphOct-25-2012 2:13 AMI just finished reading "Aliens Original Sin” by Michael Jan Friedman and it brought up an interesting explanation/spinoff of the Xenomorph Engineer relationship.
Basically it boils down to the fact that the Engineers AKA: Pilots/Space Jockeys/Mala'kak are becoming incapable of reproduction. They know that the Xenomorph species are more than experts on the ways of mass reproduction even in the harshest conditions. So they deliberately create Xenos for bio-engineering reasons. It was said in the book that the Mala'kak do not want to create these Xenos from Mala'kak hosts so they are in need of humans...lots and lots of humans. Because of this, a symbiotic relationship (lol pun) was formed with a group of humans called Earthgov AKA Loki (I find that name curious now after reading interviews with Ridley Scott in which he refers to the Engineers as "Dark Archangels”)
From what I gathered, the relationship works like this: The Mala'kak have a number of planets that they claim as their own throughout the universe. They allow Earthgov(Loki) to temporarily harvest these planets for various valuable resources in exchange that Earthgov will eventually let the Mala'kak use the humans as hosts for Xenomorph breeding (unbeknownst to the humans obviously). Then the Mala'kak will “harvest” these herds of Xenos as DNA experiments that would ultimately end in the revitalization of the Mala'kak’s reproductive capabilities. It was also mentioned in the book that the Mala'kak actually tinker with their own DNA in hopes of gaining other benefits of the aliens themselves. Which is also the reason for the slight differences in the Xenos in this particular book. Personally I think this is why the Mala'kak on LV-223 has similar skin to the xenos.
This book also explained that the Nostromo was intentionally sent to LV-426 to bring back a xeno, however, Weyland Industries was not the group that discovered the distress beacon (It wasn’t really a distress beacon or a warning, it was a “Hey come get me message”). Weyland Industries was actually notified by Earthgov (Loki) of the existence of a crashed Juggernaut and sent the Nostromo to bring back a Xeno based on that communication. Obviously Earthgov was notified about it from the Mala'kak.
So yeah, who knows if this will fit into the whole Prometheus vision that Ridley has but I think it would be pretty damned cool if he did tie certain facts from the novels in the overall lore of Prometheus.
Anyhow, I know these spinoff books/novels aren’t "official" or anything, but they still offer very cool insight to the entire Alien/Prometheus Universe.
Thanks for reading!
