MemberOvomorphDec-12-2012 3:34 PMWhen Janek comes back to the Conn to attend to Vicker's needs wouldn't a Catain seek out or replay any overnight transmissions?
While Millburn and Fifield are under attack their A/V transmission must have continued even if there was no one on the bridge,
Aside from the storm elements sort of messing up the xmissions when did the crew members actually lose contact with the ship?
Judging by the attacks it seems that Millburn would have been on the air the longest capuring the dialoge we hear in the movie.
That in it's self should have alerted Janek that there was danger afoot in the tunnels and not be surprised.
Perhaps the Military minded posters could address this issue of the Capt. and what he should do when coming back on deck ,,so to speak.

MemberOvomorphDec-12-2012 9:49 PMI'm thinking that the storm had affect on this. Maybe it could only receive but not save the transmission.

MemberOvomorphDec-12-2012 11:24 PMThe storm might have done some transmission damage but that seems too easy, Perhaps David had some input to trashing the signal.
I just think there should have been some means to reach/track stranded crew members during difficult times.

AdminPraetorianDec-12-2012 4:02 PMYeah I was also surprised at how seemingly aloof Janek was to their plight. Then again there was nothing anyone could do, because of the storm, so I guess being the captain he had to play it cool, calm them as best he could and hope for the best until they could be rescued once the storm died down.

MemberFacehuggerDec-12-2012 4:23 PMMilitary-wise, there should have been someone to monitor all transmissions at all times, but this was not a military mission.
I guess when Milburn & Fifield ditched, no one was really thinking they had a need to fear for their safety?
After all, it was just another tomb, right?
WRONG!

MemberOvomorphDec-13-2012 1:34 AMThe signal was lost. Probably due to physical damage. If you recall, Fifield's transmissions were highly broken up.

MemberOvomorphDec-13-2012 5:25 AMAs much as I love this movie, I think the problem here was not in the transmission as much as the script. It was a flaw but it made the movie work by moving it right along and not giving them any clue what they were walking into. So I would have probably agreed if I was sitting in on a script meeting with RS on this one.

MemberOvomorphDec-13-2012 8:07 AMzzplural is right; all evidence indicates that Fifield and Milburn’s signal and feed displays dropped in and out sporadically because of the storm, Janek confirms this is the film. When looked at forensically, their radio and video feed dropping out before they are killed is consistent with the evidence and is exactly what is implied when Janek says to Shaw, “The last time they radioed in was where you found that head.” Thus it is clear their video feed and radio dropped out right after Milburn radioed in.
Indeed, when the storm hits it causes radio degradation and thus their signal comes in and out sporadically on the holographic map, on the radio, the video monitors and they didn’t have a map and only had digital compasses. The crew’s devices on their wrists only read environmental stats like temperature, air, etc, and only triangulate geographic latitude and longitude coordinates of the pups and their own position. Essentially without Janek who has access to the holographic map the crew only have digital compasses but no map. This is important.
When the pups first start scanning, Fifield soon says, “Pups are saying this way”, he’s reading either the latitude or longitude of a couple of pups and their environmental read outs leading them through a straight passage way to the water hole indicating an atmosphere processor generating breathable air. As they pass through more identical, maze-like tunnels and passageways deeper into the temple, knowing where you were or where the exit was in lat/long coordinates, which are useless for navigation without a map, in a foreign, unfamiliar place, with multiple tunnels and passage ways that look the same, with radio interference, without an android, whilst paranoid and stoned will get you lost.
Though Fifield seemed perfectly confident relying on a digital compass, knowing long/lat directions would have been useless since you would have to remember which passage ways or tunnels lead back and when the storm hits the storm causes intermittent radio degradation interfering with their signal that comes in and out sporadically on the holographic map and video monitors. This is why Janek asks for their positions on their compasses later when he finds the ping.
Heck people still get lost with GPS and satnav due to inattentional blindness among other factors; case in point - http://news.discovery.com/autos/gps-navigation-lost-trust-110517.html
The two of them getting lost symbolizes the paradox of man; that despite all his technological advancement and evolution; having travelled light years into space, his navigational skills are still inferior to lower animals and his technology is still thwarted by the elements. It seems many missed the philosophical point here. See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHdlG_KMAv0

MemberOvomorphDec-16-2012 3:07 PMNo you can't say it was the transmission because they cut to the inside of the Prometheus when Melborne was talking about finding the elongated reptile before it went haywire so that should have been sufficient info.

MemberOvomorphJan-04-2013 2:57 AMYes you're right, we have the scene on the empty deck cutting to the transmission, the point is that the transmission is sporadic due to radio degradation, when it cuts to Milburn radioing in about an elongated reptile, that was the very last radio call that Janek informs Shaw about ('the last time they radioed in is where you found that head'), strongly indicating that Janek did replay the radio transmission and the feed either dropped out or was distorted right after the call, since it was dropping in and out sporadically ever since the storm set in. Forensically this is consistent. So yes, Janek only had intel about an elongated reptile but the radio and feed dropped out after Milburn's call, how were they to know what transpired?

MemberOvomorphJan-04-2013 9:49 AMSlow to decide but quick to act. It seems to me that Janek displays this kind of personality with the giving of his life and the ship's at the end.
In this thread it always bothered me a bit that Janek didn't seem to too concerned with the Fifield/Millburn being left behind in the tunnels while a raging storm prevent a rescue mission.
Granted that the storm was quite intense..and it is this particular night for amorous adventures/distractions on the Prometheus still should tye safety of crew members be an overriding concern?
I mean if Shaw and/or Holloway were left behind would events have unfolded differently as far as a rescue?
Continuing with Janek and rescue..when did they start their travel back to the tunnels after the storm?
I wanted him to immedietly start back when the storm subsided not when a sunny dawn occurs the next day.. Don't wait You have lost contact with crew members and really don't know has has happenned.
In summary I feel there should have been more urgency, intensity, follow up and enegy expended in getting back in contact with the lost crew members to be more on the scene when the real action starts.
I wouldn't call any of this a script/plot error just a presentation of human emotions getting in the way of helping two crew members separated from the ship.
Technically Janek may bit have been incharge of the expedition but he had a responsibility to force Vickers/SHaw/Holloway to force a rescue mission as soon as possible..instead of singing or rolling in the hay.
