he cant make films whos timeline r within the alien franchise an expect to write out or ignore the beast. before he even started Prometheus he should have distanced himself from the beast if that was his intent farther down the road. he could have said he was exploring the influence of A.I and the company within the franchise rather than what he did say. hes out of touch with the franchise and doesn't understand what makes the fans watch the movies over and over again. I said ages ago on here when people were discussing who should replace him and id love to see Del Toro have a crack. a fresh mind and eye is what is needed now I believe.

In the beginning AVP was very supportive to Ridley Scott, in the same way this forum and the youtube channels were. But everybody's patience wore thin as Ridley Scott continues to fail to convince us with his statements that there is anything exciting in the horizon for the Alien franchise. For a change, I wish he would be talking about the genre and the tone and the human factor in his next project, those are the things he needs to work on.

bigdave. I have heard the rumour of a covenant prequel very similar to what u mention above. its focused on the mission and someones desire to sabotage it. in truth, if this is the case, ill not be watching. that's not what the alien universe is about. if he wanted to explore the diversities of A.I, he should have done it well away from the franchise. he should have done something new and original. oh wait, he did Bladerunner. the alien franchise is about the beast. ok tone the beast down a bit in one of the movies and explore the engineers with a taste of the beast but to ditch it all for David's or the companies story? not for me. im actually really gutted and deflated by what RS is doing to the franchise. I can see myself just disregarding AC and follow up films and just look at the franchise as alien through to Prometheus and sit in hope that someone with passion and vision for the franchise comes along and takes off from where Prometheus left off. it isn't perfect but it laid the foundations for the sequel to be an epic. I am actually asking myself as I type, ''how the hell could someone as talented screw the sequel up soooo badly when it was laid on a plate for them''

the point made in the podcast is well founded. for Ridley to claim the beast is cooked smells of lack of imagination where its concerned as a video game got it bang on. if a video game can do it, following pretty much a path that has already been done, why cant a man of the talent such as Ridley not be able to unless he has no passion for it or doesn't know what to do with it?

I think the Alien saga will always be remebered and studied for having two of the most memorable (and maybe best) films in cinema history as well as being the prime exmaple of what a saga/franchise/any sequel or prequel comes to.

Money, creativity, nostalgia/callbacks, and new blood. There are actually plenty of single prequels or sequels that manage to, at least, adequately balance those factors, but so many franchises just suffer from the balance.

It's all about balance and the Alien saga will remain unbalanced for a long time. I mean, I still love it to death and will always be there for releases and what not, but yeah.

Tracks from the Alien franchise? I'll go by film for this exercise!

ALIEN: Goldsmith's unaltered Main Title, The Recovery, and The Alien Planet.

ALIENS: James Horner's Main Title,

ALIEN RESURRECTION: John Frizzel's Ripley's Theme

PROMETHEUS: Harry Gregson-William's Life and We were Right. Marc Streitenfeld's BirthNot Human, and Hammerpede.

ALIEN COVENANT: Jed Kurzel's The CovenantA Cabin on The LakeSailsSpores/The Medbay, and Chestburster

Chesburster from Covenant is my absolute favorite. Life is a really close second (I'll never forget that first shot and piece of music from Prometheus when I was in the theater!), and I also love Goldsmith's unaltered Main TitleChesburster is just sooo beautiful and I LOVE that whole chestbursting scene, especially David greeting his creation. Aw yeah.

I Moon Girl, wikipedia says it was indeed Gregson-Williams who composed Life. I wonder what Streitenfeld had in mind/made for those tracks.

Bigdave, I wish AC was split into options 1 and 2 and had a run time of 3.5 hours LOTR styles but alas that will never happen.

Bigdave,  I think soul should be explored more as David did seem to react in Prometheus when Weiland was saying David had no soul...

Bigdave, that's a good point regarding Shaw's faith. I can't believe that was built up as a theme and Ridley never went further with it in AC he could have gotten real deep and had some scene wherein David says "where is your god now" as he begins his experiments and brings creation from Shaw's womb....

Spaced-Out totally agreed it should have ended as a trilogy! Resurrection is an oddity. It is so far removed from the timeline (200 years after A3!) to me it is more of a fun spin-off than part of Ripley's story...Though I do like BigDave's tie-in with Covenant and Resurrection involving the AI and Auton story-arc!!!

The AVP's did nothing for either franchise sadly. I think the aim was to get a new generation on-board instead of all us old fart 80/90s kids, but all it did was cook the Xenomorph and Yautja.

Prometheus, love it or hate, was a step in a bold new direction but has sadly been brought down by corporate second-guessing and archaic consumer forecasting.

Here's hoping Ridley Scott can bring it home with an amazing third film and blow us all away with a stunning and unexpected conclusion

@IRaptus

Personally i love Alien 3 for what it is and rate  Fincher highly too, i think they should have ended it there with a trilogy, everything after excluding Prometheus and AC, ie. AR, AVP, AVPR, in my opinion is what has cooked the beast and is why the new films aren't doing aswell as they could have, they took away the horror and allure of the alien, and thats probably what RS thought, which is why he tried to go in a different direction with Prometheus, its a shame he didn't stick to his guns and follow on that story but he didnt and we got AC, so we are where we are.

@BigDave

We can only hope that they have a story nailed down but after AC it seems that they are making it up as they go along now.

After Reading some of the great ideas that people are coming up with on here and how well they keep the timeline continuity, it amazes me that we get these films with so many plot holes and unanswered questions, i think they're hiring the wrong people lol

BigDave Good point about subtitles. I listened to the songs you linked (Wednesbury Song had a Johnny Cash vibe to me), and the Doreen Tipton video (There comes a time when the little foul like me have to stand up, and that is why I am sitting here today- brilliant!). I understood the accents fine but I also watch a lot of British stuff too.

but with my ye olde Black Country Accent, you would never understand me. That is why I suggested subtitles.

I think the Podcast does kind of be harsh to RS, without really taking note that FOX actually had a larger say in what we ended up with, and it appears the Podcast geared more to a Aliens kind of Remake.. sort of flick, apart from Hicks he did seem to had been interested in where RS was taking this, prior to pressure from FOX no doubt.

I think when we look at RS comments its easy to see what he was on about, first he did talk about the Beast Being cooked, then he talked about how the Franchise has to be about HIM (the beast) and it can evolve HIM in different ways,  he also said that he felt the Beast (Xenomorph) could go a few more rounds.

But then after AC we have him bringing up the beast is cooked, he was right and ahead of the game, and when you add this to his comments even during the Marketing for AC, when he said "they want Aliens, i'll give them $"%£$^ Aliens"

I think RS felt the Xenomorph was only a small part of the overall wider Universe, it essentially is a By-Product of the Bio-Weapon Black Goo, and i think RS felt you never had to Spoon Feed how the Xemorph is connected or how it came about and when.... He felt the Franchise had other things to cover.

We saw the Xenomorph over and over....  yes the Prequels was to answer the Questions, but FOX felt actually lets tone down these and not give much away.  Thus we got Prometheus.  While it was never Spoon Fed, it tried to keep Mystery we could clearly.. well ish lol

*The Xenomorph was a Engineered Bio-Weapon or a Outcome of the Bio-Weapon (Black Goo)

*The Xenomorphs creation is connected to the Black Goo and LV-223

*There is a missing link between the Black Goo, Xenomorph and Deacon but they wanted to keep the Xenomorph Origins a bit of Mystery.

And so RS had other Big Plans, but having to Shoe-horn the Franchise to Alien and Bring back the Xenomorph and how it was created and by who, with the limited Run Time, meant a lot of Sacrifices had to be made, and elements that would have been explored in Prometheus 2 had to be brushed under the carpet, but covered in small detail as a After-Math (Engineers and Dr Shaw).

So they have put themselves in a corner with where the Plot can Progress now, especially regarding how Davids TWO Face Huggers will leads to THOUSANDS of Eggs on the Derelict.  I just think its harder now to try and delve a bit too much into the Engineers again with  the set up....

Going to be Davids Agenda and the Companies that will take the Forefront.

A lot of Back Lash has gone to RS, and so we have to wonder will FOX replace him, or at least Curb some of his ideas and CHANGE things to please the Fans, but surely we cant have more U-Turns thrown at us again.

Indeed and the Sad thing is if FOX had not maybe got RS to change direction and go for a more Prequel to Alien and introduce the Xenomorph, it would appear the movie and sequel would have touched more on those Paradise Lost and Frankenstein, what we mainly got was a aftermath of them.

I disagree, I loved Alien Covenant. I loved it's references to Milton's Paradise Lost and Frankenstein, very Gothic.  Ridley did a great job. Last thing we need is another "Shoot 'em up, shop 'em out" Alien movie..

BigDave Do you know/think if Blomkamp's script was based off, or inspired by Gibson's script??

From what ive seen of his concept art and basic premise there seem to be a few parallel's with the two. Most notably Hicks, Newt, and Ripley being alive and well. But the viral-form xenomorph infection seems present in both too.

I cant remember a Juggernaut ship being in Gibsons story but The Sulaco was dry-docked and being repaired similar to the concept art shared by Blomkamp. It was the source of the Xeno infection on Anchorage.

Blomkamp has a reoccurring theme in most of his films with oppressive governments and immoral weapon research companies. That would go hand-in-hand with W-Y motives in the Gibson script also..

BigDaveAlien: Covenant ForumAI Goo

The Goo has indeed evolved over the course of its time, from what it was implied as in Jon Spaights work, which is a Pathogen/Substance that allows for Genetic Splicing/Hybridizing and seeding of DNA

The AI element to it could be interesting as it means it can be programed to alter how it effects subjects.. i think this was brought in to allow for and explain why the Black Goo reacted differently in Alien Covenant

A interesting read, does show the problems that arise from too many cooks in the kitchen, the last part of the article does seem to me, that the author was very interested and hopeful that Blomkamps Alien 5 would be made.

It would appear a similar problem that Alien 3 was having is what happened as far as plans for a Prometheus sequel....   Hopefully FOX/RS have a story nailed down, but i think the less than luke warm reception that Alien Covenant had got could put a sequel in a bit of hibernation.
