Disney originally pushed back against that Alien: Romulus final act reveal

While Alien: Romulus continues to earn a respectable return at the global box office this week, the film has left the Alien fanbase once again divided. One major controversial aspect of the film was its final act and the creature it revealed. We're of course talking about the Offspring - the Xenomorph / Engineer / Human hybrid Kay gives birth to near the end of the film.

Unsurprisingly, it's come to light that Disney was not originally keen on the idea, but despite fans initially assuming the Offspring was a Ridley Scott note, it appears Fede Alvarez was the one eager and adamant to include the creature.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, director Fede Alvarez addresses the choice to include the Offspring, despite Disney's initial attempts to push back against it:

As one might expect, Álvarez received some respectful opposition to this unsettling choice from 20th Century and Disney, but that’s precisely when he knew he was on the right course. After all, he’d been through similar situations on Evil Dead (2013) and Don’t Breathe (2016).

“They did [push back] at the beginning [with regard to the Offspring], but not because they didn’t like it. They just thought, ‘Is it too much? Do we really have to go there?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, now that you said that we shouldn’t, I know that I will,’” Álvarez reveals. “If you’re given an Alien movie by a corporation that is owned by Disney and they immediately say, ‘Yeah, let’s make it,’ then you are failing somehow. So we really pushed it to the limit, and I’m glad we did.”

The Offspring is arguably the most controversial addition to Alien lore so far, many fans likening it to the Newborn Alien from Alien: Resurrection. However, it does solidify a link and inspire more intrigue for the expanse of the Alien mythology Ridley Scott attempted to do with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. An expansion many are now finding a new appreciation for as time goes on.

The addition of the Offspring was definitely a good move. Cosmic horror, whether executed poorly or well, remains cosmic horror, and I believe it was done well in this film.

Regarding the final act:

The crew escaping a crashing/self-destructing spaceship is a common action/suspense movie trope. It's reminiscent of Ripley narrowly escaping the Nostromo without having to deal with a stowaway.

In Aliens, they also escaped the exploding base while facing the Queen (with many fan theories about how she got onboard). If Alien fans truly cared about continuity, they would have questioned how the Newborn ended up on the Betty. In contrast, there's no question how the Offspring got onboard in this movie, so that's a point in favor of "Romulus," I suppose.

The Offspring is definitely a nice surprise. I knew there was a third act but didn't realize it was another new creature (I thought it was Andy having some secrets behind or Ash comeback at the end lol).

I am not particularly fond of how it was killed but I have to say it was done beautifully (especially how Rain pulling back from Space which gives me 100% ALIEN ISOLATION vibe). I do wish the ending would show Ripley's Narcissus continuing her journey, linking how it leads to the beginning of ALIENS.

It was creepy looking no doubt and unexpected but I wished it was a xenomorph that snuck onboard because we didn't see them enough in the film imo. If the film was 30-45 mins longer with plenty of xeno horror I'd appreciate the offspring inclusion more.

It was certainly a disturbing looking creature, like out of a nightmare.  I liked that it tied to the engineers.

I really liked the Offspring, It was like a much smarter and healthier version of the Newborn. The Newborn looked like it was going to kill over at any second.

I kinda agree with them tbh, it was the weakest part of the movie for me personally. I could have done without it.
