As divisive as "Prometheus" was, I don't think it ended up on anybody's "worst film" of the year list.
I don't understand. Looper's The Worst of 2017 list does not include Alien Covenant. Tragedy!
'As divisive as "Prometheus" was, I don't think it ended up on anybody's "worst film" of the year list.'
Without doubt, he is an exception:
Prometheus indeed spanked AC at the box office- no arguments there. I also did not see Prometheus on any top ten lists either. Here is the rub- it changes nothing for me- I still like AC way more than Ptometheus. Both movies have plenty of faults though.
Well. I am kinda surprised AC was on that screenjunkies list, specially with so many bad movies hitting theaters this year
Ati I know a lot of people didn't like Prometheus, I was referring to news outlets. It would be interesting to see whether Alien Covenant get as many nominations from Sci-fi and technical Awards as "Prometheus" did. According to imdb Prometheus got 47 nominations, including an Oscar nomination for best special effects. So far, AC was only nominated for its trailer.

here here joylitt, there was some bad ones.
Yes there were bad ones, but judging by her arguments was that the movie was a big disappointment. The studios forcing the Xenos in and Scott abandoning/nuking the Engineers (and the ones interested in them) in favor of the psycho AI. It was a case of great expectations and not delivering on them.
Even Kermode, who Liked Prometheus, featured Covenant in his worst movies of the first half of 2017 (at number 5 out of 10), citing that Life (the Alien rip-off) was more original than Covenant.
red0guy That is understandable, because Kermode is a fan of Alien in general. That is something I should have mentioned as well: from the point of view of a fan who is highly invested in the Alien lore and such, Alien Covenant is an extinction level event.
Art is subjective so, but I agree that Alien Covenant wasn't a very good movie.
"The studios forcing the Xenos in and Scott abandoning/nuking the Engineers (and the ones interested in them) in favor of the psycho AI."
That could be one of the explanations and yes I would rather have seen more of the Engineers instead of a crazy robot. It could actually have been an interesting movie if we would have seen more of the Engineer culture and related tings. AC would probably have been more interesting with more information about the Engineers and less AI.
"Alien Covenant is an extinction level event. "
Well, that is to exaggerate a bit but it wasn't a very good movie.
what realy bugs me is that screen junkies actually gave tis movie a positive review when it came out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02ZyJTS4yeY then once it left theators they all just suddenly started to dislike it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYT-BU3U0a4

Allow me to ignore somebody who believes Life was more original than Alien Covenant.
Since when do we give so much credit and of time to some youtube junkies?
I watch them sometimes but never feel the need to quote them. Really.
"He survived, he’s now in Disneyland in Orlando, and no way am I going back there. How did he end up in Disneyland? I saw him in Disneyland, Jesus Christ!"
daliens Well, Kermode is a film critic for the BBC. And he was not precisely praising "Life", he was just being ironic.
We don't have to agree with everything kermode says just because he is a film critic for the BBC.
I wonder, if he is an Alien fan, how he can say Alien Covenant is worst than Chips.
Whatever...
I don't care if some hate Alien Covenant. I really don't.
"He survived, he’s now in Disneyland in Orlando, and no way am I going back there. How did he end up in Disneyland? I saw him in Disneyland, Jesus Christ!"
Well sir, he has a phD in English with a thesis on horror fiction, so he might be more qualified than many on the subject. And how can he says that Chips is better than AC, maybe because he is subjective when comparing bad films for different reasons and because he is not an Alien Fundamentalist.
I choose to disagree with him on Alien Covenant.
I'm not impressed with the rest. Really, a phD in horror sci fi movies? Who's the snob here?
"He survived, he’s now in Disneyland in Orlando, and no way am I going back there. How did he end up in Disneyland? I saw him in Disneyland, Jesus Christ!"
Every film made in 2017 can be included in a 'The Worst Films of 2017' list, and the best film will be the last one of that list. :D
The fact is not everyone is a 100% Alien Franchise Fan, this is going to be a big problem moving forwards, because FOX cant bankroll $$$$$ movies purely on the appeal for the actual Fanbase, hence why Prometheus tried to do something different.
For people who are not die hard or even casual Alien Fans, Sadly Alien Covenant was not the same kind of Xeno Flick that the other Movies were, casual Fans and General Public would be like the Fanboys and associate a Alien Movie about Xenomorphs and Queens which Alien Covenant lacked... so when we take away the Xenomorph, we get a confusing movie about David, that most wont get or like unless they have seen Prometheus a number of times.
Alien Covenants Failings was it had to by-pass a lot of what Prometheus set up, but could not totally ignore it and so had to leave some scenes connected but done so in a brush under the carpet fashion. It then had to Shoe-horn in the Xenomorph and attempt to give us a Alien Feel.... while also try and give some Action more than Prometheus had... and Finally try and introduce something New.
Its a simply case of having to try and cover so much and please so many with such a limited running time and budget.
