MemberOvomorphNov-17-2012 7:21 AMThe DNA of a nematode worm is 75% similar to that of humans, i.e. it's fairly advanced stage of evolution when compared to simple organic compounds / amino acids.
Did the Engineer's realise that life already existed on this planet and could they have been attempting to 'wipe it clean' by terraforming.
Perhaps the black gloop is a terraforming 'tool' simply used to accelerate life.

AdminPraetorianNov-17-2012 10:33 AMThis is a great article describing the similarities in DNA of nematodes and humans; DNA of humans, chimps have 45,000,000 differences. It's an interesting read. :)

I LIKE WORMS! I LOVE WORMS!

MemberOvomorphNov-17-2012 8:17 AMTo a non scientist that 75 % seems to high when comparing a worm to a human.
I didn't think we had much in common with a worm
My guess would have been 5% match.
I bet there is a 100% match to the worms on 'Dune'.
I don't know how the worms started to appear in the Big Head Room.
THey must have just been dormat,,waiting to be activated by the treads of humans.
There was a suggestion on a post that they were purposly placed in the diort by David..I don't see how as the scene unfolds in the movie.

Perhaps it is. We do get to see various incarnations of black goo: at the beginning; streaming out of Engineers' bodies; oozing out of the urns. Are they all different, or manifestations of the same thing? We don't know.
Since it is fiendishly clever stuff, and clearly designed by someone or something extremely intelligent, I could believe that the same stuff could have multiple purposes and modes of operation.
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent

MemberOvomorphNov-20-2012 1:43 PMWould further investigation unearth past generations of the results of a terraforming 'tool'..used on LV-223? Or pehaps on the ringed PLanet below.
I sort of like the idea of the goo becoming many things depending on the substance used for mixing.
A Universal Goo..

MemberDeaconNov-20-2012 6:24 PMYou would be surprised how much DNA we share with even the most bizarre lifeforms on Earth.
Thats why i interpreted the opening scene as being a World that has basic life maybe only as far as bacteria and thus no kinds of Fish, Mammal, Bird or Reptiles.
It was the Engineers seeding that mixed his DNA with the basic forms of life on that World to later Evolve into Fish, Mammal, Bird or Reptiles.
The movie to me basically seems to show that the Engineers seed is what kick started Evolution of basic to more complex organisms.
But the Engineers would have came back over and over to once again re-engineer and advance what ever they was creating.
As far as the Worms go the movie seemed to indicate that the crew brought them into the Chamber from outside the Head Statue/Mural Room....
But if you look at it closely well there is one already on the ground before David treads and two more come off his shoes, so the Worms must already had got into that Room.
Also of note could be the deleted scene our first Alien in which in the water of the Terraforming location where that area is producing water and oxygen they find a worm/eel like organism that looks more like the Hammerpedes than the worms.
