When Shaw asked if he could read it David said 'perhaps'.
David was able to open the door to the Ampule Room & he was also able to make his way to the Orrey Room, so he does know something more than the others?

If he was able to would he have told them ???
Or wait until weyland knew about it ??

@Oduodu; Good question! I assume it was because they didn't ask him what it said or meant, he obviously knew how to translate it, so why did none of the crew ask him what it said/meant? It's yet another inconsistency imo because if you're on a mission to find your creator and you want answers, surely you would ask for a translation to the alien writing? They all really are thick as f**k!
The poster was good though!

One of the original trailers had an exceprt from this scene where David looked at the writing on the wall but when asked "Can you read the writng" he looked away as if he was thinking "Yes.. but given what it says...should i "! This would abviously have led us to belive he was leading everyone deliberately into danger but was edited out for some unknown reason.

Oi remember from somewhere holloway saying to david: please tell me you can read them . Or was that shaw ???

Necronom 4November 27, 2013
Yes he was asked, "Can you read the writing," but they're not asking him what it meant. He is an android, so unless asked what it meant, he doesn't have to elaborate. I assume that a natural response for a robot if asked, "Can you read the writing," would be "yes," "no," or "maybe... just give me a minute to scan it."
Nobody asked him to elaborate, WHY?

Davis has unlimited memory - hi iq is 350 - he has incredible eyesight - processing those hyroglyphics in millionths of a second - agter seeing them all together I thinh je had a pretty good idea what tey meant - he knew about paradise - from the hyroglypics perhaps ??

@Oduodu; Exactly! And the crew would have known that. He opened the door to the ampule chamber for christs sake, why did no-one think to ask him later what it said/meant?

Yes because shaw asked what hge was doing and he replied he was opening the door and she said wait we don't know what's on the other side . And when the door opens he said "oops" too casually like he really wanted that door open because he had a very good idea what was on the other side. I guess.

They were distracted left and right by ancient goodies, you gotta figure David could be interviewed later for a translation. He didn't lie, he just sidestepped the question. It would have been interesting if Holloway had said: " You there. Translate that for me, chiphead."
I imagine an inscription like that would have been a motivational slogan. Or warning, like you'd find in a factory or lab. It wasn't done hastily. I doubt it was the story of their demise.
It probably said: " Do not pet the Hammerpedes."

Has anyone tried to translate the writings themselves? On the extra CD's their is a graph that explains what each letter in the alphabet and the corresponding alien symbol looks like. I tried to pause the movie and translate it myself, but what I ended up with wasn't English. Just wondering if anyone else has tried the same and what they came up with.

You would have to assume he could interpret some of it at the very least, and if not every word...
As he also knew how to open the Cryo Pod to release the Engineer so he had grasped a good deal of their Tech and how to use it.

I hope the text image helps those of you who wish to try :)

A few members have tried to translate it but as far as I know they haven't succeeded. Here's a link to an old thread on the same subject:

maybe someone on here could tweet Jon Spaihts to ask him if he knows what it says, or give us a clue on how to work it out? I'm not on twitter so that rules me out.
Then again it could just be gibberish.
The poster was good though!
