CINEMA Magazine Reporter Scott Orlin recently tweeted a photo from the set of ALIEN: Covenant.

It shows him holding a clapperboard from the film, which depicts Giger's Necronom IV. Could this prove significant to the reworked design of the Alien?

Scott Orlin's Twitter

As we know, Sir Ridley Scott stated that the original Alien would make an appearance in the movie along with a new creature. Does the image prove what many fans are hoping for, a return to the look of the unique and mysterious work of H.R Giger, or as we refer to it The Giger-verse?

I have always loved the pale coloured, almost translucent quality of the Necronom series of paintings. That was the design originally intended for the Alien, but the Translucent Suit never worked out. Modern prosthetics merged with CGI could properly re-imagine Giger's work!

UPDATE: 2 more photos of the clapperboard have been shared!

Nice find Lone!

I read here somewhere that there would possibly be a translucent creature, Ridley has to be thrilled to finally be able to realize that vision, so much more like something you'd find under a rock, yes?

I just hope the life forms will remain eyeless, it's key to their dark, damp dreadfulness. Like those blind spiders that live in caves. Something meant to dwell the basement of the universe.

No doubt all this will happen, this is an amazing time to be an enthusiast of things otherworldly and awful. MORB Magnificence!

I think originally Ridley liked the eyeless look as it was more alien and creepy. Note this design has only 5 fingers.

Agreed Noob....exciting times ahead!

You guys will not believe this.....twice in the last week I have had the same dream, where I meet Ridley Scott [in the small seaside home town where I was born, of all places!]

He was extremely polite, and very enthusiastic when I proposed the idea of being allowed to ask him some questions about Covenant...remember, it's a dream people....

So my first question related to the Giger aesthetic, I asked if he would be returning to H.R's original design, more particularly the pale, decayed, translucent quality of the MORB 'skin.'

He leans in and whispers, "I will tell you, but you have to promise me you will keep it a *uckin* secret!"

"Absolutely Sir Ridley....I promise....I swear..."

Right at that moment his phone rings and I wake up!

Then I spot that image on the clapperboard! Hahaha I am going crazy for all things MORB, all over again.

Well spotted Lone! You must have amazing eye sight to spot that!

Maybe it's just a nod to Giger. But then again, if that were the case, surely they would have a picture of him on the clapperboard?

Having an image of Necronom 4 may have some significance in that it was what they based the original alien on and it's a clue that they are going to show us the origin of the alien?

The poster was good though!

great discovery! @ Lone .... has the eye of a xenomorph tiger ;) Also that sounds like a wonderful dream! maybe ridley is looking in your head like david did to shaw in cryo sleep lol .....  gosh those giger designs are so friggin amazing...now that giger has past, I'm sure Ridley will definetly honor his work fully and properly...probly even dedicating the film to him... I can't wait to be freaked out

@Mizikzme Welcome to Scified! :D

NECRO and BRG That image has to be a clue! I am so hoping that Covenant will be a Ridley-verse tribute to Giger-verse!

Years ago, whilst doing a college course, I came top out of everyone in the country for photography. It came as a huge surprise to me, and I was told that I had a rare eye for bringing out unique detail in subject matter!

Nowadays, the right side of my brain is little used, but some of the old magic might still be there! XD

That explains it then Lone. I had to increase the size of the image massively to see it and even then I could only just make out that it was Necronom 4.

BTW; coming top out of everyone in the country is an amazing accomplishment! Well done my friend!

The poster was good though!

As much as I enjoyed 'Prometheus', the lack of Giger type designs made it feel like it was not quite a part of the Alien franchise.  However, maybe that was always the plan.  Things in the beginning were less Giger-y and as things get interfered with (humans getting infected, giving birth to new creatures, etc), the Giger-verse starts to emerge.

Yes well done Lone ;)

As for this new Photo its interesting, but maybe it could be a Red Herring?

Who knows, the Source did say that one of the Monsters is based off Necromon 4 and looks different to the Classic Xenomorph but we can make a connection, they also said that Prometheus as far as Alien Engineers where going for the same concept but abandoned it after Lindeloffs re-write to tone down the Xeno DNA

Ridley did say they wanted a fresher form or Xenomorph and the Neconom 4/Ultramorph certainly would fit the bill.... especially the one with those Eyes.

If they are showing us a Xenomorph Origins, then lets look at it as in context of designing Alien.

We had Dan O'Bannons Star Beast start it all off, but by the time it was evolved into Alien,  Ridley had seen HR Gigers Necronom 4 and felt that was it, thats what we want and so Giger did some concept work which is shown in the main post.... then he also did another that was related also to HR Gigers Necronom 5

And so while what inspired Ridley to take HR Giger on board to design the Alien, was Necronom 4, Giger also did a design that also incorporated Necronom 5

When they finally got HR Giger to do the final Alien designs it was very much Necronom 5 as far as Head Design but also elements of Necronom 2

In effect the Alien Big Chap was based off mainly Necronom 4's Body, with 5's head and the face of Necronom 2 and maybe the Penis Tongue inspired the Pharyngeal Jaw

So if we look in the context of the design, then yes the Origin of our Alien as far as Concept, was Necronom 4 and i think introducing something like this would be fantastic.

The image has been overlaid by the scene details sheet, so it is not that easy to spot!

I just have a feeling that at least one of the alien designs may incorporate more of the original Necronom organic look and possibly the translucent appearance.

I mean it can't be beaten for Alien-ness

This needs to be a clue. The last image of an Alien: Covenant clapperboard we saw simply had the standard wallpaper, no Giger designs or anything. So, the fact that this one was purposefully equipped with this clapperboard and was shared to social media, leads me to believe this was in fact a clue. I think this is directly correlated to what one of the new Aliens will look like in Covenant, as Big Dave suggested.

So how do we see this chap or chapette coming about. The emphasise on the pale, translucent,bio-mechanoid suggests this is the guy who results from events inside the movie. The second monster as I recall from last autumn and the brief Paradise Lost period is not new so that may well be the Deacon.

So the Lone discovery possibly has Shaw and big idea David in the food chain and Mr T and or even possibly David C who plays the same role as the Engineer does for the Deacon.

So the Deacon is the result of the "evolving creature" and the Paradise Lost phase of the Engineers history.

One of these charming characters generates Eggs so that would mean either the Deacon is a Deaconess or as we discussed elsewhere they use the Egg Morphing technique.

Possibly the Lone discovery in an act of symbolic retribution and punishment sets up the egg morphing which leads down to what we know and love.

In the latter scenario the Deacon being the general bad ass of LV223 that we hear scream in the holographic play back spreading Black Goo terror may almost in dramatic terms be a decoy.

Cool. The MORB is not as obvious on those images because of the numbers.

I've been searching all day Chris, so far no other sites appear very excited by this! I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing! XD

To be fair though, not may sites are as nuts about this stuff as we are haha. Maybe we'll get that translucent Alien after all in Alien: Covenant!

Oh yeah, translucent MORB here we come!

One should be able to see the skeleton, the blood circulatory system, the organs etc,” Giger wrote in his diary.

and of course I had to purchase NECAs Translucent Prototype Figure...it is AWESOME!

I think they could pull it off, but it would require someone really Thin, like super skinny i guess, but that is why i guess they casting requested such.

You see if think they would need to wear a under suit that would maybe have details like veins and what not, so that under a See Through Alien Suits you kind of done get the impression of a Man in the Suit, and then CGI can take care of the rest.

With the technology and modern prosthetics available now, I'm sure it could be done very well indeed Dave!

They found Bolaji, so there's a good chance of finding someone of similar stature.

The guys fom ODD STUDIO, who won an oscar for their work on Mad Max, will be involved with the creature prosthetics for Covenant, so I am very confident that we will see something truly outstanding!
