MemberOvomorphOct-28-2012 10:04 AMWhen Shaw entered the emergency cesarean request into the MedPod in Vicker's quarters it responded it was calibrated for male patients only...why? Because Weyland was onboard is one assumption, however, from a story line perspective was it that important to draw out that distinction? I'm not a doctor, but the operation looked pretty much like a cesarean anyway.
Was the male only calibration merely used to create an extra 3 seconds of drama? Or, could there be a bigger back story or reason for the male only calibration? I assume Vickers definitely didn't know the MedPod was only calibrated for males; seeing how she was so focused on her own preservation.
On a sidenote, why would such a technologically advanced machine, on such a mission, be only calibrated for only one sex to begin with...what does this say?

MemberOvomorphOct-28-2012 10:07 AMWas the Med-Pod too small to be used on Engineers? They seem to be of male side of the sexual fence..

MemberOvomorphOct-28-2012 10:11 AMHi Indy - The MedPod was definately too small to fit in an engineer.

MemberOvomorphOct-28-2012 10:17 AM Yes.. but it just seemed like a comment to start off a lazy Sunday.
But you sort of wonder if there were medical facilities,,that could be used..for any life foirms discovewred on this trip..
I mean Prometheus is a large ship..maybe a Gymnasium size room could be a makeshift hospital..for unknown creatures.

MemberOvomorphOct-28-2012 12:10 PMThey didn't go to LV-223 with the intention of fixing up sick aliens. They went there so that aliens could fix up a sick Weyland!
As you say, the medipod was there for Weyland's use. The fact that Shaw was able to override its inbuilt programming and initiate a manual procedure was a) to add a bit of tension and b) remind us how smart she is.
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent

AdminEngineerOct-28-2012 12:31 PMYeah, with Weyland being as old and frail as he was, that MedPod was without a doubt for Weyland, not an Engineer.

It sort of begs the question who could use the med Pod? David of course,,,but also Ford must have been availible to assisit Weyland in achieving his immortality,,
Shaw knew there were only a few built,,but showed great skill in it's use,,and quickly went to manual mode after the machine rejected her original request.

MemberOvomorphOct-28-2012 8:16 PMI think that's a great point that can be easily overlooked, and it shows that if she hadn't had that knowledge "in her" then she may not have survived.
She had to overcome the male only programming, David's programming/infection of Holloway's sperm and its result, and Weyland's plan.
To do so she had to quickly combine logic with intuition/instinct, and then her previous knowledge base/familiarity (with the machine and medicine) allows her to logically and instinctively figure out what to do in such a short amount of time. Her medical knowledge allows her to quickly move ahead and rely on her intuition and reflexes when her panic kicks in, but she's still thinking logically and somewhat rationally. Even possibly suspecting or believing something was up when they were freezing her, and choosing to fight back instinctively. Fighting against David's authority. Gaining control of her own fate. Something Vickers and the rest of the crew couldn't do. She chooses what to believe and has a weird mix of science and faith, but she doesn't ignore evidence (she sometimes doesn't ask enough questions). She asks the right questions but not enough, and she lets the potential answers influence her changing perspective. Instead of sticking with the first impression she admits she was wrong about some things and her David and Janek begin to be on the same train of thought about the bio-weapons.
On some level David does actually mean he didn't think she had it "in her" to make it out of the situation.

MemberOvomorphOct-29-2012 12:33 AMPerhaps David changed the programming after realizing she was pregnant just in case.
He was a nasty little android don't forget!

MemberOvomorphOct-29-2012 3:40 AMthe medpod was calibrated for a male human being (specifically, for peter weyland). Vickers coming along on the mission was an afterthought (stated in the film). Obviously, when the ship was designed, weyland covered all of the bases concerning his medical needs (enter....the medpod). The fact that the medpod actually states that it is calibrated for male patients only is in the film to, among other things, provide a bit of foreshadowing.

MemberOvomorphOct-29-2012 2:29 PMI'm not sure but i think a " cesarean" is simply a type and location of an incision. Note that she had to input "remove foreign body" into the computer.
I would guess if it was programmed for females there would be no need to do this except in special circumstances.
