Soy Meat- You can only choose one synthetic for your crew. Who do you pick and why?
VivisectedEngineer
MemberChestbursterAug-20-2017 10:02 AMI would probably not choose Call nor any other Auton because I think they would be too likely to have their own self-righteous agenda and deviate from the mission.
It's a tough call between Walter and Bishop. They're both pretty self-sacrificing - Walter let his arm get bitten off to save Daniels and Bishop saved Newt from getting sucked into space even after he was torn in half.
I guess Walter did let his identity get stolen and the entire ship commandeered by a psychopath. ...Still, Bishop failed to detect that the Xeno queen had come on board and laid eggs.
Nevertheless, Walter's a little stodgy and stoic and at least Bishop shows some emotional reactions to things, and knows cool party tricks like the thing-with-the knife. I'm gonna have to go with Bishop.
Would anyone choose David or Ash???
(Also, I started writing this two days ago, when the "Off Meat" and "Red Meat" threads were posted, but my lap-top suddenly and permanently died in the middle of my comment. I know two days is like a decade in internet time but I finish what I start, gosh dammit! Also, I'm glad to be back from internet-less oblivion. :P )

MemberChestbursterAug-20-2017 3:29 PMYes, dk , Bishop was definitely good people.
Also, Alien 3 was actually just a nightmare with a really good plot (who doesn't love to have one of those, once in a while?).
Actually, Bishop is fine, he got repaired and he's top of the line again. No one can tell me differently.
*covers ears* LA LA LA! BISHOP IS JUST FINE! LA LA LA!

Indeed that was a Plot Device as a way they could bring in the Xenomorph back for a 3rd movie, after they must have assumed that LV-426 as far as Hadleys Hope and the Derelict are No More..
I think its something that could have been thought out more, but hey we get this a lot with the Franchise. And the Good thing with Potential Plot Holes is the debates they can lead us to..
The whole Bishop being undercover, and what if their was a second secret Synthetic and Mission on the Sulaco etc are some of the interesting debates had here over the years.
Alien Covenant however has maybe given some clues to explain this, if we now Assume Eggs can Start as Small and then will Grow until they reach a right size. So the reasons for why David has those Tiny Face Huggers, could also be used to suggest the Queen could still have a few New/Fresh Small Eggs that the Queen Planted on the Sulaco, that simply Grew.

MemberChestbursterAug-20-2017 3:44 PMI kid lol I'm just messing around cuz it is a theory floating out there :P I assumed it was the Queen anyway as a final precaution. Or maybe Bishop made you think he was preparing a ship! WOOOOOOOOOO!

MemberChestbursterAug-20-2017 3:46 PMI was actually quite sad for Bishop more than I was for Newts and even less so for Hicks. Bishop was my favorite character in Aliens, he was just a great guy. Like Walter :) Whenever I see people upset about their fates I see stuff like "My Newt and Hicks!1!1" and I'm over here "What about Bishop?!?!?" lol

MemberChestbursterAug-20-2017 4:02 PMAgreed! I do want Newt to be ok, though. If only because Bishop went to all that trouble of saving her despite clearly being in so much pain.
I would really hate for his efforts to be wasted. I feel like his sense of guilt and uselessness over his failure may have contributed to his feelings of resignation to non-existence.

MemberChestbursterAug-20-2017 4:05 PMThat's what I like about the Alien universe though, it's so nihilistic, everything is meaningless in the black void of space. I did love Bishop :(

MemberTrilobiteAug-20-2017 4:16 PMOK BigDave. You have spent 15 years training for a WY mission and the final task is to choose a synth to accompany you on the mission per WY Regulations. You have read the resumes and are at the 30 second window from departure. Failure to choose disqualifies you from the mission. Which android will you choose? tic toc tic toc lol!

MemberChestbursterAug-20-2017 4:26 PMIf BigDave doesn't choose, he's stuck with Ash!

MemberTrilobiteAug-20-2017 4:39 PMAs we await the decision, Walter and I are off to discuss Nietzsche's Overman while I learn the finer points of making an omelette vs scrambled eggs. Tah tah!

MemberChestbursterAug-20-2017 4:40 PMMy car was totaled recently. It's name was Lucky (my husband and I both tend to get emotionally attached to machines). My husband took me to the tow-yard and gave me a moment alone to say good-bye to it - it had been my first and only car and it had gotten me through a lot, so it was a very sentimental moment.
As I bid Lucky adieu, Bishop's ultimate fate popped into my head, and I realized I wasn't actually crying over Lucky at all, I was crying over Bishop. ...Which is ridiculous. But, I named my new car Bishop.
You are stuck with Ash. You have my sympathies. :)

That...sounds like a dangerous topic to discuss with a synthetic. Maybe don't put such ideas in his head?

I can admire your cruelty. It is after all your thread!
The Overman is a pretty cool read and could possibly allow Walter to think outside the box. It is essentially a story of always striving for perfection knowing it is ultimately impossible.
........or were you referring to making omelettes vs scrambled eggs?

^-^ Thanks!

Well...for a human, yes. ...Do we really want androids who think outside the box? Isn't that how we wound up with David? lol.

I was referring to the Nietzsche, lol. Though, as I'm a vegan, I see how my comment could have gone either way.

MemberTrilobiteAug-20-2017 5:00 PMI would trust Walter since he would learn as he went along with actual real world experience whereas David was born with everything including PW's ego. I like to think of Walter as being similar to Data- trying to understand and apply nuances of humanity instead of coming out of the gate feeling superior.
dk
MemberTrilobiteAug-20-2017 5:04 PMVivisectedEngineer It is a balance of skill and patience when an omelette becomes scrambled eggs. LOL!

Well, I wouldn't trust overly philosophical synthetics. Least of all around eggs -- I've learned from Oram's mistakes!

I am seriously questioning your ability to judge character. Hey, why don't you go very closely examine that large egg Walter and dk are working on over there? It's perfectly safe! I assure you!
@dk
You should probably remember to be extremely specific when dealing with A.I.
I.Raptus
MemberPraetorianAug-20-2017 5:28 PMowww poor Ash. No one wants him as their pet Synth :(
Is it perhaps because he was anti-social and somewhat creepy even before being revealed to a nefarious psychotic android??
dk
MemberTrilobiteAug-20-2017 5:31 PMVivisectedEngineer LOL! Fair enough. We work with only poultry eggs with shells that we physically crack and they do not open when near "the meat". I will remember to be specific to ask Walter for garlic powder and not a strange looking garlic "bulb".

MemberPraetorianAug-20-2017 7:18 PMI'm with Cosmonaut-Copper in choosing David 8.
I know I would be taking a chance on longevity but he has so much more to offer than the others. Yes, I would pour my own tea as well and be extremely respectful to David 8 at the pool table.
I would try to steer David 8 politically in order to just wipe out arrogant alien humanoids and leave the humans alone. And I would gladly go on movie binges with him and not laugh at him while he is playing with his hair.
VivisectedEngineer
MemberChestbursterAug-20-2017 8:22 PMWell, Dr. Shaw was kind and respectful towards David the entire time, and look where that got her.
VivisectedEngineer
MemberChestbursterAug-20-2017 8:38 PMLol, wasn't he though?
Ripley: "Ash, that transmission, MOTHER's deciphered part of it. It doesn't look like an S.O.S."
Ash: "What is it, then?"
Ripley: "Well, it looks like a warning. I'm gonna go out after them."
Ash (sounding annoyed and unsympathetic): "What's the point? I mean, by the, the time it takes to get there, you'll...they'll know if it's a warning or not, yes?"
Also, I like how synthetics have a habit of adding "Yes?" for confirmation at the end of a sentence, and Walter has the same idiosyncrasy.
