I wondered since seeing the movie, how would the engineers choose a scarifice. Im guessing here but I think the sacrifice is born and raised as one. This goes back to the DNA harvest theory . I think after the DNA is harvested by the xenos and is extracted from the eggs . The new strands are identified and used to create a new life form(engineer) . This engineer is raised in an environment such as monastery or engineers version of . He is raised in a way of the engineers belief structure, he is observed and evaluated to see if he is free of sin and is pure of heart. If so he may offer his life as a sacrifice to seed a planet.
"how do you feel?"-" great, next stupid question"

@ Pulserifle187 I think that your question reaches right into the whole heart of the movie and leads to the overall question of why as human beings are we here and what is the purpose. I think the beauty of the question lies in the importance of DNA and it’s evolutionary path of development along with the where does a species such as the human race proceed. There is also the question of whether suicide is a selfish act that leads nowhere and to certain religions is a sin. In this instance is it? Getting down to the fundamentals of everyone’s existence, what is the purpose of sex. Why do we procreate? A possible answer to this question is that we all have the abilty through sex to pass on our genes to another generation through mating and having offspring. To not pass on our genetic information to another generation is genetic suicide. Is this a form of natural selection? who knows? I will add at this point that breeding to create a genetic lineage and personal sexuality are two different things. If a society existed that could ask the question of whether an individual could pass on their DNA to an entire planet through their death without having sex. The chance of that, might seem quite a high honour. Think about that carefully, because for anyone who has children will realise that for the average human, we invest the future of our DNA in only a small number of offspring. To have an individuals DNA forming the template of an entire planet is pretty mind blowing. So, what exactly is suicide when you look at it on a procreation level, and the ability to influence an entire planet. Maybe suicide in this instance is not a selfish act and not without its reward.
