They've always looked like a vagina getting rutted by a malformed penis on the proboscis side.

It was always meant to look vaginal. It's funny you mention it actually. Last night, I was at Logan with a friend who had never seen Alien before, and the trailer played and he just leaned over to me and said, "Dude, that looks like a vagina!"

I know it was always supposed to look that way, but LOL @ how obvious and close up it is in the trailer.. this is why I love Ridley Scott.
