Something feels off...

MemberPraetorianMarch 07, 2023With all the news on the upcoming tentatively titled ALIEN Romulus I figured it's high time I got back on here to share some gripes. I know quit griping but I like griping.
For the first time ever I find myself curiously unexcited about an Alien movie, and no it has nothing to do with Covenant, Prometheus etc. I usually find myself bending over backwards defending everything from Alien 3 all the way to Covenant (except the AVP's...to hell with those). Something about Romulus just feels off and I can't exactly pinpoint any one reason but instead a multitude of reasons.
One reason is Fedé Alvarez. While I think his work on Evil Dead 2013 and Don't Breathe are very solid...he just seems I'll fit. Not to mention just about everything his name has been on post 2016 has been rough, The Girl in the Spider's Web as well writing and producing Don't Breathe 2 and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022.
Next would be the casting and more so the leaked rehearsal footage. The casting so far is largely young unknowns which is by no means a bad thing. Casting relatively unknown actors did work in Prey's favor. The leaked rehearsal footage which seems legitimate though does showcase some painfully forced and modern sounding dialogue. Case in point.
And now the synapse for the film is very....basic. An emphasis on young people encountering the Alien. Ok. I imagine Disney wants it to appeal to a new audience with this focus on young people. Understandable I suppose. We're certainly not getting any younger.
And that brings me to the gigantic elephant In the room... Disney. Goes without saying they've done a bang up job on Star Wars and even Marvel is down in the dumps. Not to mention Alien content released under Disney, namely the Marvel comics, have been underwhelming to say the least. Even the game Aliens Fireteam Elite comes with a forgettable story and cringe Worthy dialogue that often sounds like something from an MCU film.
I really hope I'm wrong, I really do. Prey was really good and what's interesting is I was actually excited for that and often found myself defending it from those quick to dismiss it early on when it was under the working title Skull. I'm a big predator fan but I care way more about Alien. Infinitely more. Maybe that's why. I really just hope we're getting a film worthy of being called Alien and not a gory Sci Fi slasher where some Xenomorph XX121 mame 20 something's for 2 hours. Maybe I'm overthinking it. Maybe I'm just getting old and cynical. Anyone else feel this way or is it just me?
