Who is the guy with the military backpack? And when does this happen?

Just spotted the backpack. The people running to the ship is our hero and this guy. I wonder in what order this is. Does the explosion happen first, and the picture to the right is later, maybe at the end of the film, or opposite? 

Whatever happens it means our hero is stuck for a long time. It just add a little new thing the timeline I think.
