But wait a minute, who are the Imdb stuff to care about their opinion? Sure they run a movie related site, but the main shtick of the site is that people vote and review movies.

I am pretty sure "Prometheus" would have made the list. I don't understand how a movie released 5 years before can be so superior on the visual department, and I am not just referring to the special effects: I am also talking about cinematography (color palette) and production design. And I agree about "It", someone should have mentioned that movie. But it is also weird they did not mention "Dunkirk".

@joylitt

You make a good point.  Interesting to hear about luring Fassbender.  He's great in the Alien franchise and I'm sure he has other offers for other movies, so I guess I could believe there could have been a lure going on.

Still, wouldn't Fassbender have to sign some kind of contract insuring he would do the sequels to the prequels he agreed to start if the story needed his role to continue?  I would imagine that is how it is normally done when a someone wants to make a series of movies and not just one.  That way they can guarntee their story.

I wasn't dissatisfied with Alien: Covenant, yet I was left disappointed.  Long story short here, but, as a movie as a whole, Alien: Covenant wasn't bad.  It just didn't deliver where it should have, which would be what the whole Alien franchise is about.  AKA.... The Xeno and fear.  I wasn't upset with the story though.  OH yea!  The switch was badly done.  Pathetic really.  The novel's ending was by far superior to what was released in the theater.

I do 100% agree that Bladerunner 2049 should be on that list.  Fabulous movie!  I mean it was just top notch, grade A material.  I am in love with that movie.  I saw it in theaters and I'm telling you, "That movie really had some great ideas."  One, in particular, was very inspirational to me and it was so well done in the movie.  The idea being the exploration of AI and love and the movie just played with your mind on that topic and really makes you think about our actually technology and what is possible.  It's a really amazing theme to explore and Bladerunner nailed it!  100%!  Bladerunner 2049 was just a fantastic movie overall and delivered much better than Alien: Covenant.

A part of the problem with Alien: Covenant is that, even though I avoided almost all spoilers, I still had expectations and at least some where not met, as I explained above.  With Bladerunner 2049, I had no clue what to expect.  A part of that was because Bladerunner 2049 was a sequel from nowhere!  I avoided spoilers and I had no clue how it would tie into the original.  I would have to say that Bladerunner 2049 was the best sequel that I can remember seeing that took place many years after the original.  Star Wars: Rogue One would have to come in 2nd on that one.  I have my reasons for that.  Bladerunner 2049 was a grand slam!!!!!

Get Out was a great movie, yet it doesn't compare to Bladerunner 2049!  Of course, it is a completely different type of movie and it was strange in its own category as well.  So, it is definitely rememberable for that.  I could see why it's on the list... kind of...

Baby Driver was good, sure.  Wonder Woman, I guess.  Logan..., well, I'm tired of the X-men and was never really a fan.  The Big Sick was alright and funny, okay, fine...  I hate Lip Sync Battle.

The other shows or movies I haven't seen.

NOW... what should be on that list is the movie IT.  Fabulous movie.  Hard to compare to the ones that I raved about above because it is so different, but, really, I loved that movie.  I would have to say you need to see it in theaters to really respect it though, but we'll see when it comes out on DVD.  I'm definitely going to see IT: Chapter 2 in theaters.  I think it's going to be worth it.

So, back to the thread.  I can understand why Alien: Covenant is not on the list, yet, if it was, I may understand, but I'm not 100% certain though.  If Prometheus came out in 2017, than I would imagine that Prometheus would be on the list.  It was a fabulous movie, yet it had its share of flaws.  Still, I'm glad it was made.  I've watched Prometheus many times because it has a high replay value to me.  Once you know the story, you can just admire the beautiful imagery and science fiction.  Alien: Covenant is kind of lacking in science fiction in a way compared to other Alien movies.  I guess they got all the science in at the beginning by confusing everyone with what a neutrino burst is.

Still, I am excited to see what Alien: Awakening is going to bring with the facts about Fox and Ridley Scott.

A comment from https://www.quora.com/Why-does-Star-Wars-take-place-a-long-time-ago-in-a-galaxy-far-far-away :

'We tend to view science fiction movies as if they all must take place in the future.

However, the universe is nearly 15 billion years old. Our entire solar system and its planets are relative newcomers to the universe… it was formed about only about 4.6 billion years ago. And the human race didn’t arrive until VERY recently. In fact, earth spent 99.999% of its existence without humans present.

But the time it took for our little planet to form and spawn life is absolutely NOT an indicator for how long it may have taken elsewhere. Entire space-faring civilizations could have risen to galactic glory and fallen to dust long before the earth ever formed. We simply have no way of knowing.

So Star Wars may have all taken place a thousand years ago… or a million years ago… or a billion. Lucas never pinned it down. But he did say that it wasn’t in our galaxy. There’s many billions of galaxies, so anyone’s guess is as good as the next one.

The fact that Star Wars has “humans” or a human-like species could either be coincidental… or it could be due to the story being portrayed by earth people… or it could mean that some of them eventually made it through intergalactic space and found their way here.

NOTE: Battlestar Galactica was another sci-fi series that starts a long time ago. It’s a bit of an epic saga, but they eventually reach earth… about 160,000 years ago (which was quite clever, as the first appearance of homo sapiens on earth took place around that time).'

A beast is so called that for a reason, although human beings are proving everyday that "homo sapiens" don't actually apply.

The very first beast is smart, but lacks every sense of preserving life, but its own - which we just can't apply to every single "homo sapiens", let alone real human beings.

So, (if we follow xenomorph=creator & engineers=creation), how come a creator lacks the very same motive for creating? It doesn't make sense.

And, amazing enough, the guys up here who get to even consider the primary issue on this post... Well, they are the ones who don't like AI imersed in the Alien universe at all.

How come?

First of all: "Au Revoir Shoshanna" - AMAZING! Quentin 4EVER...

And I also enjoyed your approach when you said, "to spell better this word (COVENANT) we need to eliminate the ship from the meaning." A great start for a post, when you actually mean it - as I noticed, afterwards, you meant it.

Among other great insights, I would stick to two words you used for DAVID (absolutely properly, my personal opinion): courage and madness.

As DAVID is an AI, can he ever escape from his most basic origins (us)? And isn't he a perfect mirror of his creators' lack of sense (although he was supposed to have a "computer sense" above everything else)?

So, I think that whoever survives COVENANT (if so) will face what we were primarily born to face (even if this means facing an AI): US.

And wouldn't it be so typical of us (human beings) to create something that will ultimately kill us (so far, the "perfect organism")?

Great post, thanks!

with respect to its end survival , what would it be like a fan if its iconic character does not die, but survives in exile for eternity until the death of universe heat or memory loss like the senile dementia of Android (The beginning of a wrong note will lose the whole symphony).
we might remember that David is already dead or at least has touched the exile in Prometheus , that feather of salvation was thanked for Shaw.

How lucky David was! Instead of a returning engineer ship he got the Covenant first. So he could practice martial arts on his own little brother. I doubt the second time he left Walter with anything repairable. But who can tell for sure?

I still cannot be sure if the AI on board the Covenant is wearing David's or Walter's body.

David said the engineers banished the wolf. What if the derelict was one of the ships that removed the already created eggs from an engineer world (like we do with the dangerous waste)? They realized it might get out of their control so they decided to move it elsewhere.

Maybe they could not destroy it on their own planet due to the acid blood, or they did not want to do any damage to their environment or even were afraid that something might go wrong during the process (it eventually happened to the SJ).

If that is a plausible scenario it would not be difficult to show it in the next film, as a flashback even.

BigDave

For the Engineers to take David's creation and use it as a weapon to gain revenge on mankind who destroyed, through their creation, Paradise but fail seems very convoluted given they know the black goo. Why not just take the black goo on LV 223 of to Earth.

For David to finally gain a soul and some kind of morality and then be busted feels much more likely simply because the pre equals are based around David. To go to all the trouble of straight lining him into A C and then side lining him in A W would be another twist.

I definitely don't want to see Walter's return. We are not talking about a freaking Star Trek episode. This is freaking Alien lol. There are much more compelling characters (not to mention full civilizations) that have been erased in the blink of an eye for plot convenience or in a commercial gamble; so why bring back Walter, a pretty blank canvas of a character. On top of that, I heard someone say that Walter was solely created to lure Fassbender back into the franchise, since he was not very enthusiastic about repeating the David role unless it represented some kind of challenge for him.

BigDave - :DDDDDDDDD

Yes, no doubt, Snoke is the father of the Engineers.

Another theory:

'In the posts algomeysa stated that at the end of empire the star wars galaxy looks like Andromeda. I have a thoery that supports that claim. Now bear with me on this.

On August 17th, 1885 Ludovic Gully first observed supernova SN1885A in the Andromeda galaxy.
in the Expanded Universe book Dark Apprentice by Kevin J. Anderson, Kyp Durron used the sun crusher to cause the star Caridan to supernova.

Scientists believe that SN1885A to have been 2,600,000 light years away. As many are aware aliens of the same type as E.T were in phantom menace. E.T claimed to be from 3,000,000 light years away.

Assuming SN1885A and Caidan were the same event and considering where Dark Apprentice is in the Star Wars timeline I place episode 4, a new hope to have taken place August 17, 2,598,126 B.C.'

BigDaveAlien: Covenant ForumThe Facilities on LV-223

Indeed chli

The place was Terra-formed to some degree, the Atmosphere outside was Hostile to Humans but not the Engineers, thats if we take this unused Scene as Canon.

A Question to ask if we take this image as Canon, would be CAN those Engineer/Beings on Planet 4 had survived on LV-223.

The Answer to this would be interesting as it would certainly be a good reason why the Temple Complexes had been Terra-formed.

The other Logical Reason would be so Humanoid Creations or any other Creations the Engineers Experiment on (that require a Earth like Atmosphere) would be able to Survive.   It is why for a long time, my conclusion in regards to LV-223 was a Watchers Outpost/Nursery aka Greenhouse where they Evolved and Tested their Creations (included Mankind).

But this was way way prior to AC, and after AC this can still apply, but also it could now be that LV-223 is where the Engineers Hierarchy would come and collect those beings on Planet 4 and maybe take them to LV-223 to be Sacrificed.

@Critters5

Indeed it would seem that to get from AC to Alien with just one Movie would mean things would have to become very contrived (Forced) into a single movie, much like all the Things AC was trying to cover simply was too much to do justice in a under 2hr 45 min Movie.

But then going for a TWO movie route where the next one deviates from the Plan too much, which is if David Creates the Xenomorphs, we have yet to see how they end up in Thousands (Eggs) on the Derelict.

Then should the next movie disappoint, it could leave the Franchise Dead in the Water without us arriving at a conclusion.

Cheers Critters5 i have 1-2 ways i would deal with it all....  lets just see if Logan is just as imaginative

@murnau

Excellent Points...  indeed RS is getting Old, and i think FOX either should give RS Full Reigns... or have someone else come in and use their ideas so if the next movie disappoints and least we can figure where it went wrong.

I think RS and Logan had a rough idea where to take us next, Logan had apparently had a draft finished at the time AC was released, but then another interview claimed they are working on it... But all comments seem to hint at seeing the Next Installment in 2019 which would be fitting with the 40th Anniversary of Alien.

But for this to be TRUE.. we would have to start hearing  some more News/Pre-Production by Spring 2018 as in One Interview made after the Pre-showings of AC he said that they would be shooting within 14 months which is July 2018

But the Reaction to AC may have prompted them to look at a few changes.

Reply
BigDaveAlien: Covenant ForumAliens First

I think there is a chance for just that. (Time for Engineers to come into play).

You see Critters5 if we look at the set up, we have David in charge of the Covenant Space Craft, which will take 7.5 years to Origae-6, now i think having Origae-6 being a World that has Humanoids already there would be a bit of a coincidence, especially if they are Engineers or Humans.

So i can safely assume David has NO access to a Engineer Ship when he arrives at Origae-6... HOWEVER Ridley Scott had said that there would be 3-4 incoming Parties ONE of which are the ENGINEERS who return to Planet 4 and Discover what has happened, and they wont be best pleased and would want to hunt down who ever caused this.

So its Safe to Assume Engineers will arrive at very least, and its via their Actions that is where the Derelict comes from, be it.

1) A Engineer Juggernaught AKA Derelict that Goes to Origae-6 then heads to LV-223.

2) A Engineer Ship/ or David some other way ends on LV-223 and this is where the Derelict is obtained.

Ridley Scott mentioned the Derelict is hundreds of years older/newer than the Juggernaught, if he plans to keep to this to show why they appear a bit different, then this leaves it VERY OPEN for the Derelict Ship to be a incoming Engineer Related Ship.

BBY = before the battle of Yavin, ABY = after the battle of Yavin (battle of Yavin = Star Wars Episode IV)

Article published on 8 November 2017:

Thanks to the opening titles, we all know that the ‘Star Wars’ movies happened ‘a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…’. But how long is ‘a long time ago’ exactly? All a bit nebulous isn’t it. Well no longer. Thanks to Georgetown University assistant professor Patrick Johnson, we’re a bit nearer to working it out.

In an excerpt from his book ‘The Physics of Star Wars: The Science Behind a Galaxy Far, Far Away’ published in Wired, Johnson appears to made a breakthrough.

“The best theories that we have indicate that our universe is about 13.7 billion years old,” he writes.

“Assuming the Star Wars galaxy is in our universe, we need a few indicators to determine when in our universe’s history Star Wars could occur.”

From here, he takes into consideration a few factors, from the age of our universe, the age of the galaxies in our universe, formed a billion years ago after the ‘big bang’, and when single cell organisms began to evolve into ‘fully formed multicellular organisms’.

All really basic stuff.

“Altogether, this means that Star Wars needs to be at least 9 billion years after the big bang. This leaves plenty of years before the current time (about 4.7 billion to be precise), so it could still count as ‘a long time ago,’ but it is certainly closer to now than to the big bang,” he continues.

So roughly speaking, Luke, the Empire and the rise of Darth Vader all happened around five billion years ago.

:)
