With her Medical background she is shown useful..funtional...skilled..dependable..not robotic,,but more of an adult human..
I recall seeing the movie the first time,,and wondering who she was,'
With the DVD rrelease she sort of aeound all the action.. it is easy to see her role as not threatening to anyone,,even David.
Does Ford just exist so she can die at the hands of Bob?...a filler for the scriptwriter to round out scenes..?

why is it that everyone dies at the end except for one person in every alien film?
i thought his name was Frank

So cheaper actors can be used for the next episode?
And in the case of Prometheus and Alien a Xeno also seems to survive..

"why is it that everyone dies at the end except for one person in every alien film?"
Actually thats only true in the original. In Aliens Ripley, Rebecca, Hicks and Bishop (well parts of him) survive. In 3, the remaining convicts survive and in 4 the remaining crew of the Betty survives along with the Ripley clone.
In Space, no one can hear you fart.

THe Alien deaths as I recall sort of occur as the crew separates,,the one thing you should never in a movie involving death....
Prometheus has more charactors to die...but except for Fifield and Millborne, leaving the group,,our crew were sort of together,,
Now the Engineers did what they should not so,, (based on the holograph) separated in smaller groups till the last running Engineer was decapitated..
THe Last Engineer was the last to survive of the crew,,and when woken..decided he was not going to die,,kill all humans that were closeby and carry out a mission to destroy our Earth..
Thise darn Xenos not only won't die,,,but tr-invent themselves into an improved lifeform.
It seems to me as far as the cast dying,,that the humans are the most vulnerable,, It is a bit surprising that Shaw did survive!!

shaw and david are central to the story ridley is trying to tell. the real interesting character dynamics lie within those two characters. everything ridley needs to illustrate, he can illustrate through shaw and david. I would like to see prometheus 2 have shaw and david as the only two human/humanoid characters in the film. that woul be very interesting. great contrast to prometheus and would allow for gobs of character development. if prometheus 2 is going to be a major departure from the traditional alien formula, id like it to go in the aforementioned direction.

I agree with you @Joeyjoe. The sequel should have a minumum of human envolement as possible. I want the film to focus on the Engineers and the other alien races that might be added to the film. I really would like it if Ridley would finally add the Elephantine Space Jockey race. Those to me are what a true horror science fiction film is supposed to have. A macbre race of giant creatures who are the true creators of the human and Engineer races. That is what the word Alien is all about.

Yes a Sahw and David storyline could be developed in several ways.
I am not a fan of flashbacks,,,but I would be curious to find how the Engoineers' check up voyages to earth,,lead to the cave paintings..
As far as charactor development.. I think I would want a few more human forms in the mix. How that can be accomplished,,remains to be seen..
If there some melding of David and Shaw,,into a Human Bio-Mechanical charactor,,I would be down with that.
(I can see Ridley reading all of the site's posts for storylines)

"Does Ford just exist so she can die at the hands of Bob?"
I don't know why you're asking this question, because you have previously mentioned that she performs a useful part in a number of key scenes. So, evidently, she is there for other reasons than to die.

Yes she is in a number of scenes,..but she is one charactor that doesn't seem connected to any other...
  Janek/Chance/Revel
 Janek/Vickers
 Vickers/Weyland
 Holloway/Shaw
 David/ Everybody
 Fifield/Millburn
and
 Ford/?
It may not be as important as other questions in this forum..but it would be something I would discuss.if site member were sort of across the table over a cup of coffee..

Thinking of the explosinbg head scene,, it was interesting that the Engineers' helmet didn't recieve much script time.. What kind of material?..construction?..are questions that would seen needed to be answered.

Shaw's immediate concern was to look into the Engineer's genetics. Things moved pretty quickly after that and the opportunity wasn't there to do all the experiments they would have liked to have done. David had his mind – and fingers – on other matters.

Ford screams hysterically when the Hammerpede flies out of Millburn's mouth. She's also the only character who visibly trembles & looks totally terrified of 'Bob.'
I kind of thought her character was giving a 'nod' to Lambert from Alien.

Ford also displayed anxiety while they were electifying the head and couldn't drop the amps down quick enough. It was a little surprising because she was pretty matter of fact in the other scenes.

There was a suggestion on another thread that an alien might have been a member of the Prometheus crew.
If this is some of RS thinking what charactor might be a candidatefor hidden background.
The one that first came to mind was Shaw but if somehow she had an alien background well even for me it is too well hidden and saw no possible examples of this thinking in our movie.
The one exception was that she she did survive Was this luck or her motivation?
Even Holloway has been mentioned and he could be a candidate. He leaves our show about 1/2 way through this story. If he was the one well he checked out a bit early.
I would like to propose Ford, a charactor that started this thread.
". she is there for other reasons than to die..."
This comment from zzplural are taken by me a little out of context but the words do address a question I raised earlier in this thread.
She is everywhere in this movie and interacts with just about all of the charactors(with the exception of Vickers). She also lasts for most of the movie.
If she was not a spear holder then she was there for a purpose
She may have died because the ends have been tied up: She delivered humans to a moon to meet the Engineers by any means she felt useful to this end.
Weyland is dead, Shaw has met a living Engineer and plans are in place for the flight to Earth to wipe out humanity.
If an Alien back ground has a interest in Human development throughout our history maybe now is have a true believer actually meet a maker.
In reading over this post it sort of trying to find a line of thought that ties into a higher theme than just another spaceship landing on a moon far outside the Earth's solar system.

Ford is human. She looks very robotic towards the end of the movie but that's because most of her memory has been stolen.
