MemberPraetorianJul-27-2017 5:35 PMCameron insisted that only Sigourney Weaver could play the lead in Aliens. Fox protested that taking such a stance would allow Weaver a great deal of leverage over her pay, and that they would make Aliens without her if possible. In return, Cameron and Hurd left the project and, recently married, honeymooned to Hawaii. “We assumed it was a dead issue,” said Hurd, “and when we left for Hawaii we thought the movie was off.” But when they returned they found that the movie was still on, and that Weaver had been approached to resume her role of Ripley. Weaver, having found the script suddenly dropped in her lap, was impressed enough with Ripley’s characterisation to sign on. “The emotional content is much greater in Aliens,” she said.
“To begin with, Alien happened in space,” Cameron told Prevue magazine in ’86. “I wanted to take the character further, to know Ripley as a person, to see some depth and emotion. The movie is about her, every scene. It gets inside her mind, takes her back to face her own worst nightmare – and conquer it, so to speak. In a way, Aliens is about her revenge.”
Though the writing process was generally smooth, Cameron noted that “[Sigourney] tried to have an influence on Aliens, but it didn’t work! She said, ‘I don’t want to shoot a gun,’ I said, ‘No, you have to shoot a gun.’ ‘Oh, well, can I get killed?’ ‘No.’ When I saw the third film I cracked up, because it was all the things she’d asked for on the second film.”
“If Jim Cameron hadn’t fallen in love with something about Alien,” stated Sigourney, “then a sequel wouldn’t have been made. No one really wanted to touch it … Luckily, Jim wanted to make his own movie.”

MemberTrilobiteJul-27-2017 5:43 PMInteresting. All I can think of to say that as a director, it is his series to ruin.

MemberTrilobiteJul-27-2017 5:53 PMAti Sorry. I would say riPley was an obvious asset and certainly did not ruin the series. I stand by what I said about riDley.

MemberChestbursterJul-27-2017 6:06 PMRipley did not ruin the franchise imo. She was a fantastic protagonist throughout all the four original films. What would have ruined the franchise though is Neil's fanfic.

MemberChestbursterJul-27-2017 6:39 PMjoylitt I get it that you don't like Fassbender but both him and Sigourney are fantastic actors. Neil's idea would erase half the franchise for a silly shoot em up appealing to nostalgia. I'd rather a creative idea that propels the entire saga.

MemberNeomorphJul-27-2017 6:50 PMLawrence of Arabia I do like Fassbender; I am highly anticipating "The Snowman" which seems to be the next "Silence of the lambs". I was just bugging ati who is so openly trolling Ripley fans haha

MemberDeaconJul-28-2017 10:04 AMI will add my full TWO Cents after as i will be a bit busy...
But i dont think Ripley Ruined the Franchise, i think her Character did make the Franchise, but after so long it would have eventually just sucked, there is only so much they could do with Ripley and i felt Alien 3 gave her the kind of Ending that just worked so well...
Miss Weaver did want to be killed off in Alien 3 too, it seemed she had enough of playing that Character and felt that her dying would be the right way to go.... its how Miss Weaver had changed since Alien Resurrection that i dont agree with, she seems to me to be someone who feels that without her Character the Franchise would not be what it is, and in some interviews comes across a bit arrogant... seems she wants to have her Finger in all the Alien Pies.
Indeed the Alien Franchise is Large, and these Movies and especially the First 3 are what a lot of people remember Miss Weaver from... these Movies Made Miss Weaver a Star and for her getting back to these movies will put her back in the Public Eye and Make some Money too.
I dont think she needs Alien though, as i am sure Camerons Plans for Avatar will see Miss Weaver grab some good Screen Time and put her back in the Movie News Sections again.
I think the way the Franchise moved was good, i am not 100% sure about Alien Resurrection though, for me the Character was Tarnished.
I also think while Ripley did not Ruin the Franchise, i cant see how introducing her into the Franchise again would do any Favors, maybe it may make a bit more Money $$$$
But overall i think it would damage the Franchise....
For me Lieutenant First Class Ellen Louise Ripley died on Fiorina "Fury" 161 ..........R.I.P

MemberChestbursterJul-29-2017 12:46 PM@Big Dave I agree, I am an Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 fan and I think just like you that that was a perfect ending for Ripley. All the other movies seem to, in my opinion, take away from the impact those 3 movies have had.

MemberChestbursterJul-29-2017 12:55 PMAnd about Ripley, she is the Alien franchise plain and simple. And if they ever want someone to take her place then they can't kill off whatever female lead they put in the role, like Shaw or Daniels possibly. If you want another face to the franchise, and please no more David, you gotta stick with someone and not totally write them off, like Shaw. And you know what's crazy if Daniels would have known at the end of Covenant that that wasn't really Walter, buy asking a couple simple questions, and took out David that would have been enough to save the movie for me. Even with all that is wrong with Covenant, and in my opinion there is a lot, that would have salvaged it for me. Because no one is that dumb that when there are two identical living things, in this case androids, that someone wouldn't ask a couple questions that only that person would know to verify that in this case Walter is Walter, so dumb.

MemberNeomorphJul-31-2017 1:30 AMNah, she did well in 1-3 even though they should have focused more on other characters also, it was AR that was bad. Vasques and Hicks were way more interesting than Ripley in Aliens IMO. Ripley was one of the least interesting characters in Aliens. I like how she ended in Alien 3, they should have stopped there.
One thing that is good about the prequels is that there is no Ripley. It is not that the character is bad, I just don’t understand why she has got to be in every alien related movie.
I agree with Dr. Curt Connors that they should keep and develop Daniels in the next movie to make her more interesting. Her character could have been done a lot better and the same goes for Tennessee. They don’t have a lot that makes them stand out compared to many other characters in Covenant. Each person should have distinct personality traits in a movie in order to make him or her interesting, Covenant failed a lot with this.

MemberChestbursterJul-31-2017 2:51 AMShe is already a Ripley clone, doesn't she have the same rank on the ship? Doesn't she have a line of her's? Kill her off already. And Tennessee is a pale Dallas. Kill him off too.

MemberNeomorphJul-31-2017 3:36 AMRed0guy@gmail.com: I disagree, Ripley had better personality traits than Daniels. I found it difficult to see what kind of personality she was. She didn’t stand out as a personality like Ripley did. This is a reason why I hope that she will be better written in the next movie (the same goes for Tennessee). Hopefully they will be better written in the next movie (if we will get one).
