BigDave, I would fully support (and encourage) a BigDave Podcast segment on The Network lol :)
Better you even with ye olde accent...then say an Aussie like myself rambling on....

I fully support this.
Indeed, thats Hit the Nail on the head....
The point i was trying to raise, in that its how you portray and use the MONSTER/MONSTERS some of those Franchises did Cook their respective Monsters, in a Cash Cow Grab on exploiting the over done Franchise. The Alien Universe to a degree did this with AR and with the AVP movies.
The damage could be undone if done right, but AC did not use the Xenomorph well enough, IF David is still to be the Creator of the Xenomorph, then David's Creations must Evolve a bit and end up in their THOUSANDS on a Engineer Ship, that happens to end up No Where Near Origae-6 and so the Xenomorph has to be covered, its a case of how many movies will Span Until we get to the Derelict?
Then they need to be careful HOW, WHEN and WHY they exploit the Xenomorph, as over cooking it could do it more damage, if its done right it can Salvage back its reputation.
Listening to 45 minutes, i think AVPGalaxy Hicks had some good points, it appears the other TWO guys would rather had gone and seen a Blomkamps bring back Xeno Queens and Ripley kind of flick.
Continuing with my first point in this post... its a case of doing something different, which Prometheus had attempted and AC basically thrown all that under the Carpet. Its hard to do something fresh with a Franchise Monsters, when they have appeared in 5 or more movies.
Which is why RS was right with the beast was cooked, there is only so much Eggs, Face Huggers, Xenomorphs and Queens you can do, and returning to ONE/TWO Monsters could work for the Alien Franchise, its just they was not handled well in AC.
When Franchises run out of steam, they attempt to sometimes Reboot it, but this sometimes does not go down to well, look at the Remake of Nightmare on Elm Street, which gave Freddy a more sinister back story, it was trying something a bit different, but still it did not go down to well and now they are planning a remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street parts 3 on wards? or 4 on wards? All this is doing is the same as Blomkamps Alien 5 was doing.
The 2010 A Nightmare on Elm Street was trying something different, but alas it will never get a sequel, but then i it did all it could do is make a more darker version of the Old Franchise, much like the NEW IT movie attempted.
Maybe a Prequel to Nightmare on Elm Street would be something more Fresh, to cover what made Frederick Charles "Freddy" Krueger become who he became... be it they Prequel the 2010 Movie or 1984 one.
Another point to consider, is when a Franchise Monster gets over exploited then you had to try something different, and a ALIEN Franchise about Xenomorphs and Queens, and more Xenos and Queens would grow tiresome.
You only have to look at the WALKING DEAD to see how to use a Franchise, Characters are done great but this is what you have when you have TV Series and not restricted to a 90-120 minute movie. But what Walking Dead did so well was give us Plots that made the ZOMBIE Franchise actually not center around the Zombies at all.. it was for the first few seasons, then they knew continuing about the Humans vs Zombies would soon get OVERCOOKED
So its Plots like the Saviors that helped to make the Franchise more interesting than the Zombie done to death Trope...
I think this is what RS is trying to bring to the Alien Franchise, i dont think he wants to take out the Xenomorph, but he wants to explore other themes where the Xenomorph plays a distant role.
This is where RS and the 3-4 incoming Parties comes in
Likely means we have
1) The Colony that gets set up...
2) Incoming Weyland-Yutani Ship (as they know what Davids has done)
3) David and his Creations
4) The Engineers
Sounds cool hope everything goes well with it and you guys get to start it up.
well Critters5 lets hope we get some answers regarding what Planet 4 was in the next few movies, its open to debate what role everything there plays. I have a few theories on the subject.... But they could end up taking this Topic in a different direction, well maybe.
It could be just those Engineers chose to revert back to more Ancient ways due to the Hubris of Sub-creating and maybe trying to Perfect their Species. But there are so many clues that does not quite fit, and so leads me to think these beings are just a Genetic Stock that are used for Sacrifices.
So a Big Problem is where do they take this?
The route they chosen has limited things... Prometheus was like a central movie... on one hand it was to show the Space Jockey are the Engineers and the LV-223 outpost they experimented on and created the Black Goo which is related to the Xenomorph. Prometheus left it open to go one of THREE ways.
1) Explore the Deacon and hope another Mission to LV-223 can reveal more about this place and how the Deacon connects to ALIEN
2) Go off to the Engineers Home World to explore their Agenda and History, are the Engineers at the top of the Hierarchy etc?
3) A movie set in Ancient Times to give the answers to either or both of those. Cover the LV-223 Outbreak or Space Jockey Event.
It appeared we was set for OPTION 2 but they had a U-Turn and now we have a movie set of prequels that will literally connect directly to ALIEN thus alternating the Time Line that was intended for a long time. They way AC handled the Engineers, Davids creation of the Xenomorph and how he is now on a 7.5 year journey to Origae-6 does leave a limited direction the prequels will go.
Totally agree Characters do help, and indeed it appears Characters that just seem to be there to drive along plot points has been Prometheus and more so Alien Covenants undoing.
Dr Shaw was a Character they could have expanded on, you have a religious person who finds out her Faith is flawed, and the Gods they went to find are just advanced Humanoids who have a far worse Agenda and View on Mankind then she ever could have hoped... but she still holds on to her faith... CLAIMING God would never try and hurt her and suggesting that so what if Holloway was right.... WHO created the Engineers then? So she was still holding on to the chance that their is a GOD so she can somehow salvage her FAITH
Some fans was not interested in pursuing this, or finding out more about the Engineers and so hence the way they was both killed off. HOWEVER.... if Dr Shaw found out the Agenda and Truth and it proved that the God she was brought up to believe in is totally further from the TRUTH then Dr Shaw has NOTHING.. this means she could be become a very Broken Character, and potentially Go Mad, be Angry it left a lot to explore how such things would totally change her as a Character... But alas...
So she was killed off, and now i think the set up for the next movie does not bold well for Daniels at all, i was offering a few potential ideas of how Daniels can play a role in the next movie, by having a deal reached between her and David.
Otherwise if we look at it from DAVIDS POV which is what we had to do with AC and the reasons he did what he did, then a Daniels would certainly hamper any plans of Davids and so Logically he would subject her to Experiments and Kill her off.... thats what makes sense because of how they ended ALIEN Covenant..
If Daniels was not aware Walter was David, then her Character could have gone on to develop, and then in future she finds out that David is Walter and reveal the shock and horror on her Face, but doing it in AC means they have written themselves into a corner with how she is to be used.
The themes of SOUL is something RS is touching upon, we need to not look at it being a case that WE DO, but as a Question of Do We? Everyone has their own opinions and Faith and what not when it comes down to Mankind, we could be no more than Biological Machines, Flesh and Blood and its our Memories, Emotions and Moral Compass that makes us what we are, these are all influenced by our experiences through life.
So when we die... we leave nothing...
This is something RS was trying to get to IMO, it was to raise things like is there or is there not a Soul... and can Robots have a Soul if indeed our Soul is just Memories, Experiences and Emotions. Which we could see to a good degree with CALL from Alien Resurrection.
Another thing RS was touching on is about Legacy..... if we have NO SOUL and when we Die thats it, then we only Live on in our Family/Next of kin (our Creations) other ways we live on is being remembered for our Deeds, and so you have Famous Leaders/Rulers like Past Kings and Queens, people who are remembered for their works be it ART, MUSIC, LITERATURE some Political and Heroic People will have a Legacy, some Dictators/Tyrants also be remembered for their Brutality. All of these things are a LEGACY.
This in Part is shown in the Prologue, Peter Weyland is leaving a Legacy, when he is gone he would be remembered for his Legacy, and also the creation of David is his greatest Legacy. Its why the Ozymandias Poem is in the movie, its to show that when Kings come and go, their Legacy is whats left behind, and great Monuments and Statues can be built to remember them by..... but eventually this disappears to dust, and then there is NOTHING... Which indeed is very true.. if we look back at Ancient Mankind around 1000 + years ago and some Disaster killed off all of Mankind... while the Buildings and Statues are left to remind anyone of who WE was.... many thousands of years time so say Half a Million years, there would be little or nothing left, Great Monuments like the Pyramids would look totally different in hundreds of thousands of years.
And so we see these things are setting up Davids thinking, and why he wishes to leave his own LEGACY
BigDave The fact that a replica of the xenomorph was in Disneyworld does not make it less scary to me and to the vast majority. RS decreed that, because that is what he "wishes to believe". And the reason why Jason, Freddy and Michael Myers are not scary is because their latest movies were bad or comedic. But if you re-watch the older movies (and that includes Alien), you can feel scared all over again. I have watched a compilation of scary scenes from "Alien Isolation" and even with the limitations of a video game, it is much creepier and scarier than AC. In Covenant there is simply no love for the genre. My theory is that Ridley Scott just grew out of the sci-fi/horror genre like someone who grows out of videogames.
cuponator3000 have you guys done an Alien Covenant / Alien Awakening feature??
I could do you all a Podcast..... but with my ye olde Black Country Accent, you would never understand me lol and dont know what you would all want, and i dare not show my Face....
"I cud du yow all a Podcast, but with my ye owld Black Countray Acksent, yow wud neva understond us lol, and i dow now, what yow wud all want, and i darecent show my Fairce"
But on a serious note, yes a Pod Cast would be Great
Thank you so much, iRaptus! Very polished. I love it! Thank you! Now we just need this Scified one up and running one day (soon hopefully)!
You can read Gibson's Alien 3 script here.
You can also read Vincent Ward's alternative involving the wooden planet and monks here.
Personally, I think what we got with Fincher's direction was, and is still, the best Alien 3. It makes a perfectly grand conclusion to "Ripley's Trilogy". Due to its troubled production it is not a perfect (especially the CGI!), but I think it adds a lot to the Alienverse. It has a grand setting, great characters and cast, some very deep concepts and themes (think Dillon's speech's). Plus the Runner/ Dog-Alien is the best looking xeno imo.
Its criticised dark and nihilistic themes just show how far down the rabbit-hole the star beast has taken Ripley, culminating in her self-sacrifice to finally end the cycle and thwart W-Y.
The end of the video made a lot of sense from Ridley's point of view of beginning the prequel with the Engineer sacrificing to create life and the ending of the prequels with an android sacrificing himself to create life.
cuponator3000 nice podcast dude!! Very polished. I subscribed :)
I've wondered about that for awhile, so have others on this forum. Here's one thread I could find from 2012: black goo and david
I like the pictures but as a movie idea it really sucks. My guess is that it would almost feel like AvP if they would make a movie out of it.
By the way if you would cut off the arm of a Xeno with a light-saber would the acid burn through the armor?
Sure, it seems like an interesting idea.
Big Dave: Sorry but I disagree with you, I don't like the route that they are taking. We already have two failed prequels so I can not understand how anyone can think that the route that they take is interesting. I am just scratching my head at that like "huh?" but that is not to say that I find those that like the direction to be dumb or so. Prometheus is better than Covenant IMO because David is better and he has less of a role although he is important, but that is just my opinion though.
Don't take this like I am against new ideas, I think that the Engineers could have been alright if they are done well and if they make sense and I also like they they are trying new monsters and new environments. I don't like how they are trying to make David the creator of the Xeno and I don't think that they have made a lot of well-done human characters. There are parts where I agree with them and there are parts where I agree with you.
Yes, David was lot better written in Prometheus but they sort of ruined his character in AC. I like that he was sort of gray in Prometheus. To me the character is almost dead, I hope that they will at least reduce his screen time in the next movie and spend more time on better human characters otherwise they haven't learned their lesson about making better human characters. Hopefully he will be better written in the next movie. Don't make the same mistake again.
I like they idea of a space colony to start a new life like Daniels said it was just too bad that they messed up the characters. They don't have to be scientists or marines or what ever they have had before in the franchise. Just write well done characters that feel natural (have more than two or three character traits) and that we can relate to, I don't think that is too much to ask for. You mention the marines, I think that a reason why I think that Alien and Alien 3 are better than Aliens is because those in prison and those at the Nostromo were civilians and not trained persons, therefore the odds were bigger. Alright now I think that I know a bit better why I think that the first one and Alien 3 are the best this far, I have never put it down on paper like that.
My guess from seeing the end of AC is that it will be difficult to keep Daniels and Tennessee alive. If David is not totally stupid or get a huge case of hubris then I don't see how they will survive but we have seen bad writing before.
"so David then suggests that on Origae-6 he is prepared to allow Mankind to get a New Start, he could go on about how he was treated by Mankind, apart from Dr Shaw."
I doubt that Daniels and Tennessee would trust him enough to keep him alive, I wouldn't. Since he is not a human I wouldn't hesitate for a second to blow his head off after all that he has done, but that is how I would have solved it. You wrote unless they make a covenant but I don't see that as likely.
"If we are kind", I don't think that David understands what that means in practice since he can not feel emotions he might understand them though but this is something that we have discussed before I think at least. To me that means that David says (implied) "if you do as I want it will be a kind world (I won't kill you) ".
Yes I agree with what you say about killing two main characters, that would be strange. I would be very annoyed if they do the same mistake for the third time in a row about the characters being some background material to push the David story, that would make me upset. Having humans as pieces to drive the story forward is just so lame because then you don't care to give them any depth, which honestly sucks.
Sure artificial intelligence and tales of creation could be interesting but they got to have interesting characters for the story to work otherwise I do not care what the topic is, it gets boring. Yes David's psyche could be interesting but it will not work if they don't get the humans right.
Tales of creation could be done in an interesting way but you got to get the characters right, at least some of them. If he would only care as much for the human characters as he does for the themes and David.
"The Fact David when he dies/becomes dis-activated will never have a Spiritual Soul that goes to a Higher Place... a Higher Pane of Existence... David would simply become NOTHING".
Well humans have a psyche and are made of different material than synthetics. To me that is obvious, even though we can make robots that could be as close to humans as possible they will never become human. I understand that David wants to create, that was obvious in AC.
I think that humans have a soul/psyche although that is not to say that there is an afterlife which maybe it is.
"Going back to THE SOUL... if Humans have none, and when we Die that is it... but David can upload his AI into systems then it is DAVID who Ultimately has a ever lasting SOUL that Transcends to a Higher Pane of Existence."
I see what you mean but I disagree, a soul requires a higher mental function which is tied to humans and not synthetics so he can be a machine that can upgrade like you do with computer software but that is not the same as a soul/psyche because if that would be the case then a robot in a factory could have potential soul also. Maybe I did not make myself clear on this one but I hope that it is not too bad.
"Its these kinds of Themes RS i think is attempting to explore, and not merely Humans Create a Robot who goes a bit Mad and then wants to kill all Humans."
Alright but he hasn't done so very well this far.
Great video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9iIoz8MYYc
First, I just can't see that actor as much as I love him in comedy's in a serious role. Second, like you said there was just no character development other than he wears a cowboy hat.
But the guy in the video had a great point, without a social structure in place the Xeno's would regress and act like animals just as humans do if raised in the wild, running on all fours.
Critters5: I didn't hate Tennesee I just think that he wasn't very well-written as far as character traits are concerned. Tennesee was just one of many characters that should have been written a lot better.
Sorry but I don't like it. It gives too much intelligence to the Xenos and it seems like a movie like that would be like AVP in quality. The monsters should not just be bugs that you can kill easily but they should not be extremely intelligent either, there got to be some balance. Perhaps it could be kept like fan-fiction of some sort but not as a movie.
Big Dave:
I have never been one of those that have found the issue of scale of the SJ to be a problem but I understand if other fans take offense to that. Maybe it was a part of a civilization like the Mayans were they had their warriors and what ever but that they varied in size for example just as people vary in skin tone, how their hair looks and what ever. Unfortunately they were never made too well in Alien Covenant but maybe they can sort of save this in the next movie if the damage isn't irreparable that is but hopefully it isn't.
Both the creation by David and the issue of how old it is that is just something that I find to be boring if they will stay that way. I bet that you can find fan-fiction that is better than that. A good thing is that they can still save parts of the mess that they have made but it won't be saved by Scott since he gave us this AI angle so he seems to be a problem to be honest.
Exactly right about the sacrificial scene, I can see that some people could have a problem with that. I think that maybe there were parts of the Engineers that were used for sacrifices of what we saw in Prometheus, that could save that part. A scene like that could be used to explain it. If I was a writer that is how I would explain it if I would be in the position to save what is left of the prequels so it won't end up in a total wreck, a situation of sink or float indeed.
If the Xeno that David makes is the one that leads to all the eggs on the Derelict then that is messed up. I do not want it like that since I am disappointed by the David story because of how they changed him in AC although I don't put the blame of Fassbender.
A hierarchy like the priests in the Mayan society but for the Engineers would be cool. I think that there was a cut scene like that in Prometheus, it would have made a lot of sense. *Sigh* They cut that scene out, that was a bad decision.
Yes I would like to see a part of up the hierarchy trying to re/create what David did and turn it on him because ten at least the Engineers will be given a more important part in the creation of the Xeno. I hope that they will be given a bigger part in the Xeno story. Hopefully Scott won't be there to destroy it.
Ridley should not have any input on the story since he has shown us that when he has input on it we get bad results (Prometheus and AC).
The hierarchy above the Engineers and their role in the Xeno-creation could be interesting. I wonder how that would look like in the movie and how much time that would be spent on it. Hopefully they could use that to reduce the time of David and get a better monster than he did.
One thing that I would like is if the Engineers or some of the Engineer family tree kills David. First they ripped his head of but Shaw put him back together so he used that to wreck havoc. Because he did chaos the Engineers find out about that and finally kill him. I would appreciate if that is the way that it goes. Good riddance David.
I still don't understand was Paradise the Engineer home world, a planet seeded by the Engineers with another humanoid race or another Engineer planet where Engineers (who look nothing like Engineers) live? Such piss poor writing.
I agree with Bigdave. I think Ridley should finish off his next film(s) and then start a new trilogy with fresh blood.
I agree with them.
They can use the Xeno but don't overexpose it, leave it in the background. When we saw the alien in daylight it felt like "meh".
He might have good visuals but he can't write a story it seems to me. This is just how I look at it.
They should have expanded the story with the Engineers instead of the artificial intelligence but they bombed the Engineers out of the picture in AC. Killing the Engineers was very disappointing especially when the human characters are not thought out so we get a boring robot movie.
What really bothers me is that he sacrifices the Xenos, the Engineers, and the humans to focus on AI. AI is the thing that I find the least interesting of it all, it is just bad. Keep that sh-- to another movie.
I probably won't bother to watch AC again, just like Ali81 said. It just becomes a movie about a mad robot going berserk which is a failure. Sure you can describe it to be about sub-creation but keep that to another franchise. Trying that within the frames of the Alien franchise and you get a disappointing movie if you don't really try to get good characters which they didn't manage to do.
An alien movie isn't just a movie with a dangerous monster killing people. They said something like that and I agree, you got to make it in a way that seems natural and that you can see their fear and sympathize with the person that is about to be killed. This is because they have messed up the characters.
28 Days Later is a movie that I really like, how about having that guy directing an alien movie? The director to that movie is named Danny Boyle and the writer is Alex Garland.
Fincher directed Alien 3 and the movie Zodiac. Zodiac was alright but the characters could have been more interesting but they fit for a movie like that but maybe not for an alien movie. The atmosphere/feeling about the Zodiac fit with the kind of movie that they were trying to make it seems to me.
"Maybe it would be about characters dealing with it since we know what the Alien is about."
Absolutely yes, that has been lacking since AR and they still haven't gotten it right.
"(Scott and company seem to focus on plot over characters and have a lot of big themes and questions to cover. No room for emotion)" - Cuponator3000
You seem to be correct on that, I don't care for the plot or themes if I can't get interested in the characters. The movie won't work for me if there is no one to support but I am not sure if Scott understands this.
At 1:50 we get a sound like the Neomorphs too ;)
I think Sadly thats going to be hard to do with the direction they taken with AC.
Prometheus set up to show us the Engineers are behind the Space Jockey, and LV-223 was a place they was testing some Bio-Weapon that was linked to the Xenomorph, it was just not as clear to some. But then a lot of the clues for me came from maybe those Easter Eggs...
So Prometheus did enough to show us that the Space Jockey was the Engineer Race, and introduce a whole Story about them playing a part in our creation, and then they decided we was a failed creation and had conducted tests/experiments to create something Horrific to use upon us but this back fired.
Engineers Agenda/Home-world <==== Prometheus ====> Engineers Bio-Weapon relates to ALIEN
Above is the TWO kinds of Routes they could have taken, it appeared they was gearing for the Engineers Agenda route, before a U-Turn and now we are on a path to have to directly link to ALIEN where the Time-Line would be altered in order to literally shoe-horn in the Space Jockey event.
The only other way around this would have been Time-Travel as i dont think FOX would have considered a event showing us the Engineers and what lead to the Space Jockey as far as prolonged Flash Backs
"1- Ridley Scott cannot decree the xenomorph is dead and lacks the imagination to push the story forward."
I have to back RS on this one, RS is right we have over the years had Xenomorphs on screen, in games etc and ok the Disney Ride, also.. The Fact is the Xenomorph itself is no longer Scary, neither is Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger not as far as when you look them, its only the way you utilize them that makes them Scary. Alien Isolation works because you are put in the Boots of a Character who is related to Ripley and there is a story build up here.... You are faced with ONE Xenomorph, and you are powerless against it, like the Nostromo Crew was and like the Fiorina "Fury" 161 Prisoners too.
If you took Alien Isolation, upgraded Amanda to a Marine, give her Weapons she can kill the Xenomorph with, have her come up against Muiltple Xenomorphs and that Game would simply not be as Scary as it was, its the Peril that Amanda Faces that makes it Scary. And so the Xenomorph has to be handled the same way, if we bring the Xenomorph back in great numbers, and the Queen and have them killed off by Humans then indeed the Beast would be cooked again... The Xenomorph has some life left in it.... but you have to be careful to not over expose the Xenomorph.... ALIEN Worked because you hardly ever saw the Beast.
I am 25 minutes in, and it appears these guys well the American really is against RS, saying he ran out of ideas, and the way the Xenomorph been used or lack of by RS is what they are blaming for the failings.
Yet they mentioned Blomkamp had great ideas to bring something NEW...? Really? All he would have done is simply Re-Introduce the Xenomorph via a Queen, it would have been more like a remake of Alien Resurrection... Blomkamp had some good ideas, because it appeared he would have also shown us a different version of the Xenomorph, but Prometheus and Alien Covenant also did this with the Neomorph and Deacon.... And also Blomkamp had a neat idea about Engineer Technology and Merging it with Ripley.... this is something New.. But the most part Blomkamp would just gave us numerous Xenomorphs vs Ripley again.
It could be coincidence or indeed it could be weather that is manipulated by Engineer Technology.
The Gold Device on the top of the Cathedral is interesting, we have to ponder what purpose could this be for?
As far as the Weather Manipulation, i had a source who passed on this from early 2015 many months before any information on AC came about, we this source did say those above the Engineers have Technology they use to Manipulate/Terra-form Worlds and they have used this Technology in the past not only to shape worlds but also to wipe the slate clean and so the Ice Age, the Deluge (Great Flood) are not natural phenomenon but manipulated events by use of the Hierarchies Technology.
And as far as Planet 4, if they have Technology that causes Storms that interfere with radio/sensors then to a degree it could act like a cloaking device of sorts.
Ha ha thats AVPGalaxy for you..... give them a sequel where David is not the creator of the Xenomorph, add Queens and lots Xenos, throw Ripley in and some Predators and happy days for them folk
Very interesting work, and thanks for the Share...
Maybe we best not put ideas into Disneys head, in case they do decide to buy 20th Century lol
@ Critters5,
Sadly no, but someone at Fox must because of Ridleys statement about Alien: Covenant being produced over Paradise because of the polarizing opinions towards Prometheus.
It is a nice track. I don't notice much during the movie since it enhances the scenes. I appreciate in general that it shows how bland a movie could be without a good soundtrack.
Odd entry here. In general, I think the best soundtracks are the ones that I don't notice much if that makes sense. Soundtracks enhance a movie- they ebb and flow according to the scenes. If I notice the music too much, it distracts my attention from the movie. If I am listening to the soundtrack, then I am not paying as much attention to what is happening on screen. It may sound odd, but if I don't notice the soundtrack very much and enjoy the movie, then the soundtrack has done its job.
IRaptus That Xeno Trooper looks great!
I love the pic of Storm Troopers getting owned.
dk i did a quick google check and found some bizarre stuff... such as a Xenotrooper and Storm Trooper Covenant poster parady...

Trevor Storey

Robert Shane
Really nice pictures! Is there one of a face hugged Storm Trooper somewhere? It would be interesting to see a chest burster put that body armor to the test.
