MemberOvomorphOct-24-2012 6:17 PMAfter reading a lot of your discussions yesterday I see again the movie with friends and I think that I find the real significate of this opening scene.
- The scene is on the earth, about 2000 years ago, and the engineer is a kind of scientist that is controlling the evolution of his creation.
Then, the race of engineers decide to destroy the earth, and this engineer kill himself because is not agree.
I thing this for some reasons:
1) The engineers are coming to earth many times to learn humans, we can see in the prehistoric paintings, and temples were the starts are printed.
2) I think that in the engineers race is 2 different partys, one likes to expand the life and the other no. This is the reason because the engineer of the first sequence kill himself. He know that nothing can do, and after to mark in the caves and temples the starts (having a think that maybe humans some time can go to destruct the base if something goes wrong) and then kill himself.
3) If we think why they create humans, and why the experiment goes wrong, and why they dont return to star to help the failed mission... is many black holes that have to think that some internal war or problem happens in the engineers.
But I am totally sure that opening scene is in the earth, the moment that the 'learners' of the humans know about the destruction of his creation, and kill himself because dont share the idea with the other.

MemberOvomorphOct-24-2012 7:45 PMFirstly, the creation of mankind was not 2,000 years ago — that was the time of Christ — try a million. That was not a suicide, it was a 'sacrifice' to spread the DNA at the waterpoint to flow throughout the rivers... I suspect there was more than just one engineer 'sacrificing' himself — probably many in planet quadrants to spread the genetic material throughout.

MemberOvomorphOct-31-2012 12:10 PMopening scene is very OBVIOUS!!!!! he's not there to create life, he's there coz he represents prometheus. he's been cast out of olympus and exiled on earth as a punishment. the black goo he drinks to either commit suicide or coz he's ordered to drink it and terminate his life, thus unknowingly creating life

I had not come across this thread,,that there would be several/many more on what we assume is earth...to hasten the development of humans..
If there would be one person per quadrant..,,,then they are potent Engineers indeed..
Also what about the 'airborn' particles depicted in the movie,,would trhey spreaqd as fast as the water based particles?
Maybe no difference,,but they seemed to also spreading from the Sacrificial Engineers...but it not shown to combine with anything..

also, the implication is that the process depicted (or something similar) took place multiple times on earth (and elsewhere). The engineers eventually came back to earth to make genetic upgrades/alterations. In addition, very basic life (you can see very basic lichen-like flora on the ground in the opening scene) existed on earth prior to this cambrian-esque spark provided by the sacrificial engineer. Ridley has stated that the deconstructed genetic material belonging to the sacrificial engineer is combining with the basic, single celled, indigenous life present in the water (as seen in the cellular depictions at the end of the opening scene).
That opening scene is fantastic. i just love everything about it.

The green in the opening scenes looked like trees on the first viewing...and sort of through me off ..
In the flyover the green was on the ground between streams of water,,,,;lichen- like flora makes more sense..
I also enjoyed the opening sequence..especially spotting the shadow of the spaceship in the valley..a first indication that something special is going to happen..

1) There is life in the first sequence. Some trees and liquens. Why he expand more life if there is plants?
2) Why you explain the 'paintings' in old caves and cultures? This explain that engyneers live together with humans in that times...
I know that the human race have milions, and I know that was in the christ times when the engyneer kill himself, we have the information from the base event.
For this I believe more that my theory is more plausible, the engyneer kill himself because is a friend of the humans and the rest of the engyneers go out of the earth with the ship.

THis is the first real suggestion I have read about the Sacrificial Engineer being a friend of the earthlings.
Perhaps all humanity has already been rooted out,,and now with a virgin earth again the Sacarificial Engineer is re starting the seeding process and views this sacrifial act as another chance for Earth to suppoirt an intelligent lifeform.
All this leads us to our existence and the future as desribes in our movie.
