Well, I saw Covenant yesterday evening. I didn't hate it... but I didn't love it either. I still remember when I came out from Prometheus feeling like I had just visited some strange, darkly beautiful world. I know I'm in the minority here (and don't care), but Prometheus is actually my favorite of all the Alien films. I loved the music, I loved the cinematography, I loved the story. But most of all, I loved the confusing, fascinating relationship between David and Shaw. THAT was what drew me into the story and kept me hooked. I loved it so much I actually saw it twice (an extreme rarity for me).

I went to see Covenant specifically because I wanted to see MORE of the David/Shaw relationship. I saw the Prologue and it gave me hope that Covenant would explore their dynamic in depth.

Ugh, the disappointment. The crushing disappointment...

I specifically wanted the questions posed in the Prologue answered! WHY did David kill all the Engineers? WHY did Shaw die? What did David learn from the Engineers that lead him down the path to genocide? How long did they live together on the Juggernaut? How long did they live together on planet 4?

In a nutshell, I wanted THEIR story told, at least in flashbacks if nothing else. I wasn't expecting the whole movie to be about them (although I think that would have been a far better movie than AC), but good grief I thought we'd get at least a few questions answered. Why even bother to make a Prologue like that if you're going to leave it so open ended?

And I thought we MIGHT get to find out who the Space Jockey was in the original Alien, but nope, we didn't even get that. Nothing but a whole lot more questions.

Anyway, frustration, frustration, frustration. And for the record, I didn't like the direction Scott took with David becoming the full-on insane robot bad-guy. He was so complex and interesting in Prometheus, but in AC he got watered down to your typical megalomaniac villain. He might as well have gone BWAHAHA!! at the end.

The only parts I was really interested in was when he was weeping, talking about losing Elizabeth. I kept thinking "okay, we're fixing to get some answers..." and then nothing...

So I didn't love it. I hope we get some answers in Awakening, but I'm not holding out hope. :(
