""36 hours", 1/2 billion miles" and "3% CO2 is fatal" - Did I miss something?"

When Vickers asks David how long they have been asleep he tell her years, months, days, and then say, "36 hours", so many minutes. Did they use a different clock? The calendar seemed the same with Christmas and New Year being reported. Just curious how you have more than 24 hours without bumping to another day. Also, the medical officer says that 3% CO2 is fatal in 2 minutes. That's not true. Humans can tolerate that much for a month at least; 4% for a week. Now, CO, that would be fatal in 2 minutes at 3%. I wonder if she meant CO because you would get that breathing through a tail pipe. And of course, as everyone knows, Vickers would not be outside our own solar system if she was only going 1/2 billion miles for a good time, but they had travelled almost 40 light-years to get where they were going. I've watched the other Alien movies; are these inside jokes or script errors? These seem like pretty big errors to slip by.

David is not supposed to lie to humans. In the last discussion I saw about the significance of David's '36 hours' comment, it was thought he was learning to be vague, & also to bend the truth, so as to avoid his protocols. He was not really lying, but....... It is like HAL in 2001 when he says checkmate to David. He is not really in checkmate, but no one doubts him because HAL does not lie to humans.

It's a Science FICTION film, therefor, NOT reality.

The poster was good though!

the lines by both vickers and david are not script errors (numerous reasons, but seeing as how the lines in question have been discussed to death, dont really want to dig into those). i have no idea regarding the CO2 issue.

Rock on Joey I'd just like to add that we see David capeable of sarcasm and irony, and certainly with Vickers. Seeing that scene again, I think thats where it comes from. She expects a precise answer, but has no real need of one, and he knows it. Her 1/2 billion miles remark is in the same category, it's just an off the cuff number. She's letting her guard down in that scene, bantering.

Don't touch it!

I prefer the outtake that's on the blu-ray: Vickers asks "how long?" David replies: "16 inches when fully erect; varies when relaxed".

The distance to LV-226 from Earth is specified in writing on the screen early in the movie, at 3.24 x 10-to-the-14th power kilometers, which is 324,000,000,000,000, or 324 trillion kilometers.

36 Hours?! That must be a stupid mistake.

I just thought the CO2 error had to be a script error, since she references a tailpipe and CO in that amount would be fatal in a couple minutes, but definitely not CO2. Lots of CO in exhaust. Either gas would still allow them to have gloves off on as Shaw does at the end; it looked like suit wrist cuffs formed good seal. As for David's 36 hours and Vickers' banter, good points for sure about their behavior/casual chat. I think the only other thing that struck me as odd was how carelessly they breached protocol like taking helmets off, messing with overgrown worms, taking computer's word that head was pathogen-free, etc. Enjoyable movie all the same !

so...we know for a fact that vickers' comment to janek as well as david's comment to vickers (when they wake up from hypersleep etc.) = not script errors. 1) Fassbender didnt say what lindelof had in the script. 2) the writers were well aware of the fact that vickers' comment to janek was not technically accurate (isnt it obvious shes not being literal?! (ie: "it took me forever to get across town"...obviously not)). As far as davids comment to vickers, fassbender clearly went off script (lindelof has confirmed this). Given the fact that fassbender is literally one of the best actors acting today, i think its a safe bet he didnt just fart out his lines. Although there are several possible interpretations of the line, looks to me like fassbender decided it was a good opportunity for david to test vickers. He could have said anything and she wouldnt have caught it. She wasnt listening to him and he knew it. She didnt care to know the exact amount of time they had been asleep. david altered the information he gave her either for amusement ("stupid humans...i hate my creators") or to test vickers...or possibly a bit of both. Point is, its been established that its not a script error which puts it on fassbender; fassbender is a fu*king genius; i doubt he just messed up (and didnt recognize the fact that he messed up. Not to mention the countless other people on set who are checking for script accuracy).

@joeyjoe: Thanks for pointing that out. I hope it doesn't take away from people's impression of the film or of Fassbender's performance, which was superb.

..36 hours.... On another thread there is a discussion about David beinbg able to lie..or at least decieve his human bosses. I think (no matter what the writers say!) David is testing the human(Vickers) just to see if she will call him on his error. She doesn't,,so David is assured he can get away with more untruths,,to his advantage.. It also occurs to me that we are shown David tryng to send a message to Earth,,,Holloway seems surprised there was no response,, Perhaps David faked these transmissions to further his own agenda,,keeping the crew isolated from any help...or hope..
