There hasn’t been a good alien movie since Alien 3 (what needs to be done?)

MemberNeomorphAug-14-2017 10:27 AMAlien 3 was made in 1992 and is my favorite movie in the franchise this far. You see how isolated the prisoners are and even though they have made nasty shit they come off as real characters. There are distinct traits between them (Golic, Morse, Dillon, Ripley). In AR it became a joke and I am not sure about what happened.
Prometheus was released in 2012 and the movie is sort of OK (2 of 5 from me) but there is so much stupid shit in that movie and so few good characters so it feels like a sad miss that could have been so much better. Alien Covenant was said to scare the hell out of people and would bring the Xeno back but what happened? Most of the characters were under-developed and it became about a mad android, which I dislike. David was better in Prometheus but was alright in Covenant but I don’t like the focus on a mad android at the expense of human characters. I probably prefer Covenant compared to Prometheus.
What do they need to do to get the next movie right or the franchise in general?

MemberOvomorphAug-14-2017 11:01 AMYou should make the next one I think so because you know better than Scott Ridley. You're the man to sort it

MemberTrilobiteAug-14-2017 11:07 AMI actually like Resurrection as a popcorn flick. I can agree on Prometheus , but Prometheus might seem better if Awakening shifts the focus in that direction and answers some of those questions.

MemberChestbursterAug-14-2017 11:22 AMI agree that prometheous and alien covenant were steps down from alien 3 but I thought that prometheous was still a great addition to the franchise that added tons of world building. alien covenant, Was also a desent addition to the franchise in my opinion.

MemberChestbursterAug-14-2017 12:21 PMI love Alien 3 but I wouldn't rank Prometheus and Covenant lower. Say what you will about the characters but they served their point, to prove that humanity is lacking and full of arrogant cunts lol Covenant less so of course but they are sheep grasping for resurrection. The David character is fascinating and it's a nice change of pace to have a synthetic the main focus as we've already had four films prior where the humans were the protagonist and the synthetics took a back seat. I'd prefer a synthetic antagonist/protagonist instead of the generic human one.

MemberChestbursterAug-14-2017 12:26 PM@Lawrence So agree. I think Prometheus is the second best movie in the series, beneath Alien. It is a thoughtful, sprawling, "world building" movie that is so rich, so elegant, so sophisticated, so smart, and so well done that it went over the heads of most movie goers who just wanted "Aliens" (aliens the movie AND xenomorph creatures), which, sadly caused it to confuse a lot of people who should've known better had they been paying attention.

MemberChestbursterAug-14-2017 12:29 PMStarlogger I concur. Prometheus is much more than what is on the surface and Covenant as well. They are works of art imo.

MemberChestbursterAug-14-2017 2:29 PMI would agree that Prometheus is the second best of the series as well. Covenant was good. Should have been great.

MemberDeaconAug-14-2017 4:09 PMI think it came down to trying to do something different.
Alien 3 had killed off Ripley, and so when returning back to the Franchise FOX felt they needed to return Ripley and the Xenomorph and had to come up with a way to do this, the movie was trying something New.. but Alien Resurrection got some things wrong and Ultimately was a Popcorn Flick where Characters was a bit more Goofy for some and some was not done so well... it was all a bit.... Super Hero Movie ish...
The Idea had some good things, but it was flawed, i never buy the whole Clone idea it was silly, i rather have them Clone her and have the failed clones and then a process where each new Clone they refine the process to separate Human/Xeno DNA.. i found the whole Cloned to be carrying a Xeno Queen flawed.
I think the same thing happened with each movie after, they had some good ideas, that just needed a better Script for them.

MemberPraetorianAug-14-2017 4:58 PMStarlogger agreed on Prometheus.
Come on, Resurrection wasn't that bad. It had a great visual style, some attitude, quirky broken characters.....and the Newborn.

MemberChestbursterAug-14-2017 5:40 PMIRaptus I concur. I actually liked Resurrection myself but can see why people don't. I love that Newborn abomination lol

MemberPraetorianAug-14-2017 7:29 PMLawrence of Arabia its a good film, and personally I think it has the best visual style of all the films. Its almost artistic.
I love that Newborn abomination lol
Yes! someone that gets it. Its a filthy, disgusting abomination. It is supposed to make you uncomfortable to look it. It's repulsive, and that's why it's awesome.

MemberFacehuggerAug-14-2017 7:42 PMI think there are really only 2 great Alien movies, being the first 2 they released. Alien 3 while I enjoy it is probably mediocre, and the series hasn't been able to rise above that since, resulting in the next 3 movies and the 2 AVP movies being either just as good as 3(which isn't a huge accomplishment to me) or worse.

I do prefer the Assembly Cut but the dog burst I felt was more emotional, no one wants to see a doggo perish :(

MemberOvomorphAug-15-2017 5:16 PMThe original and assembly cut of Alien 3 are my favs. Prometheus, Aliens, and Covenant all rank about the same after that.

MemberTrilobiteAug-15-2017 5:47 PMI think that Alien 3 is a great movie although it is tough to get motivated to watch since it is utterly depressing. Resurrection was very enjoyable and had some of the most disturbing scenes of the series at that point- the Ripley failed experiments room and Newborn and its death come to mind.

MemberFacehuggerAug-15-2017 8:23 PMAlien3 is one of the most depressing movie experience I ever had. Back then when I watched Alien3 the first time I didn't know the storyline at all. I just anticipated it so much after ALIENS, wanting to know how Ripley, Newt and Hicks going to be. I didn't have a chance to watch it in the theater back then until it showed on local TV in mid-90s. I was so excited and I bought a brand new VHS to tape it. What I remembered most then, was my anticipation completely shattered. I was angry, felt cheated and depressed. They killed off Newt and Hicks in the first 5 minutes and I was not prepared for it AT ALL. From that moment I've learned how brutal life could be. It was a thought provoking film, it changed my life.
