I think it was under utilised. It came too far out of left field too late in the film. It should've been flagged a bit earlier, to create some tension and expectation.
That said I think the design works in regard to that stage of development - chestbursters are off-white and fleshy too. Would've been great to see it as an adult.
And in technical terms it's one of the greatest animatronics ever built.

That's great. It could have used better, but thanks to the films short length,it does have unfortunately small screen time. The one thing i'd change is it's nose.
It's not the films length so much, as placement. In Aliens they have a discussion about where the eggs were coming from and Bishop suggests a Queen is laying them. When Ripley meets the Queen it's a call back that the audience had likely forgotten about - right up to the point they see her.
A better idea for Resurrection would be for them to find the Queen dead and have the audience wondering what killed it. So the seed is planted and it's not such a "What the hell is that?" moment when we have the reveal.

4th attempt to reply...
Indeed SM i think that would be better, i was disapointed with the look but mainly the behavoour of the New Born... it was a bit cheesy and reminded me how you would expect the halfway point between a Mogwai and Gremlin to look at act...

Horrible design, horrible role. Absoutely cheesy implementation. Turned Alien:Rez into a comedy that I cannot watch. The thing sniffs like a dog, and moves like Jabba the Hut. In fact, it almost looked like Jabba the Hut's bastard child, and NOTHING like any traditional "Alien" DNA was even involved.

Well, most people found it horrifying when they saw it in Alien when it was a new concept. Today we might need neomorphs?

That's a fantastic idea, even better then Whedon's, that would also tie in nicely to the current final act where the Newborn manages to get on board The Betty.

I like the Newborn *evades a shoe*
I think it looks terrifying with its stretched limbs and doll-li*dodges a chair* ke eyes.
Its groans are bone chilling, and the animatronics *ducks a piano* are amazing!
It also killed the Queen! *gets chased by a combine harvester and an army of furious Aliens fans*

I don't think the newborn was BAD, it just didn't belong in an Alien movie. The Xenos have a sleek beauty to their menace that was COMPLETELY absent from the newborn design.
Safe? Of course he isn't safe, but he's good!

It belonged in that particular Alien movie. It was effectively the anti-Ripley. Mostly Alien DNA with some human. I would've liked for them to take it further and have it try to mate with Ripley as per the script, but ultimately it was an abomination and died like one 10 minutes later. Which was part of the problem.

To me its still frightening.the only frightening alien to me to date,
So weird like a abomination

Exactly, look at that; a real abomination and scary as f***
Compared to the Engineers, Zombie Fifield and the adorable Deacon, it's a masterpiece imo.

@S.M. basically all of Alien Resurrection didn't belong in an Alien film IMO, so I have to agree with you.
Safe? Of course he isn't safe, but he's good!

I was ok with the Newborn. The expressive eyes really set it apart from the Xeno. It almost seemed like it was trying to talk as it died. The only thing I didn't like was its over all posture and it seemed to lumber around rather slowly.

I would have liked to see it running. It made quite the leap to reach the Betty.

This little fellas more scary then the newborn? Come onn
Only the neomorph will surpass it.
We saw too many times xenos getting killed..it makes the fear sleep.

The xenomorph is a lot quieter ther for more deadly.Plus they have a much higher body count.

I see.The NewBorn had a very short life span.Had it lived longer,it would have extremely deadly.

The newborn is probably as close to a ghost that you will come in the Alien franchise as far as the color goes, it was just too far away from how they looked before. AR got the Xenos wrong because they looked like someone had used plastic bags to make as their skin just look when they are in the room and the scientist is pushing that freeze button.
The look of the Newborn wasn’t the worst thing, it was how it behaved. It was almost that they made it cute on purpose. Having new monsters isn’t bad per se but this one didn’t work. For example, the alternate Fifield monster that wasn’t used looked good in its design and it was sort of new. Xenos are supposed to be scary, not cute.
“The thing sniffs like a dog, and moves like Jabba the Hut.“
Ha ha ha! :D Thanks Starlogger, that was fun as hell. How would a mix of Jabba the Hutt and a Xeno look?
Big Dave: Thanks for posting the link to the on Youtube. Either the monster at 0:20 or the one at 0:46 (minus the hair) is my favorite (I cannot decide really). Giving it hair is a bad move since it makes it look too much like a fly. You can see that flies have hair if you take a picture of it and zoom it in a lot. Obviously I don’t know if that was intentional or not but it is an interesting thing to notice nevertheless.
Tiago_miami_la: I wonder how the new-born picks its nose? I can’t really see any well defined nostril on it. ;)

the Rez hybrid ripley alien was just gross and visceral. Jeunet doesn't have an eye for the type of realism of alien verse and at the time I think the film wanted to undo what they did to fincher. Unfortunately the producers added the wrong type of artist to fulfill joss whedons script. Not to mention that joss whedon is too light and comical as well. They were just two talents at the time who didn't have the range for an alien film.
In regards to the new Xeno, i worry that we're too used to monsters altogether and that the set up is really the tension build up and characterization. I would love it if Ridley tried out some of Alfonso cuaron's long take action scenes as a good counter to his errors in Prometheus where the action was too spliced and cut rate. I think the new alien leaked photos look good but it's all about how it plays out.
"You think the newborn is cute?"
Yeah when it squished Distephano's head, then watched his brain slop onto the floor, it looked just like a puppy video. :)

Although i suppose it is a "beautiful, beautiful, little butterfly." And then he bites Gedimans head off. They're so adorable when they're that young;)

What ever, forget it. I guess a better word is different in this case.

My apologies Thoughts_Dreams.I meant no offense. It was a joke really.I've said it before and I'll Say it again, all opinions are welcome.
