MemberOvomorphFeb-04-2013 10:57 PMUpon my (ridiculous, I know) 32nd viewing, during the scene with David in the activated orrery, I couldn't help but hear the old song "whole world in his hands" playing in my head.
I'm not a Christian man, but I looked it up and the song was apparently inspired by Job 12:10 which is written as follows:
"In His Hands is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind."
Is this (the image of David holding the earth, not the song) a reference to the seat of power upon which David sat? He really did have the power to, and almost succeeded in eradicating mankind after all.
Whether this was his premeditated intention is also up for debate, I suppose.

Perhaps he envisions himself as a god or a king, and he does seem to be in contemplation of what to do in this scene. I can't help but think of the Grinch looking down on Whoville and getting "a wonderful, awful idea."
