yeah I agree GAME OVER would be a much more effective line with nice throwback
It was ok, I just thought there were too many callbacks to other Alien movies and media. It was a bit much, and what I was worried about when I saw the first trailer.
They really took from everything too. The Rook/Ash callbacks are from two stories that have come out in the past 10 years. One is a story with Ash uploading his consciousness into the escape pod Ripley used, the other is a backstory for Bishop, where he encounters another Bishop model named Rook. (I posted links to the stories if anyone wants to read them)
They had the boys crawling through the vents like Bishop did in Aliens, and using Alien:Isolation style distraction flares.
Even the "vagina/vulva" Xenomorph cocoon/birth concept isn't original, it's similar to Sil's cocoon from the movie Species. So, probably a callback to that as well given Giger was heavily involved in creating the creature effects for the movie.
The nostalgia bait isn't a bad thing per se, there's just way too much of it, in my opinion.
Things I really enjoyed were the first part of the film, when they were on the planet/star mining colony, I thought it was the strongest and most interesting part of the whole movie. I loved Andy and Rain's relationship, would 110% watch a movie just about them. I also really liked how we finally got an answer as to what Weyland-Yutani was after with the Goo and Xenos. And I honestly loved seeing Ash again, even though it technically wasn't him.
What I really didn't like is the Xenos were so underpowered, case in point when Andy goes up against one, he should have been burned by all the acid, yet he wasn't. I also did not really like the "Baby" at the end, it was jarring and felt out of place.
As is tradition, the Android was the best part of the movie, lol. I'd watch it again, it was a decent "popcorn" movie. I give it a generous 7/10.
there are lots of fans service but I saw there are also lots of new elements which we never seen before.
1. Alien Isolation vibe
2. Alien evolving from the chestbuster
3. Facehugger sensing of temperature
4. Gravity concept
5. Baby human-alien
This movie gives me All-you-can-eat vibe. Not exquisite for every dishes but everything is satisfying lol.
The only way to justify that classic Ripley line is if Fede would mention that it was just another bad joke from Andy (in a sort of breaking the fourth wall intention) which would make sense considering how awkward he talks sometimes and how off his jokes really were delivered.
Officially one of my favorite characters in the franchise btw. Hopefully he'll return.
Andy saying "Get away from her you... Bitch" after shooting the Scorched Xeno was cheesy ngl. If only he said something like "Game over" but that's just me.
"The "Get Away From Her, you B" line was a little bit weird lol. It was funny and a nice homage but is it necessary? Especially given the timeline. Ripley iconic line is supposed to be her own invention lol. "
Yeah, I didn't understand this dialogue. Did they know this xeno was female? Did I miss something? If they'd watched it laying eggs maybe the line would work? ?
I almost forgot the Alien saving Rain scene lol. Totally unexpected. I was like oh no how could Rain save herself and now she owns the Xenomorph a thank you.
I love the film a lot. I am mostly impressed with the design, light setting. It's such a beautiful art presentation in horror genre.
Spoiler alert below:
Pros:
I love the opening so much, the quietness and then the music gives me total 2001 Space Odyssey vibe. So well made.
I love the first act most. It gives me Fincher's vibe and the dystopian setting is beautifully made.
I am so glad Ash (Rook) made a comeback. This is what I wanted most since I heard this film was in pre-production stage. I am surprised how much he is involved in the movie though lol. I prefer Ash more calming, mysterious character though. Rook is a little pushy and speak too fast. Nevertheless I enjoy his comeback.
The chestburster born scene up to Kay die scene is the BEST of the film. Love the Xenomorph forming and acid killing, and then the scene Kay trying to escape with the Alien lurking. Give me 100% Alien Isolating vibe.
Gravity concept is so creative. I love how this works so well from being a joke then being one of the most creative way to kill those Aliens.
Rain + Andy relationship. Human went back and save the android is kick ass.
Third Act is a nice surprise. I love the first shot showing the human-alien after Rain was shocked in horror. An unforgettable scene to me.
Cons:
I feel the movie is lacking the tempo. Every scene is greatly executed but the tension wasn't build up. The spaceship was going to crash but I did not feel the rush and care much.
The "Get Away From Her, you B" line was a little bit weird lol. It was funny and a nice homage but is it necessary? Especially given the timeline. Ripley iconic line is supposed to be her own invention lol.
After all I enjoy the film a lot. I would rank it my 4th most favourite of all. I am just so grateful we have another Alien film after 7 years. Not the most satisfying experience but it's totally not disappointed (that is important). It's not easy to revive the Alien creatures after so many films but Romulus still gives us great nostalgia plus new elements and interesting timelines. It's a dream comes true.
I'd give it a score of 85
This excessive fan service is exactly what many of us feared Neill Blomkamp would bring to his Alien movie, and we got it anyway!
Excellent write up!
Pretty much nailed how I feel.
"CGI-Ash face aside"
I think this might have worked if Rook was damaged (slurred speech, slow movements, a damaged eye, etc..). .....But this might be due to the family/estate wishes? ( "he has to be recognizable!" )
I usually don't call for fan edits...But this one I do.
fan edit cuts I want as an Alien fan ( just a small sample size):
Dialogue:
"Get away from her you bitch!"
"I prefer the term artificial person myself"
"The perfect organism"
"Is that all you got!"
If I knew nothing of the Alien verse' then this movie was awesome!
I'd like to hear from BigDave, I hope he is okay.
I agree with everything mentioned.
The space station should've been in a stable orbit, and something they did caused the collision with the rings. The 1970s monitors were a mistake – you can't go back. It's like the "real humans in monster suits, no CGI!" thing; it's just fan service.
There are probably a hundred things I would've changed. "Prometheus" didn't rely on fan service, which angered fans (except for the Deacon at the end). So Fede and the team must've been paying attention to Reddit and Alien forums. This movie should've been an Alien fan's dream.
But ultimately, considered on its own without the franchise baggage, I still think it was good.
Didn't like it either. In a topic which I started a few days ago I summarize a few things that bothered me.
https://www.alien-covenant.com/topic/52059
I'm sure the Offspring has Engineer DNA, I think they made it clear: they found the black goo ampules on LV-223.
The decline in space horror movies started with James Cameron's "Aliens." He made the xenomorphs mortal, easily killed with a pulse rifle. They went from being otherworldly, Lovecraftian space monsters to just dumb space bugs.
This removed the terror and scare factor. After 40 years of watching horror, violence, and sex on screen, I'm desensitized. "Alien" in 1979 set a high bar, and little shocks me now.
This makes movies incredibly difficult to produce. Most will fail in some way.
Did not like it. Fede heats a leftovers soup that could only take the franchise in the worst direction since AVP. I think if you ask Fede, he would happily make another AVP too, he probably has the pitch already.
Not worthy of the 7 years wait since Covenant.
Super Dumb movie. Not even one original addition to the Alienverse.
Dumb script, probably the dumbest of all. Fede, you better let others do the script, you should probably resume to scripting those film where the characters do not speak, silence is wiser sometimes, nothing to be ashamed of.
I am not the kind of fan who likes everything that has xeno traces in it.
What has become of the perfect organism? Being humiliated by a bunch of kids and a retarded android the same way Andy (short from android, hey Fede, is this movie for kiddos only?) has his ass kicked by some bullies while Rain was trying to convince the WY emmigration clerk she is old enough to see the sun light.
Did not feel a second the outer space, just inside a poorly illuminated basement.
Why so many facehuggers and xenos, where did they come from? Strenght of the xeno does not lie in numbers unless tou dumbing it down. Did Fede never asked himself why Ridley used one xeno at a time? Probably not.
Overall this film was like a cheap dumb AI generated production, with bits and pieces from the quadrilogy and the prequels, an unnecessary mess from beginning to the end, that can probably please a popcorn munching, immature audience.
4/10
Thought it was just as good as any of them. Just a different symphony.
Less fan service and it would have been amazing!
Andy and Rain were excellent. More please.
Offspring was cool.
Not sure I would have sucked it into space....Probably I'd have just released the cargo bed with him in it and watch as it slammed into the belt maybe ejecting him so the Offspring would stay alive in the asteroid belt and haunt future ice collectors.
It's supposed to be the perfect breed and be able to survive in space?
I Liked it. The fan service was a bit much and I wouldn't mind a fan edit where Rook is on the monitor only.
Popcorn movie. Felt like a Netflix production ( not really a bad thing ). I can see why it was headed to HULU. Budget seemed..Low? The must have saved a bundle on the actors salary. But the actors really knocked it out of the park.
I really want to see more of Rain and Andy. A comic or novel would be fine...but another movie would be cool. (David Jonsson as Andy was brilliant.) and a sequel on Yvaga would be fantastic! More of the DNA monsters.
Soundtrack was good...have to listen again.
Editing was great.
Plot was good. Loved that the station was used for something other than more xenos.
8/10
Chris,
OK, Will try to eleborate. But dont read if you have not seen the movie. Trying to be spoiler free though.
did not like all throwbacks to past Alien films. Why would I want that? Even saying ”stay away from her you bitch”. Why? I can just watch the old movies. Dont need to see or hear the same thing in a new movie.
I was not scared a single time but that is OK.
Was never ever on edge or feel excited by anything I saw.
Did not like the acting in general nor the actors except for the female lead. She is really good.
The surprise ending and what showed up…no thank you. Had enough of that in Alien Res.
Too many aliens all over the place. Did not like a single action scene.
My wife laughed at the film when it was done. I Said it was OK (she knows I love the Alien movies) since I did not like it either.
I really dont want to see it again and I have watched all prior movies tons of times for the past 35 years.
But I am very happy for the fans here that enjoyed it.
Mediocre/good but I did enjoy it. It's beautiful, faithful to a lot of elements from the original films and the scenes are very well shot. Some scenes are really tense, the acting is good overall and the soundtrack was beautiful. What brings the score down mostly imo is the emphasis on fan-service. I'd rank it along Alien Resurrection (which I like) but under Alien 3 Assembly Cut.
Still give it a 7/10 and I'll happily rewatch it on streaming services later on. It's a feast to the eye and I sincerely hope we'll get an extended version.
It reminded me a lot of Alien Resurrection and the Newborn. Both final surprise ending acts in the crew's ship, tall pale curious humanoid monster, and it being sucked out into the vacuum of space.
The size of that fucker

I really enjoyed the film, I wasn't expecting a masterpiece. A decent entry in the franchise.
I'm planning on seeing it again.
Really?? I'm surprised by this! I've only been seeing positive reviews so far, can you elaborate on what was lacking / misleading by the trailers that led to your score?
Totally agree with your points, except the rating, that's way too high.
The script was lame, on par with Prometheus, no memorable line, nothing.
The characters were not developed at all, I could not care less if they died.
Andy (short for Android, you get it) is the most annoying robot in the franchise, a little retarded, like the jokes he's throwing, gets an upgrade that tells him his ultimate priority is to serve WY, but he is not really convinced, still showing a streak of goodness.
And why on earth did Fede use Ian Holm, especially since he passed not so long ago? This was not a homage, it felt like an insult, a desecration.
I never expected this film to be so idiotic, I said in another post that i feel it is The Predator of the Alien franchise.
To quote Forrest Gump, stupid is as stupid does.
***SPOILERS***
They went to far including Ash ("Rook") to the extent that he became a main villain. While I don't mind the idea of an android puppet master, they could've used another actor. If only he was shown briefly in the background for a second or two, deactivated and taking no room in the plot, it would be much better for the film imo. Sneaky callbacks at most, rather than shoving nostalgia right in your face.
***SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER***
Yeah the CGI-generated Ash was propably the largest let-down in the whole movie. I don't understand it! They've put so much effort in builind original sets and puppets and stuff and then they ruin it all with the chrapest and badest CGI-animation of the year...
***major spoiler***
4/10, just because somehow it did not make me leave the theater. Although when I saw the clone of Ash I wanted to leave. This film feels like a cheap dumbing down AI generated remix of the first four plus something from the prequels, kissing every possible ass to make the dumbest fans happy.
I will probably not waste my time to watch it again.
I suspect that, being asked for advice, Ridley told Fede: Give them shit and keep them in the dark! Which he did, literally.
Ridley's sweet revenge for not being let to make the sequel to Alien Covenant.
The negative reviews from Rotten Tomatoes are too polite, for me Alien Romulus is worse than Resurrection. More like The Predator of the Alien franchise. I simply don't understand how Ridley could endorse it.
Yeah 7/10 is a good way to put it. I'll definitely watch it again though (through streaming) because it's certainly not a boring film despite the style-over-substance approach (later acts)
I agree. If I would have to summon it up in one sentence, I would say: It felt more like a fan service than an original story. Parts of it were promising or outright good. Other parts were shallow or even made no sense. All in all I'm dissappointed because yet again there was much wasted potential - just as in AC. 7/10 feels appropriate. It's a shame... Nevertheless I will watch it again, since it's Alien after all :)
Hoppades själv på att filmen skulle återskapa magin som Fury Road gjorde för Mad Max men nej, det blev i princip enbart en hyllning till Alien filmerna på gott och ont. Godkänd i mitt tycke. Skrev en recension här med mina första intryck.
Hoppas inte!! Haha snart dags!!
Jag är lite nervös att frugorna ska få någon slags panikattack och lämna biografen…
23 hours until Alien Romulus!!!
Definitely. Both have their pros and cons affected by time, budget and/or talent for the craft but if I had to pick between only CGI or practical xenos I'd prefer the latter given how effective it works in the alien franchise. I do however prefer polished and convincing CGI spaceship scenes and 3D backdrops compared to models and matte paintings despite the nostalgic charm. From all the the bits and pieces I've gathered so far about Romulus, it seems to be right up my alley. 4 days left! If the release date is August 16th for you I'll let you know how the experience was in a spoiler-free first impression post!
CGI when given enough time can look spectacular (Planet of the Apes 2011-2024 films), but a lot of times it looks mid to bad because VFX/CGI artists aren't given enough time and room to breathe in. The same thing goes for practical effects, when done right it looks spectacular. If not, it can look goofy, at least in my own opinion.
