the film looks beautiful, a real work of art. The alien architecture and monuments are very creepy and feel like ancient rome, i feel the cinematography could have lingered more on it, but time is prescious.
the acting is so-so, apart from fassbender, who is the star of the film. The covenant crew are a bit space cadet and seem rushed, i didnt feel they were really freaked out by confronting whats on the planet, its a bit light hearted, especially compared to prometheus, which had less threat to the crew but the engineer discovery was truly mysterious.
the plot in my opinion is a bit cliched, its a a tired old concept seen many times before, its very well done but a bit predictable, the aliens themselves now seem to be just like helldogs let off the leash, not a stealthy, intelligent ambush predator. This is a rehash of the original alien in style and visuals, but not tension and suspense, think prometheus with a lot more guns.
i think a lot of people after a while will work out where the series is going and decide whether its better or worse than the other films. For me the million dollar question is what The engineers are really about, the film gives clues but its still open whether they are the main antagonists to humans or there are more levels to the pyramid.
the intriging prospect is how we get to the back end of alien and that ship with alien eggs on, im sure many will indulge in the speculation, based on covenant, you could say its a result of what happens in this film and that its possible the engineers get involved, or that new antagonists can appear and move things in an unexpected direction.
my score - 8 out of 10
a new alien story arc, well delivered, but needs more mystery.
